Bora Bora
or Moorea?
One is a lagoon with a mountain in it, the other a mountain island with a lagoon around it. They differ most on price, transport and what you do on land.
Bora Bora's lagoon and outer motu from the air
Islands · Bora Bora · Bora Bora vs Moorea
Most people asking this have room for one island, or think they do. The answer turns on three things: whether the overwater room is the point of the trip, whether you want to drive and walk, and how much you will pay per night for the bigger lagoon. The figures below come from the statistics institute, the transport operators and the tourist board, checked in October 2026.
01 · The short answer
Lagoon or
landscape.
Bora Bora if the trip is about the water. The lagoon is wide and ringed by motu, Otemanu stands in the middle, and the big overwater resorts are here. It costs more than twice as much a night, and on land it runs out fast: the coast road is about 32 km1 and the famous summit is off limits2.
Moorea if you want to move. It has a 60 km coast road, ridge trails, marae in the forest and humpback whales outside the reef from July3, with ferries from Papeete all day4. Its hotels averaged 60,266 XPF (≈ US$591, approximate) a room-night in July–September 2025, against 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343) on Bora Bora5.
With a week or more, and the budget, do both: Moorea first, Bora Bora last. With four nights or fewer, pick one. Two islands in four nights is mostly transit.
02 · Side by side
The two islands
in numbers.
- From Tahiti
- Bora Bora: About 50 minutes by air with Air Tahiti or Air Moana67, then a boat from the airport motu; or the Apetahi Express ferry three days a week, 6 h 508
Moorea: Ferries from Papeete many times a day, 30–50 minutes, from 1,100 XPF (≈ US$11) one way in 20269; or a 15-minute flight10 - Hotel rate
- Bora Bora: 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343) average per room-night before tax, Jul–Sep 20255
Moorea: 60,266 XPF (≈ US$591), same quarter, same survey5 - Hotel occupancy
- Bora Bora: 73.9%, Jul–Sep 20255
Moorea: 84.4%, the highest of any island in the survey — book early5 - Rain a year
- Bora Bora: ≈ 1,660 mm at the airport motu, 1991–202012
Moorea: ≈ 2,690 mm on the north-west coast, 1993–202013 - The lagoon
- Bora Bora: Wide and motu-ringed; Matira is the one public beach14
Moorea: Narrower; rays, blacktips and coral within kayak range of public beaches15 - Overwater rooms
- Bora Bora: The country's biggest choice, on the outer motu; bungalows from ≈ 50,000 XPF (≈ US$490) to well over 200,000 XPF (≈ US$1,960) a night, 202616
Moorea: Three resorts with overwater rooms: Hilton, Sofitel Kia Ora and Manava17 - On land
- Bora Bora: Mount Pahia (661 m) with a guide18, WWII guns, a roadside marae
Moorea: The Belvedere, restored Opunohu marae, the Three Coconuts trail, pineapple fields19 - Getting around
- Bora Bora: Boats; a bike or one day's rental for the main island
Moorea: A car for at least one day; the bus 'isn't particularly efficient', says the tourist board20
Verdict. Bora Bora for the lagoon and the overwater room with the view people travel for. Moorea for an active, cheaper few days with your own wheels and no flight. If the budget covers only one splurge, spend it on Bora Bora and keep the stay short; if it doesn't, Moorea is a better trip than a squeezed Bora Bora, not a consolation prize.
03 · Cost
More than twice
the price a night.
The cleanest comparison is the statistics institute's quarterly hotel survey. In July–September 2025 the international hotels on Bora Bora took an average of 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343) per room-night before tax; Moorea's took 60,266 XPF (≈ US$591)5. Same quarter, same method: Bora Bora costs about 2.3 times as much a night. Tahiti's hotels, for scale, averaged 33,327 XPF (≈ US$327)5.
The gap holds lower down the market. Village Temanuata, a beach pension at Matira Point, publishes about 27,000–32,000 XPF (≈ US$265–315) a bungalow for two, plus VAT (undated rate sheet, checked 2026)22. Pension Motu Iti on Moorea lists 10,500–12,000 XPF (≈ US$103–118) a bungalow, tax included, and dormitory beds at 2,650 XPF (≈ US$26) with breakfast (listing updated November 2025)23.
