Bora Bora

Compare · Bora Bora and the Maldives

Bora Bora
or the Maldives?

One mountain in one lagoon, against 1,192 low coral islands. The Maldives has far more choice and is closer to Europe; Bora Bora has the view, and is closer to America.

Otemanu from the outer motu: the one thing a flat atoll can't offer

Islands · Bora Bora · Bora Bora vs the Maldives

People who ask this usually want the same thing from both: clear water, an overwater room, a long way from home. The two deliver it differently. The Maldives is a country of flat coral atolls with 179 resorts in operation1; Bora Bora is one high island with a mountain in its lagoon and a handful of big resorts. Here is how they compare on what actually decides it, with official sources for both sides.

01 · The short answer

Choice,
or the view.

The Maldives if you are coming from Europe, the Gulf or Asia, want a wide choice of resorts and prices, or want whale sharks. London has nonstop flights of about 10 h 452, the Gulf hubs are four to five hours away3, and the country had 179 resorts and 956 guesthouses operating in August 202614.

Bora Bora if you are coming from North America, or if the scenery matters as much as the water. Otemanu rises 727 m out of a lagoon ringed by motu5, and no atoll has anything like it. Los Angeles is 8 h 17 from Tahiti nonstop6. The trade-off is less choice and high prices: Bora Bora's hotels averaged 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343, approximate) a room-night in July–September 2025, the highest in French Polynesia7.

From Australia it is close to a draw: Maldivian flies Melbourne–Malé nonstop8, and Air Tahiti Nui is due to start Sydney–Tahiti nonstops on 14 December 20269. Then the calendar decides, because the two have opposite dry seasons.

02 · Side by side

Verdict. The Maldives wins on choice, on access from Europe and Asia, and on whale sharks. Bora Bora wins on scenery, on access from North America, and on having an island to explore between lagoon days. For a honeymoon from the United States or Canada, Bora Bora; from Europe, the Maldives — unless the mountain is the point.

03 · Getting there

It depends where
you start.

From North America, Bora Bora is the shorter trip. Air Tahiti Nui flies Los Angeles–Tahiti nonstop in about 8 h 176; United flies from San Francisco (four a week from late October 2026)35. Seattle lost its nonstop on 31 January 202636. On Tahiti, allow Air Tahiti's 90-minute minimum connection37 and a 50-minute flight to Bora Bora17. The Maldives has no nonstop from any US city1819, so every American itinerary connects through the Gulf, Europe or Asia.

From Europe, the Maldives is far easier. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly London Heathrow–Malé nonstop in about 10 h 452, and Emirates and flydubai reach Malé from Dubai in about 4 h 153. Some direct European flights are seasonal: their share of seats to Malé fell from 12.3% in February to 1.6% in June 2026, while the Gulf hubs' share rose14. Tahiti from Paris is 19 h 54 on Air Tahiti Nui, with a stop in Los Angeles20, plus the island flight: more than a day door to door, and the clocks shift 11 or 12 hours34.

From Australia, Maldivian flies Melbourne–Malé nonstop in about 11 h 358; from elsewhere, Singapore is about 4 h 30 from Malé22. For Tahiti, Air Tahiti Nui flies Auckland–Papeete in 4 h 5521 and is due to open a Sydney nonstop on 14 December 2026, twice a week, leaving Sydney at 20:10 and landing at 06:25 (subject to approval)9.

The last leg is where the Maldives catches people out. Resorts near Malé use speedboats; those further away, seaplanes23, which fly only between sunrise and sunset — Trans Maldivian Airways asks guests to land in the Maldives by 15:30, or spend the night near the airport24. Bora Bora's flights from Tahiti run until about 19:3038, and the resort boats meet them: the Four Seasons is 15 minutes from the airport39, Le Bora Bora 1040.

04 · Cost

Expensive both ways,
for different reasons.

Bora Bora publishes the clearer number. The statistics institute's survey put the island's average room rate at 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343) per night before tax in July–September 20257; overwater bungalows run from about 50,000 XPF (≈ US$490) to well over 200,000 XPF (≈ US$1,960) a night (2026)11. Then come the boats: the St. Regis charges 17,200 XPF (≈ US$169) return for the airport transfer (published rates, October 2026)43, the Conrad 18,000 XPF (≈ US$176) return per adult44, and the Westin folds transfers into a destination fee of 11,550 XPF (≈ US$113) per room per night45.

