Islands · Society Islands
The Society Islands are French Polynesia's high islands: a volcanic mountain in the middle, a barrier reef offshore and a lagoon in between. They split into two groups, the Windward Islands around Tahiti and the Leeward Islands to the north-west, and together they hold 245,987 of the country's 278,786 people, about 88%1. Almost every visitor sleeps here at least once, because every international flight lands on Tahiti2.
01 · The short answer
Two groups,
one way in.
Windward Islands (Îles du Vent): Tahiti and Moorea, plus three islands most visitors never see — the atoll of Tetiaroa, Maiao and the uninhabited volcano Mehetia3. Leeward Islands (Îles Sous-le-Vent, or Raromatai in Tahitian4): Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Maupiti, plus the atoll of Tupai and three remote atolls far to the west3.
Seven of these islands have scheduled transport and places to stay: Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Maupiti. Air Tahiti serves all seven, Taha'a through Raiatea's airport4. Moorea also has ferries from Papeete all day, and the five Leeward islands share one fast ferry, the Apetahi Express, three days a week5.
The real choice is less about which group than about how many flights you want. Tahiti and Moorea work as one unit linked by boat. The Leewards are a 40- to 55-minute flight from Tahiti67 or most of a day on the ferry, and close to each other once you are there: Huahine is 20 to 35 minutes by air from Bora Bora, Raiatea or Moorea8.

03 · The Windward Islands
Tahiti, Moorea
and three you won't visit.
Tahiti is the capital island and the gateway: the airport, the port, Papeete's market and 191,779 people, more than two-thirds of the country1. Its lagoon is narrow and most beaches are black sand, which is why most visitors give it a night or two at each end of the trip rather than a week. Moorea sits 17 km away20 — close enough that Aremiti alone runs nine sailings from Papeete on weekdays, 05:15 to 17:30, cars included, at 2,350 XPF (approximately US$23) one way for a visitor (fares from 19 July 2026)16.
Tetiaroa is an atoll of 13 motu that Marlon Brando bought a few years after filming Mutiny on the Bounty in 196021. Today it is The Brando: 35 villas and a residence on Motu Onetahi, a 20-minute private flight from Tahiti22. Tahiti Tourisme also lists catamaran day trips, private charters and helicopter flights; the other motu are kept for wildlife observation and research21.
Maiao, with 343 residents in 2022, belongs to the Moorea-Maiao commune9 and encloses two hypersaline lakes23. Air Tahiti doesn't fly there4 and Tahiti Tourisme doesn't list it among its islands24: treat it as a place where people live, not one you can book. Mehetia, about 110 km east of Tahiti's Taiarapu peninsula, is an uninhabited young volcano25 that marks the present position of the hotspot that built the whole chain3.
04 · The Leeward Islands
Five islands
on one ferry line.
Huahine is the first stop out of Papeete: two islands, Nui and Iti, inside one reef, with restored marae at Maeva and only two operating hotels — the rest is family pensions28. Raiatea and Taha'a share one lagoon4. Raiatea has Uturoa, the administrative town of the Leewards, the yacht-charter bases and Taputapuātea29; Taha'a has no airport, vanilla farms and the motu hotels that look across to Bora Bora.
Bora Bora is the reason many people come: Mount Otemanu, 727 m, in the middle of a wide lagoon30, a ring of motu with the overwater resorts, and 30.5% of all the international-hotel room-nights sold in the country18. Maupiti, at the end of the ferry line, is the same shape at a smaller scale, with family pensions, no bank and no ATM31. Every boat enters through one narrow southern pass, which a big south swell can close32.
Tupai, a heart-shaped atoll about 19 km north of Bora Bora, is uninhabited; a visit needs special permission and there is nowhere to stay33. Far to the west, Maupihaa (Mopelia), Manuae (Scilly) and Motu One (Bellingshausen) have a few dozen residents between them at most3 and no scheduled flights4. Maupihaa is where the German raider Seeadler ran aground in 191734. They are destinations for yachts, not for trip planning.
05 · The island guides
Seven islands
you can book.

Tahiti
The capital island and the only international airport: Papeete's market and food trucks, the museum, the interior valleys, Teahupo'o. Our guide suggests two or three nights, split around the trip.

