Tahiti · Faa'a airport
Faa'a airport,
where every trip begins.
One international airport for the whole country, five kilometres from Papeete. What happens when you land, how to get away, and what to do with the hours before a night flight.

Islands · Tahiti · Faa'a airport
Tahiti-Faa'a (code PPT) is where every international flight to French Polynesia lands1, about 5 km south-west of Papeete2, and where Air Tahiti and Air Moana start their island hops34. It handled 1,147,525 scheduled passengers between January and August 20265. It is compact — easy to understand in ten minutes — and not open around the clock3. This page covers landing, leaving, connecting and waiting; flights to Tahiti are on the getting-there page and island hops on the Air Tahiti page.

Arriving
at Faa'a.
- 01
Passport control
A passport is required, even for passengers arriving from mainland France: French Polynesia is outside the Schengen area, and entry follows the rules for French territory18. Check your nationality's rules before you fly.

Money
Tahiti Exchange, in the middle of the terminal opposite the international arrivals gate, opens 08:00–11:30 on weekdays and for the three hours before each international departure10. Outside those hours, don't count on changing cash on arrival; bring a card.
- 05
04 · Landing late
After dark
at Faa'a.
A late landing changes the arithmetic. Taxis switch to the night rate at 20:00 — 260 XPF a kilometre instead of 16021. The exchange counter will be shut, since it opens only in the weekday morning and before international departures10; L'Aviation, by the arrivals gate, serves until 23:0011. Left luggage runs all night12.
Car-hire desks open 'according to international arrivals'15, which in practice means: confirm with the company that someone will be there for your flight, and what happens if it is late. Don't plan on a bus.
There is nothing to connect to until morning. The first Moorea boats leave Papeete at 05:15 on weekdays and 07:00 at weekends22; on 19 October 2026 the first domestic flight left at 09:1023. Book a bed for the first night and tell the hotel your arrival time — Tahiti Airport Motel is across the road24.
05 · Into town
From the terminal
to Papeete.
Taxi. The rank is in front of Terminal 116. Fares are set by the government and posted in every cab: 1,000 XPF (≈ US$10) pick-up, 160 XPF a kilometre from 06:00 to 20:00 and 260 XPF from 20:00 to 06:00, 100 XPF per bag over 5 kg, 500 XPF for a surfboard, bike, cooler or pushchair, and 2,500 XPF an hour for waiting or crawling traffic21. For the 5 km into central Papeete that comes to roughly 1,800 XPF (≈ US$18) by day or 2,300 XPF (≈ US$23) at night before bags — our arithmetic from the tariff, not a fixed fare. A receipt must be given on request21.
Bus. Tere Tahiti buses stop on the ring road outside the terminal, in both directions16. The airport stop is served by lines 2, 12B, 20, 30, 30A and 30B: 12B runs to the Papeete market, and the 30 group goes the other way, down the coast to Taravao, Tautira and Teahupo'o25. A ride costs 200 XPF (≈ US$2) bought from the driver, 150 XPF prepaid, 1,100 XPF for ten, or 1,200 XPF for a three-day visitor pass26; a prepaid ticket includes two hours of connections, whatever the distance27. Check the first and last buses in the Tere Tahiti app before relying on one after a late landing.
Transfers and rentals. Pre-booked drivers wait in reserved spaces outside16; many hotels arrange transfers. A rental car from the desks inside is the better choice if you are heading round the island rather than into town.
On foot. Only to one place: Tahiti Airport Motel, across the road, which says pedestrian access from the terminal is possible and suggests a taxi if your luggage is heavy24.
06 · Connecting to the islands
Air Tahiti
from the same building.
Air Tahiti operates from the domestic side of the terminal3, where the food court and the McDonald's are11. You collect your international bags, clear formalities, then check in again3.
Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international flight to one of its domestic flights, 120 minutes from a domestic flight to an international one, and 45 minutes between two of its own flights28. Book tighter and the airline reduces or cancels any compensation if you miss the onward flight28. In practice, a long-haul flight that runs a couple of hours late eats a 90-minute connection whole; most travellers sleep on Tahiti and fly on the next day.
Check-in: online or at the five self-service kiosks at Faa'a from 30 hours to 1 hour before departure, or at the desks from 1 hour 30 minutes before29. The airport's own page puts domestic check-in closure at 20–30 minutes before take-off9; don't test it. Kiosks are in the main restaurant area, with drop-off counters for checked bags9.