The Maldives publishes no average room rate — neither the Ministry of Tourism's statistics nor the central bank's database carries one — so any 'Maldives is cheaper' claim is anecdote. What is fixed is the tax. Tourism GST rose to 17% on 1 July 202515. The Green Tax has been US$12 per person per night since 1 January 2025, or US$6 at small hotels and guesthouses on inhabited islands16: for a couple, ≈ 2,450 XPF (US$24) a night, ≈ 17,100 XPF (US$168) a week. Foreign economy passengers also pay a US$50 departure tax and a US$50 airport development fee, ≈ 10,200 XPF (US$100) in all, usually collected in the ticket46. Seaplane transfers are priced by each resort; ask whether yours is included.

Where the Maldives is genuinely cheaper is lower down. Its 956 guesthouses on inhabited islands4 are a real budget option with no equivalent on Bora Bora, which has a few pensions on the main island. The catch is that local islands follow local rules on dress and alcohol (see below).

If the comparison is really about budget, the cheaper French Polynesian answer is not the Maldives but Moorea, whose hotels averaged 60,266 XPF (≈ US$591) a room-night over the same quarter7.

05 · Overwater rooms

Endless choice,
or the view.

Neither side publishes a count of overwater rooms, so ignore anyone who quotes one. What the official figures do show is scale: the Maldives had 179 resorts and 45,115 resort beds operating in August 2026, out of 68,506 tourist beds in all14748. Across that many properties the choice of styles, sizes, islands and prices is in a different league from Bora Bora's.

Bora Bora's case is the view. The big resorts sit on the outer motu facing Otemanu across the lagoon, and the best rooms are priced on it. The supply is small and moves: the Westin opened in September 2024 in the former Le Méridien49, the Conrad reopened on 1 May 2026 after renovation50, and the InterContinental Thalasso closed on 1 June 2026, to return as Regent Bora Bora in late 202751 — ignore sites still selling it. The overwater bungalow itself was invented in French Polynesia.

Wherever you go, the questions are the same: which way the room faces, what is under it (sand, coral or deep water), how far out on the pontoon it sits, and what the boat or seaplane to reach it costs.

06 · Scenery and the lagoon

A mountain,
or the horizon.

Bora Bora is an eroded volcano: the peak survives as Otemanu, 727 m, with Pahia, 661 m, beside it, and the whole island including its motu covers less than 40 km²5. The reef has moved out and the lagoon between has widened into the famous blues. It is the middle chapter of an island's life, and the mountain is what makes the photographs.

The Maldives is all atoll: 1,192 coral islands grouped in 26 atolls, only about 200 of them inhabited, with 298 km² of dry land in about 90,000 km² of territory10. The views are sea, sky and sand, often perfectly — and nothing else.

The practical difference is land. Bora Bora has a main island with 10,758 residents (2022 census)52, a village, a coast road, wartime guns and a summit hike53; you can spend a day ashore. A Maldives resort island is the resort. Some people want exactly that.

Coral is the caveat for both. Reefs across the tropics, French Polynesia's included, were hit by the global bleaching event of 202454; the Maldives' official tourism board reported lower mortality than in 201655. Ask about the house reef before booking anywhere.

07 · Diving and snorkelling

Mantas in both,
whale sharks in one.

Bora Bora's signature dives are the manta rays at Anau, a cleaning station inside the lagoon that the dive centres protect, and the large lemon sharks on the outer slope at Tapu; Muri Muri is the drift dive28. Bora Diving Center at Matira charges 14,900 XPF (≈ US$146) for an introductory dive and 23,000 XPF (≈ US$225) for a two-tank morning, one lagoon and one ocean site (October 2026)56. Every shark species is protected in French Polynesia57. Serious shark divers go on to Fakarava or Rangiroa.

The Maldives has more of the big animals. South Ari Marine Park, 5,610.58 ha, protected since 2009, is known for whale sharks 'throughout the year'29. Hanifaru, in Baa Atoll, protected since 2011, draws dense gatherings of whale sharks and manta rays30; its 2026 visitor-fee season runs from 1 May to 1 December, the months of the wet southwest monsoon3026. The best big-animal months there are not the driest ones.

