Stay · Best resorts

This ranks whole resorts, not rooms: the water rooms have their own ranking. It is built from what each hotel publishes about itself, the official tourism listings, the statistics institute's price data and the one independent hotel assessment that covers French Polynesia, the MICHELIN Guide's Keys. It is editorial, independent and unpaid. No hotel paid to appear or saw it before publication, there are no affiliate links, and it is not based on our own stays.

01 · How we ranked

Five criteria,
in this order.

1 · The water at the door
Lagoon depth and clarity, snorkelling from the room or the beach, and the view. On these islands that is most of what the money buys. From each resort's own descriptions and our island guides
2 · The room
Size, privacy, private pools, and how many units share the island. Sizes are the hotels' own published figures.Checked on each hotel's site, October 2026
3 · Independent recognition
The MICHELIN Guide's Keys, its hotel distinction, from one to three. Five hotels in French Polynesia hold Keys in the 2026 selection.1The only hotel assessment we found that covers the whole country
4 · Logistics and inclusions
Transfer time from the airport, what the rate includes (breakfast, transfers, shuttles) and how much of the stay runs on a boat timetable.A resort on a motu is a boat ride from everything else
5 · Reliability in 2026
Fully open, partly closed for works, or recently renamed. A resort with construction on site drops a place this quarter.Reviewed every quarter
The rules
No more than three resorts from one island. Only properties taking guests in October 2026. No paid placements, no affiliate links, no hosted stays.Last reviewed 19 October 2026

02 · The ranking

Eight resorts,
best first.

  1. 01

    The Brando, Tetiaroa

A private atoll 20 minutes by private plane from Tahiti, leaving from the resort's own lounge.2 There are 35 villas and one residence on the motu Onetahi; the smallest, a one-bedroom villa, is 96 m² with a plunge pool.3 It is the only hotel in the country with Three MICHELIN Keys,45 and Tetiaroa Society guides run the nature programme. It ranks first on water, privacy and recognition together. Downsides: there are no overwater rooms, every outing depends on the resort, and its site lists offers but no nightly rates (checked October 2026).2

  2. 02

    Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora

115 units on a private motu facing Otemanu and Pahia: 108 overwater bungalows, suites included, and seven beachfront villa estates.6 The entry overwater suite is 100 m², and every stay includes return airport transfers and daily breakfast.6 Children 17 and under stay free in their parents' room.6 Two MICHELIN Keys, for the second year running.1 The most complete resort on Bora Bora, and the best set up for families, with a kids' club for ages 5 to 12.7 The catches: a compulsory 10% resort fee and 5% service charge on every booking, the pool and main beach closed for works from 4 January to 24 February 2027,8 and the one every motu resort shares, a boat ride to dinner anywhere else, on the island with the country's highest hotel prices.9

  3. 03

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort

On Motu Ome'e, with overwater villas from 1,550 sq ft (≈ 144 m²), which Marriott calls the largest in French Polynesia and the South Pacific.10 Its private Lagoonarium is a protected stretch of lagoon with pontoons and free snorkel gear; the spa sits on its own islet; there are four restaurants and two bars on 17 hectares.10 Two MICHELIN Keys.11 The biggest rooms on this list and the best snorkelling inside a resort. Downsides: the boats cost extra, 17,200 XPF (≈ US$169) for the return airport transfer and 3,600 XPF (≈ US$35) a person for each main-island run beyond one free shuttle a day, and every spa booking requires a day pass.10

  4. 04

Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts, Taha'a

On Motu Tautau, with Taha'a on one side and Bora Bora across the water on the other: 59 suites and villas, including two royal villas.12 It was French Polynesia's first Relais & Châteaux member, runs three restaurants, and the coral garden at the edge of the islet is a drift snorkel on the incoming tide.12 Two MICHELIN Keys.13 The best resort outside Tetiaroa and Bora Bora, and quieter than either. The cost is time: Taha'a has no airport, so it is a flight to Raiatea and a boat across the lagoon.14

  5. 05

Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts

On Motu Tevairoa, 10 minutes by boat from the airport and 15 from Vaitape, with no other hotel in its sightline.15 108 rooms and villas: garden villas with plunge pools, beach villas with pools, and overwater bungalows of 851 sq ft (≈ 79 m²).15 Two MICHELIN Keys.16 The most traditionally built of the big Bora Bora resorts and the closest to the village, which matters if you want to eat out. The lead-in overwater bungalows sit closer to the shore,15 so pay for the Lagoon or Otemanu categories if the water under the deck is the point.

