Bora Bora,
the lagoon island.

An eroded volcano inside a ring of motu, the widest lagoon in the Society Islands, and the most expensive hotels in the country.

The volcanic core has eroded to two towers, Otemanu at 727 m and Pahia beside it. The reef that once fringed the mountain now carries a ring of motu around a lagoon famous for its blues. About 10,758 people live here, most of them in Vaitape, fifty minutes by air from Tahiti.

01 · A volcano dissolving into water

What you are
looking at.

Bora Bora is the middle chapter of an island's life. Tahiti is the young one, still mostly mountain. The atolls of the Tuamotu are the end of the story, with the mountain gone entirely. Bora Bora sits between: the peak is still there but shrinking, the reef has drifted out to sea, and the lagoon in between has widened into the thing everybody comes for. Darwin described this sequence in 1842 after the voyage of the Beagle.

The island also carries history lightly. In 1942 the United States chose it as a South Pacific supply base, Operation Bobcat, and several thousand servicemen built the airstrip on Motu Mute that still receives every flight. Two seven-inch naval guns at Fitiu'u Point, restored with trilingual boards, are a fifteen-minute walk from the road on a path the landowners keep. They never fired in anger.

The island's one public beach, at the southern tip: white sand shelving into waist-deep glassy water, open to anyone with a bus fare or a bicycle. Hotels, snack bars and a dive centre line the point. Arrive early on cruise-ship days.

The lagoon day

The classic circuit stops at a stingray site, a blacktip site and a coral garden, usually with a motu lunch. Smaller boats mean less crowding at each stop. Mantas visit a cleaning station at Anau; lemon sharks patrol the outer slope at Tapu.

Vaitape and the hills

The village does the island's errands: the quay, rentals, the independent restaurants, the Vaitape roulottes. In July its square hosts the island's Heiva. Up the hill from Faanui, an easy 2 km walk reaches a viewpoint and the wartime guns.

03 · The decision

Motu
or mainland.

Location decides everything here. The big resorts all sit on the outer motu, reached by their own boats from the airport pontoon: the Four Seasons, the St. Regis, the Conrad, which reopened on 1 May 2026 after renovation, the Westin, which opened in September 2024 in the former Le Méridien, and Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts on the sunset side. The InterContinental Thalasso closed in June 2026 and is due back as the Regent in late 2027; ignore third-party sites still selling it. Overwater bungalows run from about 50,000 XPF to well over 200,000 a night.

The main island is the other answer. Two three-star hotels near Matira, Le Maitai and the Royal Bora Bora, put the beach on foot at a fraction of the bill. Village Temanuata has eleven fan-cooled bungalows on the sand at Matira Point for roughly 27,000 to 32,000 XPF for two. Bora Vaite Lodge in the north is the budget template: shared bathroom, guest kitchen, cash only. Motu resorts buy seclusion and the view; mainland stays buy freedom, dinners you can walk to, and half the price. On a motu every evening ends when the last shuttle does.

Four steps.

    Decide motu or mainland

    Seclusion and the view, or freedom and half the price. Check which way an overwater room faces, how far out on the pontoon it sits, and the shuttle times before you book.

  2. 02

    Book the lagoon tour first

    The circuit of rays, sharks and coral garden is the island's one unmissable day, and boats fill in high season.

  3. 03

    Keep one village morning

    Vaitape's shops, the fruit stands and the hillside guns are the main island's half-day.

  4. 04

    Pair it with a neighbour

    Bora Bora works at three or four nights. Combine it with Taha'a, Maupiti or an atoll for contrast, and put it at the end so the budget breaks last.

06 · Who it does not suit

Who runs out
of things to do.

Hikers and road-trippers run out of Bora Bora in a day: the road is 32 km, the one hikeable summit needs a guide and the famous one is off limits. Budget travellers can manage with a pension, the free shuttle, the roulottes, a bicycle and one shared boat, but it will still be the dearest island of the trip. On cruise days, capped at 1,200 passengers, the quay, the taxis and Matira are noticeably busier. If what you want is village life and an empty beach, Maupiti, Huahine or Taha'a are closer to the idea.

Known for: A wide lagoon ringed by motu, with Otemanu in the middle · Overwater rooms at the country's highest hotel prices · Matira, the island's one public beach · Manta and lemon-shark dives · US coastal guns on the ridges.

Couples with the budget for it, and anyone whose trip is mostly about water. The lagoon is broad, sheltered and easy for snorkelers and first-time divers; the outer reef has sharks for those with a certification. It also suits a short, well-organised stop: flights are frequent, and the resorts handle the logistics from the airport pontoon onwards.

