One island,
two circles.
Tahiti is really two volcanic islands joined by an isthmus: Tahiti Nui, the big circle with Papeete, the airport, and most of the population, and Tahiti Iti, the quieter peninsula that ends at Teahupo'o, where the road stops and the famous wave breaks on the reef. Around 191,800 people lived on the island at the 2022 census — about two-thirds of the whole country.
The interior is the surprise. Mount Orohena, the highest point in French Polynesia, rises to 2,241 m, and deep valleys like Papeno'o cut into the old caldera behind green walls. Most visitors only see the coast road; with a guide or a 4WD tour, the inside of the island is a different country.

Give the island the days most itineraries deny it: a dawn market run, a valley drive, a peninsula afternoon watching Teahupo'o from the channel.
04 / A sensible first visit

- 01Land, then stay a night
Fight the urge to connect straight out. Papeete's market, the waterfront at dusk, and the roulottes reward an easy first evening.
- 02Circle Tahiti Nui
The 114 km coast road fits one unhurried day: Point Venus and Matavai Bay, the east-coast blowholes and waterfalls, the south-coast gardens.
- 03Give the peninsula an afternoon
Drive to the end of the road at Teahupo'o, take a boat into the channel, and understand why surfers speak of this reef in a different voice.
- 04Then go small
Tahiti works best bracketing a trip. Use it to bank supplies, cash, and one great dinner before the atolls and the quiet islands.