  6. 06

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

On the point at Papetoai, between Opunohu Bay and the Tiahura lagoon: 104 bungalows and three bars and restaurants.17 The overwater bungalows have glass floor panels; the garden bungalows have private pools.18 For one night in October 2026 its site showed overwater bungalows from 147,486 XPF (≈ US$1,450) and pool garden bungalows from 91,180 XPF (≈ US$895).18 No MICHELIN Key, but the best overwater product on Moorea, where hotels averaged ≈ 60,300 XPF (≈ US$590) a room-night in July–September 2025, under half the Bora Bora figure.9

  7. 07

Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts, Tikehau

The Tuamotu entry: 29 units on motu Tianoa, 15 minutes by boat from the village, 21 of them overwater suites and bungalows and 8 on the beach.19 Pink sand, a lagoon with a single pass, free snorkel gear and kayaks.19 It ranks for the water, not the rooms: the resort calls itself a 4-star, and its standard overwater bungalows on the first pontoon have no direct access to the lagoon.19 No ATM on site; the village has one.19

  8. 08

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

On Temae, Moorea's long white-sand beach near the airport and the ferry: 109 villas, 38 over the water, 11 on the beach, 9 with lagoon views, 50 in the gardens and one luxury villa.20 It closed from 5 January to 31 March 2026 to rebuild its restaurants, bars and pool; the overwater villas stayed shut to 30 June, some garden and ocean-view bungalows to 31 October, and the full inventory is due back on 1 November 2026.21 The best beach on this list. It sits last because the renovation is not quite finished, and may move up once it is.

04 · Not on the list

Left out this quarter,
and why.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui reopened on 1 May 2026 after a renovation,22 and Hilton now says every villa has a private pool, though its room list still sells some categories without one.23 In October 2026 Hilton's own site still warned of construction and enhancement works in parts of the resort,24 which is the reliability criterion at work. For one October night its overwater pool villas started at 232,418 XPF (≈ US$2,280), including a 5% service charge but not taxes.23 It is ranked on the Bora Bora list, and we will look again next quarter.

The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa opened in September 2024 in the former Le Méridien, with 128 overwater bungalows.25 Its destination fee of 11,550 XPF (≈ US$113) per room per night covers airport transfers and a daily shuttle to the main island.26 It missed the cut under the three-per-island rule, not on merit alone.

InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on 1 June 2026 and is due to reopen as Regent Bora Bora in late 2027, with 84 villas.27 Some booking sites still sell it. Ignore them.

Hotel Kia Ora, Rangiroa was listed by a tour operator as closing for renovation from November 2026;28 check before booking. On Tahiti, the InterContinental is renovating in stages through 2026;29 its hotels are compared in where to stay in Tahiti.

Choose the island first.

The resort matters less than the island it sits on, because the island decides how you get there, what you do between meals and what everything costs. A ranking across the country only makes sense once that choice is made.

Bora Bora has the most top-end resorts and the highest prices, and all of them sit on motu, the reef islets around the lagoon. The airport is on a motu too: resorts meet guests with their own boats, and everyone else takes Air Tahiti's free shuttle to Vaitape, about 15 minutes.30 Choose it for the lagoon and the mountain view; budget for boats. Areas and alternatives are in where to stay in Bora Bora.

Moorea is the value island: a ferry ride from Papeete, three resorts with overwater rooms and a run of small hotels on the beach. The third resort, Manava in Maharepa, is on the Moorea ranking with the small hotels.

Taha'a and Tetiaroa each have one resort that belongs on a national list, and little else in that class: the attraction is that nobody else is there. The Tuamotu atolls trade mountains for wide, shallow lagoons and passes full of fish; there the water is the reason to sleep over it, and the rooms are simpler.

Tahiti is where every international flight lands and most trips start and end, often with a night between flights. Its hotels are useful rather than memorable, and they have their own guide: where to stay in Tahiti.

06 · What they cost

Prices, as far
as they're published.

Few of these hotels publish a rate card, and none of the rates above is a promise for your dates. Tahiti Tourisme puts Bora Bora's overwater bungalows at ≈ 50,000 XPF (≈ US$490) to well over 200,000 XPF (≈ US$1,960) a night.31

The statistics institute's averages per room-night for July–September 2025, before tax and across all room types: Bora Bora ≈ 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,340); international hotels in the Tuamotu-Gambier ≈ 112,000 XPF (≈ US$1,100), from a small and volatile sample; the Leeward Islands other than Bora Bora ≈ 69,600 XPF (≈ US$682); Moorea ≈ 60,300 XPF (≈ US$590); Tahiti ≈ 33,300 XPF (≈ US$327).9

Overwater rooms at the top resorts sit above those averages, and taxes, resort fees and boat transfers come on top. The overwater cost guide breaks the bill down.

07 · Before you book

Five questions
to ask the hotel.

Is any part of the resort closed?
Renovations here are phased: a resort can be open while a wing, a pontoon or a restaurant is not. The Sofitel on Moorea and the InterContinental on Tahiti both ran partial closures in 2026.2129
What does the transfer cost, and when is the last boat?
On a motu, the boat timetable sets your evenings. On Bora Bora the return airport boat is in the Four Seasons' rate6 and the Westin's nightly fee,26 17,200 XPF (≈ US$169) at the St. Regis10 and 18,000 XPF (≈ US$176) per person at the Conrad.32
Which room, exactly?
Position on the pontoon, the view and the water underneath vary more inside one resort than between resorts. Ask for the category and, if you can, the row.See the overwater guide
What is in the rate?
Breakfast, taxes, service charges and resort fees are quoted differently by every hotel. The Conrad's displayed rates, for instance, include a 5% service charge but not taxes.23
Is the rate refundable?
Early-booking discounts exist: in October 2026 The Brando advertised 15% off for stays booked at least 60 days ahead.2 Weigh any non-refundable rate against the cost of a missed connection on a two-flight journey.
