Plan · Honeymoon · Bora Bora
A Bora Bora
honeymoon.
Four or five nights, a room facing the right way, one good day on the lagoon and a lot of doing very little. Most of the planning is about money and boats.
Otemanu from the outer motu
Bora Bora's hotel stock is built for couples, and it shows: seven properties sell rooms over the lagoon in 2026, and their honeymoon pages read alike. What separates a good trip from an expensive one is less the brand than four decisions — which way the room faces, how many nights it gets, where Bora Bora falls in the itinerary, and what the boats cost. This page plans the trip. The room-by-room comparison is in the best overwater bungalows on Bora Bora, the resort ranking in the best Bora Bora resorts.
01 · The short answer
Last stop,
four or five nights.
Put Bora Bora at the end of the trip, after Moorea or Taha'a, so the most expensive nights are the last ones and the island isn't spent jet-lagged. Four or five nights covers a lagoon day, a dive or a hike, a village morning and two days of nothing; past that the island's size and the nightly rate both start to show.
Choose one motu resort and the room before anything else, and if the budget is finite, spend it on the view rather than the pool: an Otemanu-facing room without a plunge pool usually beats a pool room that faces elsewhere. Then split the stay — two or three nights over the water, the rest in a beach or garden room at the same resort, or in a main-island hotel at Matira.
Book in this order: the room (July and the Christmas weeks go first), the international flights, the Air Tahiti legs, then the one or two boat trips you care about. Everything else can be arranged on the island.
02 · Which resort for which couple
Pick the trait,
then the brand.
- The mountain, framed
- The Four Seasons and the St. Regis face Otemanu from the eastern motu and sell categories named for it: the Four Seasons' Mountain-View and Otemanu suites, the St. Regis's Deluxe and Premier Otemanu villas12.The name is the guarantee
- A private pool
- The Conrad puts a private infinity pool in most of its overwater categories, with Otemanu-view and sunset-view versions3. The Four Seasons has 27 plunge-pool suites; the Westin, 62 rooms with plunge pools45.Reopened May 2026
- Snorkeling off the room
- The St. Regis Lagoonarium is a protected snorkeling area reached from the pontoons; the Four Seasons runs snorkels with a marine biologist in its lagoon sanctuary67.Managed water, not open lagoon
- Fewer extras to add up
- Four Seasons stays include daily breakfast, and its compulsory 10% resort fee covers the airport boat and non-motorised water sports18. The Westin's compulsory 11,550 XPF (≈ US$113, approximate) nightly fee covers the airport transfer and daily transport to the main island5.Compare totals, not rates
- Close to the village
- Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts, on Motu Tevairoa, is ten minutes by boat from the airport and fifteen from Vaitape; its published offers include breakfast for two910.Easiest dinner out
- Over the water, on a budget
- Le Maitai Polynesia, near Matira on the main island, publishes its overwater rates: 122,999–155,650 XPF (≈ US$1,206–1,526, approximate) a night for two at rack rate, late October 2026, with free half board for three nights or more until 31 March 2027111213.Book the offer, not the rack
03 · Which way the room faces
Otemanu
or sunset.
The eastern motu — the Four Seasons, the St. Regis, the Westin — look west across the lagoon to Otemanu, and the sun sets behind the mountain1465. That is the view in the photographs, and the reason those categories cost more. If one view matters, it is this one.
The Conrad, at the south-west end of Motu To'opua, sells Otemanu-view pool villas and a separate group of sunset-view pool villas off a double jetty315. Sunset rooms trade the mountain for the open horizon; some couples prefer it, especially for evenings on the deck. Le Bora Bora on Motu Tevairoa has Otemanu categories too1617.
Within any resort, position matters almost as much as orientation. End-of-pontoon rooms buy privacy and open water at the price of a long walk to breakfast. Ask which pontoon and how far out — the category name tells you the view, not the neighbours.
On the main island, Le Moana on Matira Point and Le Maitai near Matira beach trade the motu view for the freedom to walk to a public beach and to dinner1811.