Domestic flights fill the day. On Monday 19 October 2026, for example, Air Tahiti and Air Moana departures ran from 09:10 to 17:50, to Bora Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, Huahine, Maupiti, Rangiroa, Fakarava, the Australs and the far Tuamotu23.
07 · Coming back from the islands
From a domestic flight
to a long-haul one.
Air Tahiti asks for at least 120 minutes between one of its domestic flights and an international departure28. Treat that as the floor, not the plan: island flights are weather-dependent, and the airline reduces or cancels compensation if a missed connection was booked tighter than its minimum28.
The comfortable version is to fly back to Tahiti the day before, sleep near the airport or in Papeete, and spend the last day on the market, the museum or a beach. With a late-evening departure you can also fly back the same morning, leave the bags at Tahiti Lockers12 and still have the afternoon.
08 · Leaving
The night flight
home.
International check-in opens three to three and a half hours before departure and closes one hour before9. Air Tahiti Nui recommends arriving three hours ahead and opens immigration two hours before departure3.
Long-haul departures bunch at the ends of the day. On 19 October 2026 the international departures board showed Air France to Los Angeles and Paris at 07:40, United to San Francisco at 21:10 and Air Tahiti Nui to Los Angeles at 22:3023. A late-evening flight leaves a whole last day to fill — see the layover ideas below.
Airside, the Columbus Café and the Reva Nui bar-terrace in the international departure lounge open three hours before each international flight11, and there is a children's play area in the same lounge13. The Air Tahiti Nui lounge, on the first floor of the departure lounge, opens three hours before departure for passengers invited by their airline, with a buffet, showers and wi-fi14.
09 · Food on the public side
Eating before
security.
L'Aviation
To the left of the international arrivals gate; daily 04:00–23:00 — the one that's open when long-haul flights land late11.
McDonald's
Near the domestic departure gate; daily 05:00–22:0011.
Vini Vini and Café Maeva
In the domestic food court. Vini Vini: Monday–Saturday 06:00–20:00. Café Maeva: weekdays 06:00–18:00, weekends 06:00–15:0011.
10 · Left luggage
Leaving
your bags.
Tahiti Lockers, opposite the international departure gate, keeps bags 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and also sells luggage and wraps suitcases in plastic (wrapping up to three hours before international flights)12. The airport publishes no prices; email the operator or ask at the counter12.
That makes a long day between a morning arrival and a night departure workable: leave the big bags, take a bus or taxi into Papeete or down the coast, and come back for check-in. Tahiti Airport Motel also lists luggage storage among its services24.
11 · Sleeping near the airport
The night
before.
Tahiti Airport Motel
Across the road from the terminal; walkable with light bags24. 14,900 XPF (≈ US$146) per double or twin room per night, 16,500 XPF (≈ US$162) for the accessible room, 21,600 XPF (≈ US$212) for a family room; breakfast extra (published rates, undated; checked October 2026)24. Nothing to linger for, which is the point.
InterContinental Tahiti
The west-coast resort with overwater bungalows, near the airport. It is renovating in stages through 2026: two buildings closed and no Premium rooms from August to December 2026, so ask which wing you are in32.
Kon Tiki, Papeete
In town, opposite the ferry terminal, with a rooftop bar33. The choice if you want an evening at the food trucks or an early Moorea boat rather than the shortest walk to check-in.
12 · A long layover
Six to twelve
spare hours.
- 01
Papeete market
Open every day; on Sunday it starts around 4 a.m. and the best of it is gone by 734. Bus 12B from the airport stop ends at the market25. See the Papeete guide.
- 02
The museum
Te Fare Iamanaha – Musée de Tahiti et des Îles, at Punaauia on the west coast: Wednesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, 1,000 XPF (≈ US$10), free under 1835. The best use of a daytime layover; closed to individual visitors Monday and Tuesday.
- 03
A swim at PK18
Vaiava beach in Punaauia is the island's white-sand public beach, with parking and showers36. Bring reef shoes.
- 04
The food trucks
The roulottes on Place Vai'ete, on the Papeete waterfront, serve from 18:00 to midnight daily37 — a last dinner before a 21:00 or 22:30 departure, with a taxi back.
- 05
Moorea, if the timing allows
Only with a daytime gap of eight hours or more and bags in storage: the crossing alone is 30–45 minutes each way plus check-in38. Not worth the risk if your flight leaves before the evening. Timetables on the ferry page.
13 · Parking
Dropping off,
picking up.
- P1 Express (612 spaces)
- First 15 minutes free; 320 XPF to 30 minutes, 440 XPF to an hour, 660 XPF to two hours, then 220 XPF an hour; 2,200 XPF a day beyond 24 hoursShort stays and pick-ups7