Getting there widens it. The Moorea ferry costs 1,100–2,350 XPF (≈ US$11–23) one way in 2026, depending on the company94. Bora Bora means a flight — Air Tahiti's lowest fare on its site was 40,246 XPF (≈ US$395) return with taxes in October 2026, against 16,573 XPF (≈ US$162) for Moorea610 — or the Apetahi Express at 8,000–9,000 XPF (≈ US$78–88) one way in 2026, three days a week24.
Food is closer than the rooms. The tourist board's 2026 guide for Moorea puts food trucks at 1,500–2,500 XPF (≈ US$15–25) a dish and ordinary restaurants at 2,500–6,000 XPF (≈ US$25–59) a head25. Bora Bora has its own cheap end in the Vaitape roulottes, and its top end at La Villa Mahana, where the set menus are 12,000 and 17,900 XPF (≈ US$118 and US$175) in 2026, wine extra26. On a motu, every meal off the property also costs a shuttle ride.
04 · Getting there
A ferry ride
or a flight.
Moorea is the one island with boats from Papeete all day, so you can reach it from the international airport without another plane. Three companies sail the Papeete–Vaiare line: Aremiti, Tauati Ferry and Vaeara'i27. Aremiti alone ran nine sailings from Papeete on weekdays in October 2026, from 05:15 to 17:304; Vaeara'i takes 50 minutes dock to dock28. Cars cross too, and a car slot is worth booking at weekends. Terevau, the old fourth name, was liquidated on 13 April 202629; guides that still list it are out of date.
Bora Bora is a flight: 259 km, about 50 minutes6, with about 33 nonstop departures a week between Air Tahiti and Air Moana (a schedule aggregator's count, October 2026)30. The airport sits on Motu Mute. Resort boats meet their guests at the pontoon; everyone else takes Air Tahiti's free shuttle to Vaitape, about 15 minutes, which for departures leaves the quay 1 h 30 before the flight31. Allow at least 90 minutes between an international arrival and the domestic flight, and 120 minutes the other way32.
The slow alternative is the Apetahi Express, leaving Papeete at 06:30 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and reaching Bora Bora at 13:20 after Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a8. It is a day spent at sea, but a cheap one, and a decent way to see the Leeward Islands on the way.
You don't have to go back through Papeete to combine them. Air Tahiti and Air Moana both fly Moorea–Bora Bora direct, in about 50 minutes67; a schedule aggregator counted seven flights a week between them in October 202633. There is no boat between the two: the ferry to Bora Bora leaves from Papeete8.
05 · The water
Width against
access.
Bora Bora's lagoon is the bigger thing to see, and mostly seen from a boat. The standard circuit stops at a stingray site, a blacktip shark site and a coral garden, usually with lunch on a motu; the tourist board puts visibility at up to 40 m14. Divers get manta rays at the Anau cleaning station inside the lagoon and large lemon sharks on the outer slope at Tapu21. Without a boat you have Matira, the island's one public beach14, which is good but is one beach.
Moorea's lagoon is narrower and easier to reach on your own. In the north-west, a sandbank off Les Tipaniers is worked by rays and blacktip reef sharks; it is too far to swim, so take a kayak or a boat34. Temae, near the ferry, is the long public beach with showers and toilets35; Ta'ahiamanu at the mouth of Opunohu Bay is the calmer one36. Lagoon tours add the underwater tikis off Papetoai, sunk in 1998 by the artist Tihoti Guy34.
Moorea also has the whales. Humpbacks are around from July to the end of October, and the rules are strict: no whale watching inside the lagoon, bays or passes, only licensed boats inside the 300 m zone, and at most seven people in the water including the guide37.
On both islands, don't touch or feed the rays and sharks. French Polynesia's environment code bans attracting wild animals with food where it bothers other users or draws predators38, and every shark species is protected39. A boat that throws fish to gather animals is breaking that rule; choose another.
06 · On land
One island
you can walk.
Moorea has a full day or two inland. The Opunohu valley road climbs past pineapple fields to the Belvedere, with both bays below Mount Rotui. Along the way are the marae: more than 500 structures were inventoried in the valley in 1960 and the main ones restored in 196940. From the Belvedere, the Three Coconuts trail runs 6.6 km past a waterfall to a pass, free and muddy after rain19; Magic Mountain, from Papetoai, is a 3.3 km paved round trip for 200 XPF (≈ US$2) at the hut (listing updated December 2025)41. Te Fare Natura, the eco-museum on Opunohu Bay, covers a wet morning for 2,100 XPF (≈ US$21), non-EU adults, 202642.
