Maupiti is often described as Bora Bora fifty years ago: the same drowned-volcano anatomy — a green core rising 372 m, a lagoon, a ring of motu — at a fraction of the scale, 40 km further west. About 1,300 people live here, and the island has repeatedly chosen pensions over large hotels, keeping tourism in family hands.
Days organize themselves: walk the road around the island in a morning, wade the sandbar to Motu Auira at low tide, climb the ridge for the lagoon panorama, snorkel the manta cleaning station with a local guide. Everything funnels through one southern pass, Onoiau, which gives the lagoon its clarity and its moods.