04 · How long, in what order
A ten-night
honeymoon.
- 01
Tahiti, one night
International flights land at Faa'a, often late. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight19; a night near the airport is the calmer start.
- 02
- 03
Bora Bora, four or five nights
Air Tahiti flies from Tahiti in about 50 minutes and advertises more than ten flights a day to Bora Bora across its network, with direct links from Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Maupiti, Tikehau and Fakarava23. Resort guests are met by their hotel's boat at the airport pontoon24.
- 04
Split the Bora Bora nights
Two or three overwater, the rest in a beach or garden room at the same resort, or in a main-island hotel. Le Bora Bora's 'Islands Dream' offer takes 25% off when combined with another Pearl resort, such as Le Taha'a10.
- 05
Tahiti, one night before flying home
Air Tahiti asks for 120 minutes between a domestic arrival and an international departure19. A cancelled or late inter-island flight on departure day is the one problem money can't fix, so keep the buffer.
05 · When to go
Month by month.
Climate figures are Météo-France normals for Bora Bora's airport, 1991–2020, and sea temperatures are satellite averages2526. Demand follows ISPF's monthly tourist-nights curve: lowest in January, February and November, highest in July27. The cyclone season runs from November to April28.
January
Hot, wet, quiet
About 245 mm of rain, highs near 31 °C, sea about 28.6 °C2526. Showers tend to be short and heavy. One of the quietest months. In 2027, the Four Seasons' main pool, beach bar and Tere Nui restaurant close from 4 January to 24 February for works8.
February
Wet, quiet
About 212 mm of rain and the sea near 29 °C2526. Mid cyclone season; insure for weather disruption.
April
The turn
About 144 mm of rain, sea still about 29 °C2526. The last month of the cyclone season and the start of the shoulder.
May
Dry season starts
Rain falls to about 112 mm, highs about 30 °C25. A strong honeymoon month: dry-season weather before the July rush.
June
Clear and breezy
About 86 mm of rain, nights near 24.5 °C25. Trade winds can chop exposed water; another good bet.
July
Driest and dearest
About 62 mm of rain25, the Heiva, French school holidays, and the busiest month for tourist nights27. Book the room first.
September
Dry, thinning out
About 65 mm of rain, sea about 27 °C2526. Dry-season weather after the French holidays; the best balance.
October
Shoulder
Rain back up to about 109 mm, highs about 30 °C25. Still busy, but the end of the reliable dry spell.
06 · What it costs
The bill,
line by line.
- The room
- The tourist board puts Bora Bora's overwater bungalows at about 50,000 XPF (≈ US$490, approximate) to more than 200,000 XPF (≈ US$1,960) a night in 202630. International hotels averaged about 119,000 XPF (≈ US$1,167) per room sold before tax over 2025 and about 145,000 XPF (≈ US$1,422) in July 2026, all room types2131.Overwater rooms sit above that average
- Published examples
- Le Maitai's overwater rooms: 122,999–155,650 XPF (≈ US$1,206–1,526) for two, rack rate, late October 20261112. The Conrad's booking page: a King Overwater Pool Villa from 232,418 XPF (≈ US$2,279) for 19 October 2026, before tax3. The Four Seasons' booking engine for 15 February 2027: 216,876 XPF (≈ US$2,126) for a Mountain-View suite to 738,024 XPF (≈ US$7,236) for the Otemanu suite with pool, fees included, tax extra8.The others publish no rates
- Getting to the room
- Inside the Four Seasons' 10% resort fee8; inside the Westin's nightly fee5; 18,000 XPF (≈ US$176) return per adult at the Conrad15; 8,600 XPF (≈ US$84) one way at the St. Regis6.Per stay, so it weighs on short stays
- Eating
- Resort restaurants are priced like the rooms. On the main island, La Villa Mahana's set menus are 12,000 and 17,900 XPF (≈ US$118 and 175, approximate) a head in 2026, wine extra32. Half-board offers change the arithmetic where they exist13.Check the last shuttle back
- The lagoon
- One Vaitape operator listed by the tourist board, Hirom, charges 12,000–80,000 XPF (≈ US$118–784) — from a shared half day to a private full day with lunch on a sandbank (2026)33.Private boats for two cost the most
- A dive
- Bora Diving Center at Matira: introductory dive 14,900 XPF (≈ US$146), two-tank morning for certified divers 23,000 XPF (≈ US$225), 2026 prices34.Mantas at Anau are likely, not promised
07 · For two
What to do
between doing nothing.
