Tikehau,
the pink-sand ring.
A near-circular lagoon dusted with pink coral sand, one village, one pass, and water so full of fish that Cousteau's team came away amazed.
01 / Orientation
A circle
of quiet.
Tikehau's ring is nearly closed: a lagoon about 27 km across with a single navigable pass at Tuheiava, a rim of motu with sand blushed pink by crushed coral, and the flower-lined village of Tuherahera in the south where flights land. Around 500–600 people live here.
When Jacques Cousteau's team surveyed French Polynesia in 1987, they reported Tikehau's lagoon among the richest in fish they had seen — and the label has stuck because it keeps proving true: manta cleaning stations inside the lagoon, tuna and barracuda at the pass, terns wheeling over the bird islet at the center.

Fish first,
then everything.
Mantas at their cleaning stations, reef fish in clouds, picnic motu with nobody on them — the atoll's pleasures are mostly below the waterline.
04 / A sensible first visit
Days that
use the island well.
- 01Stay village or motu
Tuherahera pensions mean bikes and bakery mornings; motu stays mean silence and the lagoon at your steps.
- 02Book the manta morning
Guides know the cleaning stations and the etiquette: arrive slow, stay horizontal, never block the station.
- 03Circle to the bird islet
A lagoon day touching the pink sands and the tern colonies is the classic Tikehau excursion.
- 04Sync with the plane days
Flights and supply runs shape the week; confirm connections rather than assuming daily service.
