Wave-riding was recorded here by the first European visitors. The 2024 Olympic surfing was held at Teahupo'o. Visiting surfers are guests in a tight line-up culture: wait your turn, greet people, and match the spot to your real ability. Reef passes punish optimism.

01 · The two seasons

South shores,
then north.

From April to October the big southern-hemisphere swells light up the south-facing reefs, Teahupo'o above all. From November to March northern swell reaches the opposite shores: the river-mouth peaks around Papeno'o on Tahiti's north coast are an intermediate playground in that window. In between sit beach breaks and reef shoulders where schools put beginners on their first waves.

Teahupo'o breaks on a shallow reef ledge a few hundred metres offshore from the village at the end of Tahiti Iti's road. On big days it is a spectacle best watched from the channel; on small days it is surfable, by experienced surfers only. Taxi boats run spectators out from the marina for about 3,600 XPF an hour. The wave belongs first to the people who live there.