Typical stay: 3–4 nights. Enough for a lagoon day, a dive or the Pahia climb, a village morning and one slow day; past that, the island's size and the nightly rate both start to show.

Getting there,
getting around.

International
Every international flight lands at Faa'a (PPT) on Tahiti; Bora Bora has no international service. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way — on arrival day, more is wiser.1
Domestic flights
Air Tahiti flies Tahiti–Bora Bora (259 km) in about 50 minutes with about 33 nonstop departures a week between Air Tahiti and Air Moana (a schedule aggregator's count, October 2026), with direct links to Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Maupiti, Tikehau and Fakarava. Air Moana also flies in from Tahiti, Moorea and Raiatea. Check in 1 h 30 before departure.2,3
Ferry
The Apetahi Express leaves Papeete at 06:30 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and reaches Bora Bora at 13:20 after Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a, then continues to Maupiti (arr. 14:55). Return Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 08:05, into Papeete at 15:00 (timetable from 15 June 2026). Fares from Tahiti: 8,000 XPF (≈ US$78) one way in school term, 9,000 XPF (≈ US$88) in holidays, two 23 kg bags included, non-refundable.4
Cargo ships
Mixed cargo ships of the Société polynésienne de navigation serve the Leeward Islands from Papeete, but breakdowns reshuffle the rotations (as in early 2026). Treat them as an adventure, not a plan; the ferry does the same run in a day.5
Cruise ships
Ships anchor in the lagoon and send passengers ashore at Vaitape. The commune caps cruise passengers at 1,200 a day, which keeps the large ships away; on ship days the quay, the taxis and Matira are noticeably busier.6
Airport shuttle
Air Tahiti's 'Bora Bora Navette' crosses from Motu Mute to Vaitape in about 15 minutes, free with your ticket and with no booking. For departures it leaves the Vaitape quay 1 h 30 before the flight; the week's times are posted on the quay. Seats are limited.7
Resort boats
Motu resorts meet their guests at the airport pontoon with their own boats. After that, every trip to the main island runs on the resort's shuttle timetable — ask for times and charges before choosing a room.8
Rental cars, scooters & bikes
Rental desks cluster at the Vaitape quay (Tahiti Tourisme lists Avis Bora Bora, Rani Car, FH Rental and Heitaki Bora Rental Cars). A bike suits the flat coast road; a car or scooter for a day is plenty.8
Taxis & le truck
Taxis and the open-sided 'trucks' wait at the Vaitape quay. For the ride back, have your hotel or restaurant call one.8

09 · Where to stay

Which side
of the island.

Matira & the south. The beach, a run of mid-range hotels and pensions, snack bars, a dive centre and a few dinners within walking distance. The closest thing to a self-sufficient base on the main island. Best for: Beach access, mid-range stays, no-car trips.

Vaitape & the west coast. The village and its quay: shuttle, ferry, rentals, shops and the independent restaurants. Practical rather than pretty, and the cheapest place to sleep near everything. Best for: Budget stays, errands, arrivals and departures.

Faanui, Anau & the north. Residential, quiet and green, with the WWII sites and the marae. Guesthouses here are cheaper and further from the beach; a bike or car stops being optional. Best for: Long stays, independent travellers.

The eastern motu. The big-name resorts face Otemanu across the lagoon from the outer reef islets. Seclusion and the postcard view, at the price of a boat ride for anything off-property. Best for: Honeymoons, overwater rooms.

The western & southern motu. Sunset side. Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts on Motu Tevairoa is ten minutes by boat from the airport and fifteen from Vaitape; the Conrad sits on its own motu in the south lagoon. Best for: Overwater rooms closer to the village.

Luxury resorts
The big resorts all sit on motu, reached by their own boats. The Westin reopened in September 2024 in the former Le Méridien, with 128 overwater bungalows; the Conrad reopened on 1 May 2026 after renovation. The InterContinental Thalasso closed on 1 June 2026 and is due back as Regent Bora Bora in late 2027 — ignore third-party sites still selling it. Pensions & guesthouses
Family-run bungalows, mostly at Matira and along the main island, plus a few on the motu. Village Temanuata has 11 fan-cooled bungalows on the beach at Matira Point; Chez Alice et Raphael is three bungalows on Motu Ome — no air conditioning, no TV. Family-friendly
Bora Bora Holidays Lodge in Nunue has 12 rooms, studios, bungalows and apartments for up to 38 people and two pools. Village Temanuata also has a family bungalow (see its rate sheet). Examples: Bora Bora Holidays Lodge, Village Temanuata.13
Budget
Bora Vaite Lodge, in the north, is the island's budget template: shared bathroom, breakfast included, guest kitchen, cash only, and daytime transfers to Matira or Vaitape at 800 XPF (≈ US$8) per person return. Rates on request. Examples: Bora Vaite Lodge.14

Beaches, reef
and open water.