Moorea
Ferries from Papeete all day, rays and blacktip sharks off the north-west motu, the Belvedere and the Opunohu marae, humpback whales outside the reef in season. Three to five nights.

Bora Bora
Otemanu over the widest lagoon in the group, the overwater resorts on the motu, Matira beach and the WWII guns on the ridges. Three to four nights, ideally at the end.

Huahine
Two islands in one reef, the Maeva marae beside Lake Fauna Nui, blue-eyed eels at Faie, surf in the reef passes, and pensions rather than resorts. Three to five nights.

Raiatea
Taputapuātea, the Faaroa river, the Temehani plateau and the charter bases. The hinge of a Leeward loop, a short hop from Huahine and Bora Bora. Three to four nights.

Taha'a
Vanilla plantations, small pearl farms and the coral-garden drift snorkel; no airport, so you arrive by boat from Raiatea. Two to four nights.

Maupiti
Family pensions only, the wade to Motu Auira, reef mantas at a shallow cleaning station, a short steep summit climb. Three to five nights, with a spare for the pass.
06 · Getting between them
Planes, one fast ferry
and the Moorea boats.
- 01
Land on Tahiti
Every international flight lands at Faa'a2. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way11, so most people sleep on Tahiti before moving on. See Faa'a airport.
- 02
Air Tahiti
The backbone. Its turboprops serve all seven islands, with direct links between them: from Bora Bora alone it flies direct to Huahine, Raiatea, Maupiti, Moorea and Tahiti, and out to Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava in the Tuamotu. The airline points travellers to its multi-island passes for cheaper fares4. See Air Tahiti and its passes.
- 03
Air Moana
The competitor on the busy routes. Its destination list covers Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Huahine in the Society Islands, plus Rangiroa, Tikehau, Fakarava, Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa35. Compare both before buying single tickets.
- 04
The Apetahi Express
Out of Papeete at 06:30 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays: Huahine 09:40, Raiatea 11:00, Taha'a 12:05, Bora Bora 13:20, Maupiti 14:55. Back on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, into Papeete at 15:00, plus a Wednesday shuttle between the Leewards only (timetable from 15 June 2026)5. Every leg costs 8,000 XPF (approximately US$78) in school term and 9,000 XPF (approximately US$88) in the holidays, two 23 kg bags included, non-refundable (2026 fares)36.
- 05
The Moorea ferries
Aremiti, Tauati Ferry and Vaeara'i sail from the Papeete terminal to Vaiare, cars included. One-way passenger fares run from 1,100 XPF (approximately US$11) on Tauati to 2,350 XPF (approximately US$23) for a visitor on Aremiti in 20262616. Ignore any guide that still lists Terevau17. See ferries.
- 06
Raiatea to Taha'a
Most hotels and pensions arrange a boat from Raiatea's airport, about 30 minutes. A public shuttle also runs from the Uturoa quay to Haamene and Vaitoare: a 2026 timetable lists five weekday departures and two a day at weekends, at 800–1,000 XPF (approximately US$8–10) one way37.
- 07
By yacht
Raiatea is where most Leeward charters start. Overnight anchoring (16:00–09:00) in the marked zones is booked on escales.gov.pf, with quotas and 48-hour limits in most of them29.
07 · Windward or Leeward
Two halves,
two kinds of trip.
- Getting there
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): Fly into Tahiti; Moorea is 15 minutes by air12 or a ferry, with nine Aremiti sailings on weekdays alone16
Leeward Islands: A 40- to 55-minute flight from Tahiti67, or the Apetahi Express three days a week5 - Lagoon
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): Narrow on Tahiti, with mostly black-sand beaches; Moorea's is the one you swim in
Leeward Islands: Wider lagoons and more motu, Bora Bora's above all; Raiatea and Taha'a share one - Places to stay
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): The widest range: international hotels, mid-range hotels and pensions on both islands
Leeward Islands: Overwater resorts on Bora Bora; a few hotels and many pensions on Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a; pensions only on Maupiti - Culture
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): The Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, Papeete's market, the Arahurahu and Opunohu marae
Leeward Islands: Taputapuātea, World Heritage since 201719; the Maeva marae on Huahine - Pace
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): Traffic around Papeete; Moorea busy by day and quiet at night