Bora Bora has a morning or two. Mount Pahia, 661 m, is the summit you can reach: a 7 km trail with rope sections, best with a guide and in a dry spell18. Otemanu, 727 m, cannot be climbed — the tourist board's own hiking guide says so2. From Faanui, an easy walk of about 2 km reaches a viewpoint and continues along the ridge to US guns from the Second World War43; the restored Ha'amaire battery at Fitiu'u Point is a 15-minute walk from the road44. Marae Fare Opu sits beside the road north of Faanui, with turtle petroglyphs on two slabs45.
Put simply: hikers and drivers run out of Bora Bora in a day, and run out of Moorea in three or four.
07 · Who each suits
Seven kinds
of trip.
Honeymoon, budget no object
Bora Bora. This is what its hotel stock is built for. Check which way the room faces (Otemanu or sunset), how far out on the pontoon it sits, and the shuttle times to Vaitape before booking.
Honeymoon, budget watched
Moorea, or Moorea plus two or three Bora Bora nights at the end. Moorea's hotels average under half Bora Bora's room rate5, and three of its resorts have overwater rooms: the Hilton, the Sofitel Kia Ora and the Manava17.
Hikers and drivers
Moorea, clearly: ridge trails from the Belvedere, the valley marae, the 60 km coast road. Bora Bora's one summit hike needs a guide.
Tight budget
Moorea: the ferry from 1,100 XPF (2026)9, pensions and dorm beds, food trucks and free public beaches. Bora Bora on a budget is possible, but it will still be the dearest island of the trip.
A first trip of ten days
Both. Four nights on Moorea, three or four on Bora Bora, a night on Tahiti at each end. That is the shape of the first route in our itineraries.
08 · Doing both
Moorea first,
Bora Bora last.
- 01
Land, then cross
Most international flights arrive at Faa'a; sleep near the airport if you land late, then take a morning ferry from the Papeete terminal. If you land early, Moorea can be the same day.
- 02
Moorea, three to five nights
A lagoon day, a valley day with the Belvedere and the marae, a hike or (July–October) a whale trip, and a spare day for rain. Base in the north-west if you want to manage without a car most days.
- 03
- 04
Bora Bora, three or four nights
Book the lagoon tour for the first full day, so weather has room to move it. If budget allows, split the stay between a main-island hotel and a motu resort.
- 05
One last night on Tahiti
Never chain the last Bora Bora flight to the international departure. Air Tahiti's own minimum is 120 minutes from a domestic to an international flight32; a night in between is the safer margin.
09 · Questions
Questions.
- 01
Is Bora Bora worth it over Moorea?
If the lagoon and an overwater room are the point of the trip, yes: nothing on Moorea matches the view of Otemanu across Bora Bora's lagoon. If you want to hike, drive and spend less, Moorea is the better island. Bora Bora's hotels averaged 137,000 XPF a room-night in July–September 2025, Moorea's 60,266 XPF5.
- 02
Which is better for a honeymoon, Moorea or Bora Bora?
Bora Bora has more overwater resorts and the famous view; Moorea has three resorts with overwater rooms, hotel rates averaging under half Bora Bora's, and the hikes and drives. Many couples do both: Moorea first for the active days, Bora Bora last for the lagoon.
- 03
Is Moorea cheaper than Bora Bora?
Yes, by a wide margin. In the statistics institute's July–September 2025 survey, Moorea's hotels averaged 60,266 XPF (≈ US$591) per room-night before tax and Bora Bora's 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343)5. The Moorea ferry also costs a fraction of the Bora Bora flight.
- 04
Which has better snorkeling?
Bora Bora's lagoon is bigger and its coral gardens and ray and shark stops are the classic boat day. Moorea's is easier to reach yourself: kayak out to the Tipaniers sandbank, or swim from Ta'ahiamanu or Temae.
- 05
How many nights should I spend on each?
Three to five on Moorea and three to four on Bora Bora. Fewer than three on either is mostly transit; more than four on Bora Bora suits people who mainly want to rest in a good room.