A private lagoon day
The standard circuit — rays, blacktip sharks, a coral garden, lunch on a motu — is the island's one essential day37. For two, a private boat is the upgrade worth paying for; Moana Adventure Tours, listed open daily through 2026, runs private and small-group trips38.
A sunset sail
Sunset cruises by sailboat or canoe are sold by the resorts and by Vaitape operators; the tourist board notes many serve champagne on board37. Choose the side of the lagoon you don't sleep on.
08 · Honeymoon perks
What the resorts
actually publish.
Less than the rumours suggest. Of the resorts' own sites we checked in October 2026, only Le Maitai's publishes a honeymoon perk with conditions: unspecified gifts for guests on their honeymoon, given on presentation of a marriage certificate or proof of marriage within one year13.
The others publish paid romance instead. The Four Seasons sells in-suite extras to its plunge-pool suites — a bed under the stars, a floating breakfast, champagne and caviar on a tray in the pool4 — and offers a fourth night free on stays of four nights or more until August 202843. Le Bora Bora sells private dinners under its 'Romantic Rendez-vous' heading44. We found no honeymoon package with a stated perk on the St. Regis, Conrad or Westin sites in October 20266455.
Tell the hotel anyway, in writing, when you book, and carry a copy of the marriage certificate. Don't build the trip around an upgrade: the overwater rooms are the ones that sell out first.
09 · What to skip
Six ways to spend
more and enjoy less.
Two motu resorts in one stay. Each move costs a morning, two transfers and a check-in. Split between categories at one resort instead.
Chaining flights on the last day. Keep the buffer night on Tahiti; Air Tahiti's own minimum is two hours between a domestic arrival and an international departure19.
Every night overwater. The novelty of the ladder holds for two or three nights; after that, a beach or garden room at the same resort keeps the lagoon and lowers the bill.
A tour every day. One lagoon day and one other outing are plenty. The point of the room is time in it.
Old listings. The InterContinental Thalasso closed on 1 June 2026 and returns as Regent Bora Bora in late 202746; the Sofitels went into liquidation in 202347; Bloody Mary's was listed as temporarily closed in August 202648. Check that anything you book is open.
Climbing Otemanu. The summit is off limits41. The best seat for it is a deck facing it.
10 · Questions
Questions.
- 01
- 02
How many nights should we spend on Bora Bora?
Four or five, ideally at the end of a ten- to fourteen-night trip that starts on Moorea or Taha'a. Three is the minimum for a lagoon day and a day of rest.
- 03
- 04
How much does a Bora Bora honeymoon cost?
The room dominates: overwater bungalows run from about 50,000 to more than 200,000 XPF (≈ US$490–1,960) a night30. Add transfers, meals at resort prices, one lagoon tour (12,000–80,000 XPF at one listed operator) and city tax3335. See what an overwater bungalow costs.
- 05
- 06
Is an overwater bungalow worth it for a honeymoon?
For two or three nights, for most couples, yes — especially an Otemanu-facing one. For a whole week, a split stay usually gives the same memories for less.
- 07
Can we get married on Bora Bora?
Yes, legally, at the Bora Bora town hall: foreign nationals need no residence in French Polynesia under Article 58 of a 2009 law, but the file must reach the mairie at least 45 days before, with apostilled, translated documents4950. A resort's Polynesian ceremony is symbolic, not legal49. See the honeymoon guide for the basics.