Matira Beach
Tahiti Tourisme calls it the island's only public beach. Hotels, snack bars and a dive centre line the point, so it works as a whole day without a boat; arrive early on cruise-ship days.15Beach
Ray and shark stops
The standard lagoon circuit stops at a stingray site, a blacktip-shark site and a coral garden, usually with a motu lunch. Blacktip reef sharks are shy; visibility can reach 40 m. Tahiti Tourisme lists Moana Adventure Tours, Rosto Services and Toa Boat among private-boat operators. Smaller boats mean less crowding at each stop; don't touch or feed anything.15Lagoon
Anau
The lagoon site for manta rays, which visit to be cleaned; Tahiti Tourisme notes the dive centres protect it. A lagoon dive, so within reach of newer divers. Sightings are likely, not promised.16Diving

  1. 01

    Mount Pahia

    Hike. The 661 m summit you can actually reach: a 7 km trail with rope sections and slopes that turn slick after rain. Tahiti Tourisme says to use a guide; go early, in a dry spell.19

  2. 02

    Mount Otemanu

    Viewpoint. The 727 m summit is not reachable — Tahiti Tourisme's own hiking guide says so. Guided trails climb partway for the view; for the famous profile, the lagoon is the better seat.20

  3. 03

    Faanui ridge and the US guns

    Hike. From Faanui village, an easy walk of about 2 km reaches a viewpoint; the trail continues along the ridge to two US guns that never fired in anger.21

  4. 04

    Ha'amaire battery, Fitiu'u Point

    Archaeology. Two 7-inch naval guns, two small ammunition stores and a firing post, restored by the association Mémoire polynésienne, with boards in Tahitian, French and English. About 15 minutes' walk from the main road on a path kept by the landowners.22

  5. 05

    Marae Fare Opu

    Archaeology. Just north of Faanui, squeezed between the road and the shore and partly under the road. Two slabs carry turtle petroglyphs.23

  6. 06

    Vaitape

    Culture. Where the island does its errands and the best place to meet craftspeople. In July, Tuvavau square hosts the island's Heiva dance and song competitions.15

13 · Food and shopping

What to eat,
and where.

Dining splits three ways. Resort restaurants are the default for motu guests and are priced like the rooms; eating anywhere else means the resort shuttle, so check its last boat. On the main island, Vaitape and the Matira strip hold the independent restaurants, and the roulottes (food trucks) in Vaitape are the cheapest hot meal on the island. Order poisson cru. Book ahead in high season — the good tables are few. Bloody Mary's, the island's best-known name, was listed as temporarily closed by Tahiti Tourisme in August 2026; check before planning an evening around it.

Shopping. Vaitape is the shopping street: pareos, carvings, monoi and black pearls. The pearls are not a local crop — in 2019 the Tuamotu and Gambier produced 71% and 25% of the country's output, with a few farms in the Leeward Islands, mainly on Taha'a. Ask for a written description of size, shape and quality, and compare with Papeete before spending seriously.

One island,
several trips.

Families
Workable, with planning. The water off Matira is shallow and calm, and Tahiti Tourisme rates the Valley of Kings walk a half-day hike for families. A main-island base with a kitchen — Bora Bora Holidays Lodge, for instance — keeps costs sane; motu resorts put every outing on a boat timetable, which teenagers tolerate better than toddlers. Pack reef shoes.
Honeymoons
What the island's hotel stock is built for. Overwater rooms differ more than the brochures admit: check which way the room faces (Otemanu or sunset), how far out on the pontoon it sits, and the shuttle times to Vaitape. Splitting the stay between an overwater room and a cheaper beach or garden room is the easiest saving.
On a budget
Possible, not cheap. Take the free airport shuttle, stay in a pension at Matira or Vaitape, eat at the roulottes, rent a bike, and spend on one shared lagoon tour. If you have a day, the Apetahi Express from Papeete costs a fraction of the airfare.
Nightlife
Little to speak of: hotel bars, resort dinner shows, and Polynesian bands twice a week at the Royal Bora Bora. Evenings end early, and on the motu they end when the last boat does.

Three to four nights covers a lagoon day, a dive or the Pahia climb, a Vaitape morning and one day of doing nothing. Bora Bora is the natural last stop of a Society Islands loop: the Apetahi Express links it to Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a and runs on to Maupiti, and Air Tahiti flies direct to Tikehau and Fakarava for a Tuamotu leg that swaps mountains for reef. If one island is going to break the budget, put it at the end — and keep a buffer night on Tahiti before the international flight.