Leeward Islands: Smaller villages, fewer cars, more boats; Bora Bora is the exception - Hotel nights, Jul–Sep 2025
- Windward (Tahiti, Moorea): Tahiti 36.7%, Moorea 19.3% of the country's international-hotel room-nights
Leeward Islands: Bora Bora 30.5%, the other Leewards 6.7%18
Verdict. Use the Windward Islands for arrival, departure and culture, and the Leewards for the lagoon days. A trip that does only Tahiti and Moorea misses the Leeward lagoons; one that skips Tahiti misses the museum and the market, and has no buffer before the flight home.
How we match islands to trips: by transport (direct flights, ferry days, connection risk), by what each island has that the others don't, and by the nights our island guides suggest. The pairings below are editorial, independent and unpaid.
08 · Choosing islands
Which island
for which trip.
First trip, 7–10 nights
A night on Tahiti, Moorea by ferry, then Bora Bora by air. The classic for a reason: one domestic flight, two very different lagoons. Add a last night on Tahiti before flying home.
Honeymoon
Bora Bora for the overwater room, with Moorea or a Taha'a motu hotel as a cheaper second stop.
Culture and archaeology
Raiatea for Taputapuātea, Huahine for Maeva, and a day in Papeete for the museum and the market.
Pensions and a smaller budget
Huahine and Maupiti run on family pensions, and the Apetahi Express replaces flights for the Leeward legs at 8,000–9,000 XPF (approximately US$78–88) a leg in 202636.
Families
Moorea: no domestic flight needed, a ferry you can drive onto, and calm water with rays off the north-west motu.
09 · Routes
Three ways
to loop the group.
Mostly by ferry. Tahiti to Huahine on a Tuesday, Friday or Sunday sailing, which leaves Papeete at 06:305; Huahine to Raiatea or Taha'a on a later sailing; on to Bora Bora; fly back to Tahiti. Every Leeward leg costs the same 8,000–9,000 XPF (approximately US$78–88, 2026 fares)36, so the boat is cheapest for the long legs and poor value for the short Raiatea–Taha'a hop, where the local shuttle does the job37.
By air. Tahiti, Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora and back, with Moorea at either end by ferry. Bora Bora's direct flights to Moorea, Maupiti and the Tuamotu mean you can also leave the group without going back through Papeete4.
Short and simple. Tahiti and Moorea only, by ferry: no domestic flight at all, and the cheapest version of the Society Islands.
However you route it, keep a buffer night on Tahiti before the international flight. Weather can cancel boats, and Maupiti's pass is closed in a big south swell32.
10 · When to go
Dry winter,
wet summer.
The whole group follows one pattern: a drier, slightly cooler southern winter and a hot, wet southern summer. At Faa'a, average rainfall runs from 41 mm in August to 279 mm in December, 1,579 mm a year; the mountain interiors get far more38.
Events move demand as much as weather. July is the Heiva month on Tahiti; the Hawaiki Nui Va'a canoe race runs from Huahine to Bora Bora (28–30 October in 2026) and fills the Leewards that week39. Month-by-month detail is in when to go.
11 · Questions
Questions.
- 01
Which islands are in the Society Islands?
The Windward Islands — Tahiti, Moorea, Tetiaroa, Maiao and Mehetia — and the Leeward Islands — Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora, Maupiti, Tupai, Maupihaa, Manuae and Motu One3. Seven of them have scheduled transport and places to stay.
- 02
- 03
Can I travel between the islands by ferry?
Tahiti to Moorea, yes, all day. For the Leewards, the Apetahi Express links Papeete with Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Maupiti three days a week, plus a Wednesday shuttle between the Leewards5. Everything else is by air.
- 04
What is the difference between the Windward and Leeward Islands?
Position: the Windward group lies to the south-east around Tahiti, upwind in the trade winds; the Leewards lie to the north-west. For a visitor the difference is transport — Moorea is a ferry ride from Papeete, the Leewards a flight or most of a day on the Apetahi Express.
- 05
How many islands should I visit?
Two or three in a week to ten days, three or four in two weeks. Each extra island costs a flight or a ferry day, and usually half a day of transfers.
- 06
Can I visit Tetiaroa without staying at The Brando?
Yes. Tahiti Tourisme lists catamaran day trips, private yacht charters and helicopter flights; the motu other than the hotel's are kept for wildlife observation and research21.
