Bora Bora · Money

What Bora Bora
really costs.

The room is most of the bill. Here is everything else, from published prices, and three worked days for two.

Overwater rooms on a motu, with Otemanu and Pahia behind

Islands · Bora Bora · Trip cost

A day for two on Bora Bora costs from about 45,000 XPF (≈ US$445) in a beach pension, eating from the food trucks, to about 180,000 XPF (≈ US$1,765) in a motu resort, before flights. The difference is almost all the room. The island's international hotels averaged 119,013 XPF (≈ US$1,167) per room-night in 2025, before tax, the highest in French Polynesia1.

01 · Where the money goes

The room,
then everything else.

Bora Bora is where French Polynesia's expensive rooms are. In July–September 2025 it let 30.5% of all the international-hotel rooms sold in the country, at an average of 137,000 XPF a night; Moorea's hotels averaged 60,266 XPF and Tahiti's 33,327 over the same quarter2. Over the whole of 2025 the gap held: 119,013 XPF on Bora Bora, 58,323 on Moorea, 31,318 on Tahiti1.

Those are averages of what guests actually paid per room-night let, before tax, across garden rooms and overwater villas alike1. The next lines down are the flights in, the boat to a motu if you stay on one, food, and one or two paid days on the lagoon. The cheap things on Bora Bora are the ones that cost nothing: Matira beach, the free airport boat to Vaitape, the coast road.

Every price below is a published figure with its date. The currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro at 1 € = 119.332 XPF3; we convert to US dollars at about 102 XPF per US$1, so treat dollar figures as approximate.

03 · Reading the room prices

Averages,
ranges, quotes.

The ISPF figure is the useful one for budgeting because it is what rooms actually sold for, not a rack rate. It is still an average across very different rooms. The overwater ranges from Tahiti Tourisme give the spread: the cheapest overwater bungalows start around 50,000 XPF, the top villas run past 200,0004.

The month matters as much as the tier. In the twelve months to July 2026 Bora Bora's hotel average ran from 102,956 XPF in February to 145,992 in August, about 30% apart76. The best-time page has every month; per-resort prices and rankings are on where to stay and the best resorts.

Main-island stays are the other world. Village Temanuata, on the sand at Matira Point, publishes 27,000 XPF for a garden bungalow and 32,000 for a beach bungalow, for two8; add 14% in VAT and the tourist tax and the beach bungalow comes to about 36,600 XPF (≈ US$359) a night. That is less than a third of the island's hotel average.

06 · Three worked days

Three days for two,
three budgets.

  1. 01

Budget: beach pension, food trucks, e-bikes

Garden bungalow at Village Temanuata, 27,000 XPF plus 14% VAT and 50 XPF a head tourist tax: 30,8808. Lunch and dinner from the food trucks, four dishes at 1,500–2,500: 6,000–10,00017. Two e-bikes for the day: 8,40023. About 45,000–49,000 XPF (≈ US$445–485) a day for two. On the lagoon-tour day, swap the bikes for two places on a shared tour, 22,80019.

  2. 02

    Mid-range: three-star near Matira, restaurants, a car

A room at the three-star average for July–September 2025, 36,007 XPF before tax2. Lunch and dinner in restaurants at 2,500–6,000 a head: 10,000–24,00017. A car for the day: 11,90023. About 58,000–72,000 XPF (≈ US$570–705) a day for two, plus room taxes. With a shared lagoon tour instead of the car: 69,000–83,000.

  3. 03

    Luxury: a motu resort

A room at Bora Bora's international-hotel average for July–September 2025, 137,000 XPF before tax2 (overwater villas run well above it). Two meals a head in hotel restaurants at more than 8,000 each: 32,000 or more17. Boats: a destination fee such as the Westin's, 11,550 a night16, or a share of a return airport transfer. From about 180,000 XPF (≈ US$1,765) a day for two, before room taxes, drinks and activities.

  4. 04

    What the sums leave out

International and domestic flights (above), drinks, spa, a private boat, and the taxes on the room. They are our arithmetic from the published prices on this page, not quotes; a real booking can land either side. The two-person honeymoon view is on Bora Bora honeymoon.

