Plan · Honeymoon
A French Polynesia
honeymoon.
Most couples combine two or three islands. The decisions that matter are the order, the number of nights, and how many of them are spent over the water.

Plan · Honeymoon
Honeymoons are what the resort side of French Polynesia was built around. When the statistics institute last asked visitors why they came, for 2005, honeymooners were 32% of tourists, and 80% of them went to Bora Bora1. The logistics are kinder than the distance suggests: one international airport, one main domestic airline, and lagoons 15 to 55 minutes from Tahiti by air23. The mistakes are predictable — too many islands, every night overwater, the last domestic flight chained to the international one — and all avoidable. 'Tahiti honeymoon', in most searches, means this: the country, not the island.
01 · The short answer
Two islands,
ten to fourteen nights.
For a first trip: a night on Tahiti on arrival, three or four on Moorea or Taha'a, four or five on Bora Bora, and a buffer night on Tahiti before the flight home. With two weeks and a taste for snorkeling over mountains, add Tikehau or Rangiroa.
Put the dearest island last. Bora Bora's international hotels averaged about 119,000 XPF (≈ US$1,167, approximate) per room sold, before tax, over 2025, against about 58,300 XPF (≈ US$572) on Moorea and 31,300 (≈ US$307) on Tahiti4. The last island is the one that colours the memory; it is also the one where a tight budget hurts least if it runs out.
Split each resort stay. Two or three nights over the water, the rest in a beach or garden room at the same hotel, keeps most of the experience and a large share of the money. Only a few hotels publish both prices: one that did, the Conrad Bora Bora Nui, charged about 22% more for an overwater pool villa than a lagoon-view suite on land on the same October 2026 night5.
02 · Which islands
Seven candidates,
two or three per trip.

03 · How long
Nights,
island by island.
- Seven nights
- Tahiti one night, then one island for five or six, or Moorea three and Bora Bora three with no buffer — tight. Every island change costs half a day.One island is better than two rushed
- Ten nights
- Tahiti one, Moorea or Taha'a four, Bora Bora four, Tahiti one. The classic shape. The first-trip route
- Fourteen nights
- Add an atoll: Tikehau or Rangiroa for three or four nights between the Society Islands and the flight home. Air Tahiti flies direct between Bora Bora and Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava23.Mountains, then reef
- The flight in
- Los Angeles–Papeete is about 8 hours with Air Tahiti Nui; Auckland about 5; Tokyo Narita about 11 direct; Paris about 20 with a stop in Los Angeles24252627.Most arrivals land late
- From the US in 2026
- Air Tahiti Nui and Air France from Los Angeles; United (seasonally, 29 June–24 October 2026) and French bee from San Francisco; Hawaiian from Honolulu. Delta left the Los Angeles route in June 2025 and Air Tahiti Nui suspended Seattle at the end of January 2026, according to the tourist board28.Check the airline for your dates
- Connections
- Air Tahiti's minimum is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way29. Sleep on Tahiti on both ends.Never chain the last flight
04 · Combining islands
A twelve-night
honeymoon route.
- 01
Tahiti, one night
Land, sleep near the airport or on the west coast facing Moorea. An overwater room at the InterContinental, two kilometres from the terminal, is the soft landing21.
- 02
- 03
- 04
Bora Bora, four nights
From Raiatea or Tahiti by air, about 50 minutes from Tahiti23; or the Apetahi Express ferry from Taha'a, which reaches Bora Bora at 13:20 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays32. Book the room facing the way you want; see the Bora Bora honeymoon.
- 05
Tahiti, one night
The buffer before the long flight. A cancelled domestic flight on departure day is the one problem that money and charm don't fix.
05 · What it costs
Where the
money goes.
- Overwater on Bora Bora
- About 50,000 to more than 200,000 XPF (≈ US$490–1,960, approximate) a night, per the tourist board33. Displayed rates in October 2026: 122,999 XPF for two at Le Maitai (rack), 232,418 XPF before tax for a Conrad pool villa, and 216,876–738,024 XPF at the Four Seasons for a February 2027 night, fees included, tax extra34535.Per room, not per person
- Overwater elsewhere
- Le Taha'a from US$1,481 and Le Tikehau from US$1,300 a night with taxes, as Relais & Châteaux displayed them on 19 October 2026 (≈ 151,000 and 133,000 XPF, approximate)3637; the Hilton Moorea from 147,486 XPF8.Full detail in the cost guide
- Packages
- The tourist board's site lists agency packages with flights, for instance nine nights of Bora Bora overwater, Moorea and Tahiti from US$4,799 per person (≈ 490,000 XPF), as displayed in October 202638.Read the room category
- Taxes on top
- VAT on hotel rooms is 5%39; with the tourism levy and service, hotels add 15–18% where rates exclude them, plus a city tax of about 200 XPF per person per night in 2026, rising in some communes from January 2027404142.Compare totals
- Flights between islands
- Return fares from Tahiti in October 2026 started at about 16,600 XPF (≈ US$162) to Moorea by air and 45,760 XPF (≈ US$449) to Tikehau; the Moorea ferry costs a fraction of the flight2311.Air passes can be cheaper
- Eating and doing
- Resort restaurants are priced like the rooms. A set dinner at La Villa Mahana on Bora Bora is 12,000 or 17,900 XPF (≈ US$118 or 175) a head; a lagoon tour with one listed Vaitape operator runs 12,000–80,000 XPF (≈ US$118–784), shared to private (2026)4344.One splurge, then the roulottes
06 · When to go
Dry season,
outside July.
May to October is the drier, cooler half of the year; November to April is warmer, wetter, and the cyclone season45. On Bora Bora, rain falls from about 245–251 mm in December and January to about 62 mm in July46. The sea stays warm all year, about 27–29 °C47.
July is the peak: 30,990 tourists arrived in July 2025, the busiest month of the year48, and Bora Bora's international hotels averaged about 137,000 XPF a room in July–September 2025, against about 119,000 over the whole year494. May, June and September give dry-season weather with less competition for the room you want. Whale season on Moorea, July to October12, is an argument for August and September.

