Where to stay.
There are two kinds of accommodation in these islands: resort hotels, mostly on the motu, and family-run pensions. On many islands the pension is the only option. Most good trips use both.
Les Tipaniers, Moorea
A pension de famille is a licensed guesthouse: a few bungalows or rooms around a family home, usually with meals at a shared table. On the atolls, the Australs, the Gambier and most of the Marquesas, pensions are almost the entire lodging supply, and the host arranges the boats, the bikes and the guides.