07 · Motu or mainland

The same day,
two addresses.

The room
Motu resort: Overwater from about 50,000 XPF to more than 200,000 a night4; the island's hotel average 119,013 in 20251
Main island: Beach pension 27,000–32,000 for two plus taxes8; three-star average 32,881 across the islands1
From the airport
Motu resort: The resort's boat: 17,200 XPF return at the St. Regis, or inside the Westin's 11,550 nightly fee1516
Main island: Air Tahiti's free shuttle to Vaitape13, then a pension pick-up (2,500 return at Temanuata)8
Dinner
Motu resort: Hotel restaurants, more than 8,000 XPF a head17
Main island: Food trucks 1,500–2,500 a dish, restaurants 2,500–6,000 a head17
Getting about
Motu resort: Resort shuttles: one free run a day at the St. Regis, 3,600 XPF per person for others15
Main island: E-bike 4,200 XPF a day, car 11,90023; Matira on foot
The evening
Motu resort: Ends with the last boat: 21:00 from the St. Regis base15
Main island: Ends when you choose

Verdict. The motu buys the view, the overwater room and seclusion; the main island buys freedom and, at Temanuata's rates, about a third of the hotel average per night. A split stay gets some of both.

08 · Hidden costs

The lines
the brochure skips.

Tax on the room. ISPF's averages exclude tax1, and many rate sheets do too. Village Temanuata adds 13% VAT and 1% social VAT8: 4,480 XPF a night on a 32,000 XPF bungalow. Hotels are taxed differently: VAT on hotel accommodation is the 5% reduced rate24, with the tourism promotion levy and service added where rates exclude them. Ask whether a resort quote is tax-inclusive.

Tourist tax. A commune tax per person per night; Village Temanuata lists 50 XPF8. French Polynesia has reformed it: from 1 January 2027 each commune applies its own new grid, adopted by 31 October 2026 under raised ceilings25. Expect the figure on 2027 invoices to differ.

Destination fees and boats. The Westin charges 11,550 XPF per room per night, which covers the airport boat, daily transport to its base on the main island and some extras16. Without a resort boat, the Westin lists a motu taxi from the airport at 7,000 XPF one way16. At the St. Regis, the airport boat is 17,200 XPF return and shuttles beyond the free daily one are 3,600 XPF per person15. The Four Seasons' water taxi to Vaitape, 25 minutes, runs twice a day from Monday to Saturday on a fixed schedule26. On a motu, every dinner off the resort is a boat ride.

Meals on a motu. We found no meal-plan prices on the resort pages we checked. With hotel dining at more than 8,000 XPF a head17, a half-board offer is worth pricing before you arrive.

Small print. Apetahi Express tickets are non-refundable14. Bora Vaite Lodge takes cash only9. Rental insurance does not cover mountain roads, tracks or beaches, and free delivery applies only to main-island hotels, from 6,000 XPF of rental27. One saving: tipping is not customary in the islands3.

09 · Spending less

Where the bill
bends.

  1. 01

    Split the stay

Three nights over the water and the rest in a beach pension or a three-star near Matira. At Temanuata's beach bungalow, about 36,600 XPF with taxes8, each mainland night costs a fraction of a resort night.

  2. 02

    Move the dates

The same hotels averaged 102,956 XPF in February 2026 and 145,992 in August 202576. September and May sit in between with drier weather; see the best time to visit.

  3. 03

    Take the ferry one way

The Apetahi Express costs 16,000 XPF return in school term14, against Air Tahiti's lowest return of 40,24613. It takes most of a day (6 h 50 from Papeete)28; the flight saves it.

  4. 04

Stay where the free boat lands

Air Tahiti's shuttle to Vaitape is free with the ticket13. A main-island stay skips the resort transfer altogether.

  5. 05

Eat at the quay, ride an e-bike

    Food-truck dishes at 1,500–2,500 XPF against 2,500–6,000 a head in restaurants17; an e-bike at 4,200 a day against 11,900 for a car23.

  6. 06

    Spend on one boat day

A shared lagoon tour at about 11,400 XPF a head19 is the island's best-value paid day. Matira beach and the coast road cost nothing.