07 · Getting married
Legally,
or symbolically.
Foreign nationals can marry legally in French Polynesia with no residence requirement, under Article 58 of the law of 27 May 2009; French citizens follow different rules, including a month's residence in the commune50. The ceremony is civil, at the town hall (mairie) of the commune you choose, conducted by the mayor or a deputy, with at least two witnesses and a sworn translator51.
The paperwork is the long part. The tourist board's 2026 guide asks for the file to reach the town hall at least 45 days before the date, with passports, apostilled and translated birth certificates issued within six months, certificates of single status and of customary law, and a letter to the mayor requesting Article 5851. Start months ahead, and check with your own country how the marriage is registered at home. The official guide: legal weddings in The Islands of Tahiti.
Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. Only a civil marriage has legal effect; a religious or traditional ceremony is symbolic50. Resorts sell Polynesian ceremonies — the Hilton Moorea's packages include a priest, dancers and the groom's arrival by canoe52 — and the tourist board lists traditional ceremonies at Fare Hape on Tahiti and Tiki Village on Moorea, and vow renewals53.
08 · Proposals and anniversaries
The same islands,
different priorities.
A proposal needs privacy more than a view: the end-of-pontoon rooms, a private motu picnic or a sunset sail are easier to keep secret than a resort restaurant. Keep the ring in hand luggage, and tell the hotel in writing: resorts sell private dinners on a deck or a beach, such as the Sofitel's Romantic Rendez-Vous or Le Bora Bora's beach dinner5657.
An anniversary or a vow renewal is the case for a different island from the honeymoon. Taha'a or Tikehau if the first trip was Bora Bora; Bora Bora if it was a Moorea trip on a budget. Vow renewals are offered at several resorts and by traditional ceremony providers5358.
Pearls are the traditional gift. They come mostly from the Tuamotu and Gambier farms; ask for a written description of size, shape and quality, and compare prices in Papeete before spending seriously59.
