Bora Bora,
the iconic lagoon.
A drowned volcano, a ring of motu, and the most photographed water in the Pacific — worth researching beyond the resort brochure.
01 / Orientation
A volcano
dissolving into water.
Bora Bora is the late stage of an island's life: the volcanic core has eroded to the twin towers of Otemanu (727 m) and Pahia, while the reef that once fringed it now carries a necklace of motu around a lagoon famous for its blues. About 10,600 people live here, most around Vaitape on the main island, 260 km northwest of Tahiti — roughly 50 minutes by air.
The island also carries history lightly worn: in 1942 the US chose Bora Bora as a South Pacific supply base — Operation Bobcat — and several thousand servicemen built the airstrip on Motu Mute that still receives every flight. Coastal guns from that era remain on the hillsides for those who walk up.

Matira,
the public mile.
The island's great free pleasure: a public beach shelving into warm, waist-deep water at the southern tip, open to everyone with a bus fare or a bicycle.
04 / A sensible first visit
Days that
use the island well.
- 01Decide motu or mainland
Motu resorts buy seclusion and views; mainland stays buy freedom, dinners you can walk to, and half the price. Neither is wrong.
- 02Book the lagoon tour first
The classic circuit — rays, sharks, coral gardens, motu picnic — is the island's one unmissable day. Boats fill in high season.
- 03Keep one village morning
Vaitape's shops, the fruit stands, and the hillside guns give the postcard some ground truth.
- 04Pair it with a neighbor
Bora works best at three or four nights. Combine with Taha'a, Maupiti, or a Tuamotu atoll for contrast.
