Fakarava anchors a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere reserve covering seven atolls of its commune, and the designation shows in the water: shark populations of rare density, unbroken coral, lagoon nurseries. The atoll is a rectangle roughly 60 km by 21 km; under 900 people live here, most in Rotoava near the northern pass.
That northern pass, Garuae, is the widest in French Polynesia — a kilometre and a half of moving ocean. At the opposite corner, the narrow southern pass of Tumakohua (Tetamanu) delivers the famous 'wall of sharks': hundreds of grey reef sharks stacked in the current, with the old coral church of a vanished village on the shore behind.

A village

Rotoava runs at bicycle speed: a lighthouse of coral blocks, pink-sand ovens of the old church, dive skiffs coming and going with the tide.
04 / A sensible first visit

- 01Split your nights
Three or four in Rotoava for services and Garuae diving, then two or three at the south pass if you can secure them.
- 02Let dives lead
Operators run on tides. Non-divers still get the show: the south-pass snorkel over the shark channel is world class.
- 03Provision like an islander
Shops are small and the supply ship weekly. Cash, sunscreen, and repellent come with you.
- 04Leave no trace
The biosphere status is earned. No feeding, no touching, nothing taken but photographs.
