Raiatea was known in tradition as Havai'i, the source: from the marae of Taputapuatea on its southeast coast, the worship of 'Oro and the authority of its priests radiated across the eastern Pacific. Voyaging canoes carried stones from this marae to found new ones on distant islands. In 2017 the Taputapuatea cultural landscape became French Polynesia's first UNESCO World Heritage site.
The island itself is the second largest of the Society group — about 168 km², sharing one lagoon with Taha'a — with roughly 12,500 residents and the administrative capital of the Leewards at Uturoa. On the Temehani plateau above grows the tiare 'apetahi, a five-petaled flower found nowhere else on Earth and now closely protected.
