Tikehau lagoon
589 people in Tuherahera, the village by the airstrip; 20 square kilometres of land round a 461-square-kilometre lagoon; one cash machine, an infirmary with a nurse and no doctor, three shops and two snack bars. Book half board, and bring the medicines you need.
01 · Mantas with a mask
The gentlest water
in the Tuamotu.
The manta cleaning station is inside the lagoon, which means it belongs to snorkelers as much as to divers. Tikehau Diving's four-hour snorkel tour costs 10,500 XPF and takes children from six; the full day adds Eden Island and lunch on a pink-sand motu for 12,000. The rules are the same as everywhere: approach slowly, never block the station, let the animal decide.
The one pass, Tuheiava, is the atoll's main dive: moray eels, Napoleon wrasse, barracuda and tuna in its gullies, with mantas, grey and blacktip sharks and dolphins passing through. The tourist board rates it suitable for all levels, but the current decides the day. Teonai, a drop-off along small faults in the seabed, adds whitetips and dogtooth tuna. An introductory dive is 14,000 XPF from age eight; a double for certified divers 19,000.
Then the lagoon day. Bird Island, Motu Puarua, is a seabird colony of brown noddies, red-footed boobies, white terns, crested terns and frigatebirds, visited with a guide and a wide berth for the nests. Hina's Bell is a stand of fossil coral over a pool of very clear water. The fish parks are the atoll's working economy: traps in the lagoon where the catch is kept alive before the ship to Papeete.

The lodges
Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts has 21 overwater suites and bungalows on Motu Tianoa, fifteen minutes by boat. Pension Ninamu, Hakamanu Lodge and Te Manu Lodge each take a private motu, 25 to 30 minutes out, with meals included by necessity.
Tuherahera
Colourful houses, breadfruit trees, flowers, fossil-coral pools by the beaches, and nine pensions. Aito Motel Colette on a white-sand beach, Pension Hotu for up to twenty, Pension Justine with bungalows, rooms or camping in a lagoon-side garden.

What it does not have.
There is no hiking, little shade, and nothing to do at night. On a private-motu lodge every errand is a boat trip. Flights are not daily. For families with swimmers and anyone who wants the Tuamotu in miniature, that is what it offers: calm water, mantas without a dive, and a village small enough to cross by bike.

Snorkelers, families with swimmers and anyone who wants the Tuamotu in miniature: a sheltered lagoon, mantas that can be seen with a mask, and a village small enough to cross by bike. Divers get one pass, Tuheiava, full of fish. It also suits a short add-on to Rangiroa — a 20-minute flight away.
Typical stay: 3–5 nights. Time for a manta morning, a lagoon day to the pink sands and Bird Island, a pass dive or two, and a buffer for the flight schedule.

getting around.
- International
- All international flights land at Faa'a (PPT) on Tahiti. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way.1
- Domestic flights
- Air Tahiti flies Tahiti–Tikehau (308 km) in 55 minutes. The service is not daily: the Tuamotu administration's 2025 atoll sheet counted four flights a week one way and five the other. The lowest return fare shown on Air Tahiti's site in October 2026 was 45,760 XPF (≈ US$449) including taxes. Air Moana also flies in from Tahiti, Bora Bora, Rangiroa and Fakarava.2
- From Rangiroa and Fakarava
- Rangiroa is a 20-minute flight away; the 2025 sheet counted five Tikehau–Rangiroa flights a week and one to Fakarava, on Wednesdays. Air Tahiti also flies direct from Bora Bora. A boat crossing from Rangiroa can be arranged through your host.3
- Cargo ships
- Cargo ships from Papeete serve the atoll, but the western Tuamotu service has been fragile: the Dory stopped in September 2025 and the Mareva Nui broke down in January 2026. Dory 2 was due in July 2026 to carry freight and passengers weekly to Tikehau, Rangiroa, Ahe and Manihi. Check before relying on it.4
- Bikes and walking
- The village motu has only a few miles of road. Most places to stay have bikes; scooters can be rented.5
- Boats
- Everything else is by boat, and your host arranges it: transfers to motu lodges, lagoon trips, and the dive and snorkel boats, which pick up from your accommodation.5
- Airport transfers
- There is no shuttle: ask your host to meet the flight. Le Tikehau's boat takes about 15 minutes, and the private-motu lodges 25–30.2
08 · Where to stay
Which side
of the island.
Tuherahera. The village in the south, by the airport: the shops, bakery, snack bars, the ATM and several pensions, with pinkish-sand beaches at the end of the street. Best for: Pensions, bikes, budget stays.
The motu lodges. Le Tikehau on Motu Tianoa, 15 minutes by boat; Pension Ninamu on a private island in the southwest; Hakamanu and Te Manu lodges on their own pink-sand motu, 25–30 minutes out. Quiet, with meals included by necessity. Best for: Honeymoons, seclusion, kiteboarders.
The lagoon and the pass. Tuheiava pass is the only opening to the ocean; Bird Island, the manta station, Eden Island and the pink-sand motu are spread around the lagoon. Seen on day trips. Best for: Snorkeling, diving, day trips.

