A sea
inside a reef.
Rangiroa is among the largest atolls in the world: a coral ring roughly 80 km long and up to 32 km wide, enclosing a lagoon that behaves like open water — squalls, horizons, its own navigation. Around 2,600 people live on the northern rim, strung between the two navigable passes, Avatoru and Tiputa.
The passes are the engine. Twice a day the ocean pours in and out, carrying sharks, dolphins, rays, and divers with it. Tiputa's resident bottlenose dolphins play in the outflow most evenings — visible from the point without getting wet. Beyond the strip: the Blue Lagoon, the pink-sand reaches of the southeast, and one improbable vineyard growing on a motu.

On the right tide, divers drop outside the reef and let the ocean carry them through Tiputa Pass into the lagoon — the atoll's signature ride.
