Taha'a sits inside the same reef as Raiatea, a hibiscus-shaped island of about 90 km² where some 5,300 people farm, fish, and tend pearl lines. Its fame is vanilla: the island grows most of French Polynesia's crop — commonly cited at around 80% — and family plantations open their drying racks to visitors.
The lagoon does the rest. On the northwest motu, the 'coral river' between Tautau and its neighbor funnels snorkelers over dense gardens on a gentle current, and a handful of small luxury hideaways face Bora Bora on the horizon. The main villages — Patio, Haamene, Tiva — stay resolutely local.