- Resort hotel
- Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts (formerly Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort) is the atoll's only hotel: 21 overwater suites and bungalows and 8 beach bungalows on Motu Tianoa, with a pool, two restaurants and a bar. There is no ATM on site — the village has one. Examples: Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts.6No published rates. International hotels in the Tuamotu-Gambier averaged ≈ 112,000 XPF (≈ US$1,100) per room-night before tax in Jul–Sep 2025 (ISPF) — a small, volatile sample that nearly doubled in a year, so read it as a ceiling
- Pensions & guesthouses
- Nine pensions in 2024 (Tuamotu administration count); most serve meals, and half board is the norm. Aito Motel Colette has four bungalows on a white-sand beach; Pension Hotu sleeps up to 20 in six rooms; Pension Justine offers bungalows, rooms or camping in a lagoon-side garden. - Private-motu lodges
- Pension Ninamu is an all-inclusive retreat for up to 20 guests aimed at divers, anglers and kiteboarders. Hakamanu Lodge (14 guests) is 30 minutes from the village by boat; Te Manu Lodge (up to 23) is 25 minutes out and listed as open all year in 2026. - Budget
- Camping at Pension Justine, a campsite (Tikehau Glamping) and 14 furnished rentals registered in 2024 are the cheaper options; rates on request. Examples: Pension Justine, Tikehau Glamping.3

Tuherahera
Culture. A village of colourful houses, breadfruit trees and flowers, with fossil-coral pools by its beaches. There is no hiking on the atoll.2

Fish parks
Culture. The fish traps in the lagoon are where the catch is kept alive before it is shipped to the market on Tahiti. Ask a guide to show you one.6
- 03
Eden Island
Culture. A religious community living self-sufficiently on the site of a former pearl farm; visited on some lagoon day trips.12

Craft on the quay
Market. The craft house on the quay is run partly by a local association; Tahiti Tourisme lists shell necklaces, ni'au palm-leaf baskets and wood carvings as the local work.3

What to eat,
and where.
Book half board: Tahiti Tourisme recommends including meals with your room, and in 2025 the village had two snack bars, a bakery and three shops. Pension cooking is simple home food built on the day's fish — poisson cru (ia ota) and grilled reef fish. Le Tikehau's guests eat at its two restaurants. Don't count on drinkable tap water: the village's drinking-water point was out of service in 2025 and water is sold by the litre, so ask your host.
Shopping. Very little. Local craft — shell necklaces and woven baskets — is sold on the quay and at a few private outlets. There are no pearl farms on Tikehau (2024); buy pearls on Rangiroa or in Papeete. Bring cash: there is one ATM, at the post office, which keeps short morning hours.

- Families
- One of the easier atolls with children who swim: calm lagoon water, mantas without a dive, snorkel tours from age 6 and introductory dives from 8. The limits are medical — an infirmary with one nurse, no doctor — and sun. Pack reef shoes, rash vests and any medicines you need.
- Honeymoons
- Le Tikehau has the overwater rooms; the private-motu lodges offer more seclusion and fewer facilities. Either way, meals, transfers and outings run through the hotel.
- On a budget
- A village pension with half board, a bike and one shared lagoon day is the cheap version. Camping exists.
- Nightlife
- There is none: dinner at your pension or hotel, and the stars.

Three to five nights is enough for the mantas, a lagoon day, a dive or two and some time doing very little. Tikehau pairs naturally with Rangiroa (20 minutes by air) — Tikehau for the quiet lagoon, Rangiroa for the passes and services — and Air Tahiti also flies direct to Bora Bora and, once a week, to Fakarava. Build the itinerary around the flight days, not the other way round.