For snorkelers, both are easy. Bora Bora's lagoon tours stop at ray, shark and coral sites58; in the Maldives, the house reef of your resort island does much of the work.

08 · Seasons

09 · Culture and the rules

Local islands
and resort islands.

In the Maldives, the resort and the country are often separate places. Visitors are asked to dress modestly when visiting or staying on inhabited islands32. Alcohol is sold under licence at tourist resorts and hotels; individuals may not import it, duty-free alcohol bought on the way is confiscated on arrival, and pork also needs prior approval to import3332. None of this touches a resort stay much. It matters if you choose a guesthouse on a local island to save money.

Bora Bora is a French territory with a Polynesian life of its own around the hotels: 10,758 residents52, the craft stalls of Vaitape, marae by the road60, and in July the Heiva, the island's dance and song competitions in Tuvavau square58. Courtesy covers most of it: cover up away from the beach, and don't climb on the marae.

On both, the money goes to the same few places — resorts, boats, flights. The difference is that on Bora Bora the island's own life is a short bike ride from the beach.

10 · Who each suits

Six trips,
six answers.

Honeymoon from North America

Bora Bora. One long-haul flight from Los Angeles6, the view, and an island to explore. Split the stay between an overwater room and a cheaper one to keep the bill sane.

Honeymoon from Europe or Asia

The Maldives, on travel time and choice — unless Otemanu is the reason for the trip, in which case accept more than a day of travel each way.

Whale sharks and big mantas

The Maldives: South Ari's whale sharks year-round29, Hanifaru in season30. Bora Bora's mantas at Anau make a good dive, but not a gathering on that scale.

Restless travellers

Bora Bora, or better still Bora Bora plus another island. There is a hike, a village and a coast road; on a Maldives resort island, the resort usually is the island.

Travelling June to October

Bora Bora: its dry season, against the Maldives' southwest monsoon26.

Travelling January to April

The Maldives: its dry season26, against Bora Bora's wettest months.

11 · Questions

Questions.

  1. 01

Is Bora Bora cheaper than the Maldives?

There is no official way to say: the Maldives publishes no average room rate. Bora Bora's hotels averaged 137,000 XPF (≈ US$1,343) a room-night before tax in July–September 20257. The Maldives adds 17% tourism GST and a US$12 per-person nightly Green Tax1516, but it has far more resorts across a wider range of prices, plus guesthouses.

  2. 02

Which is better for a honeymoon, Bora Bora or the Maldives?

From North America, Bora Bora: shorter flights and the famous view. From Europe or Asia, the Maldives: nonstops from London, Gulf hubs four to five hours away, and far more choice. If the mountain-in-the-lagoon view is the dream, only Bora Bora has it.

  3. 03

Which is easier to get to from the US?

Bora Bora. Air Tahiti Nui flies Los Angeles–Tahiti nonstop in about 8 h 176, then it is 50 minutes to Bora Bora17. No US city has a nonstop to Malé1819, so the Maldives always means at least one connection.

  4. 04

Which is easier to get to from the UK and Europe?

The Maldives. London Heathrow–Malé is nonstop in about 10 h 452; Paris–Tahiti takes 19 h 54 with a stop in Los Angeles20, before the flight to Bora Bora.

  5. 05

When is the best time to go to each?

Bora Bora: July to September for the least rain, May, June and October for the compromise25. The Maldives: January to March, the northeast-monsoon dry season26.

  6. 06

Can you drink alcohol in the Maldives?

At resorts, yes: alcohol is available there. You cannot bring your own, and duty-free alcohol bought on the way is confiscated on arrival3233. Outside resorts and licensed tourist hotels, don't count on it33.

  7. 07

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

A tourist visa is granted on arrival if you have a passport valid for at least a month, a return ticket, a confirmed booking and sufficient funds, and every traveller must submit the free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before arrival4142.

  8. 08

Which has better diving and snorkelling?

For big animals, the Maldives, with whale sharks in South Ari all year29. Bora Bora has mantas at Anau (likely, not promised) and lemon sharks at Tapu28, and a sheltered lagoon that is easy for beginners.
