Plan · Flights in

Getting to
French Polynesia.

One airport, a short list of airlines, no nonstop from Europe. Who flies to Tahiti in late 2026, how long it takes, and what changed this year.

Matavai Bay, Tahiti, with Moorea across the channel

Plan · Getting there

Every international flight to French Polynesia lands at Faa'a, on Tahiti, 5 km west of Papeete1. Flights arrive from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Auckland, Tokyo, Nouméa and Rarotonga; Paris flights stop in Los Angeles or San Francisco on the way23. Sydney joins the list on 14 December 20264. Bora Bora, Moorea and every other island are a domestic connection from the same airport1. Routes and frequencies below come from airline sites and filed timetables, checked on 19 October 2026.

01 · The short answer

Pick the gateway,
then the airline.

From North America, fly from Los Angeles (Air Tahiti Nui, Air France), San Francisco (United, French bee) or Honolulu (Hawaiian Airlines)56738. The California nonstops take about eight and a half hours57. Everywhere else in the US connects at one of those three airports; flights from the US has the detail.

From Europe there is no nonstop. Air France and Air Tahiti Nui fly Paris–Los Angeles–Papeete and French bee flies Paris Orly–San Francisco–Papeete, about 22 hours from take-off to landing632. The stop is in the US, so US transit paperwork applies even if you never leave the airport9.

From Australia and New Zealand, Auckland has been the hub: Air New Zealand flies it about three times a week and Air Tahiti Nui twice104. Air Tahiti Nui's Sydney nonstop starts on 14 December 2026, twice a week4. From Japan, Air Tahiti Nui flies Tokyo Narita twice a week, with a break in the northern summer11.

03 · The airlines

Who flies
to Tahiti.

Air Tahiti Nui

French Polynesia's international airline — not the domestic Air Tahiti. Los Angeles, Paris via Los Angeles, Tokyo Narita, Auckland and, from 14 December 2026, Sydney, on Boeing 787-9s1842. Since 3 June 2026 one ticket can combine its long-haul flight with an Air Tahiti hop to Bora Bora18.

Air France

Paris Charles de Gaulle–Los Angeles–Papeete on an Airbus A350-900, six or seven a week in its 2026 northern-summer filings6. Delta rebooked its Tahiti passengers onto these flights when it dropped its own route in June 202519.

United

San Francisco–Papeete on a Boeing 787-9: daily from 29 June to 23 October 2026, four a week in the timetable filed for the 2026–27 northern winter7.

French bee

Paris Orly–San Francisco–Papeete on an Airbus A350-900: three a week, five between 27 June and 5 September 20263.

Hawaiian Airlines

Honolulu–Papeete on an Airbus A330-200, twice a week since 24 March 2026, leaving Honolulu on Tuesdays and Saturdays813.

Air New Zealand

Auckland–Papeete, about three a week10. Its filings for 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 raise the season's flights from 65 to 7320.

Aircalin

New Caledonia's airline keeps its Friday Nouméa–Papeete flight for the 2026–27 season, 25 October to 27 March14.

Air Tahiti and Air Rarotonga

The only Cook Islands link: Rarotonga–Papeete, two a week on each airline from March 2026, with a third Air Tahiti flight between 6 July and 3 August 20261516.

04 · What changed

Old itineraries,
new map.

Seattle is gone. Air Tahiti Nui suspended its twice-weekly Seattle nonstop on 31 January 2026 and routes Seattle passengers through Los Angeles17. Guides and fare sites that still show a Seattle–Papeete flight are out of date.

Delta is gone. Its Los Angeles–Papeete flight last operated on 7 June 202519.

More seats from San Francisco and Honolulu. United went daily for the 2026 northern summer, French bee to five a week, Hawaiian from one flight a week to two738.

Sydney returns. Air Tahiti Nui's Papeete–Sydney nonstop starts on Monday 14 December 2026: Mondays and Thursdays from Papeete, Tuesdays and Fridays from Sydney, subject to airport approval4. Until then, Australians connect in Auckland, where Air Tahiti Nui codeshares with Qantas4.

Tokyo pauses in the northern summer. In 2026 Air Tahiti Nui suspended Narita from 11 June to 4 September11.

05 · By market

Where you start
decides the route.

United States and Canada. Three gateways: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu578. Canadians and travellers from the US interior fly to one of them first; Seattle no longer has a nonstop17. The US page compares the five nonstops.

France, the UK and the rest of Europe. Every routing crosses the US: Air France and Air Tahiti Nui via Los Angeles, French bee from Orly via San Francisco, about 22 hours from Paris623. From elsewhere in Europe, connect in Paris or fly to a US gateway and connect there; either way, an ESTA or US visa is needed for the stop9.

Australia and New Zealand. Auckland is a short hop — a little over 5 h 30 — on Air New Zealand or Air Tahiti Nui104. Australians connect there — Air Tahiti Nui codeshares with Qantas — until the Sydney nonstop starts on 14 December 20264.

Japan and Asia. Air Tahiti Nui's Narita flight is the one direct link from Asia we found, leaving Tokyo in the evening and reaching Papeete the same morning, about 10 h 45 later; it paused from 11 June to 4 September 202611. Elsewhere in Asia, the realistic choices are Tokyo, Auckland or a US gateway.

The Pacific. Nouméa on Aircalin, Rarotonga on Air Tahiti or Air Rarotonga, Honolulu on Hawaiian1415168.

06 · Before you book

Transit
and paperwork.

  1. 01

    Check the stopover country

Changing planes in the US means an ESTA or a US visa for anyone who is not a US citizen, even in transit9. That covers every Paris routing.

  2. 02

    Check French Polynesia's own rules

They differ from mainland France's21. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan need no visa for up to three months in six22; EU citizens need none at all23. Everyone else: see entry requirements.

  3. 03

    Check the passport

Non-EU visitors need a passport valid at least three months beyond the day they leave, with two blank pages, issued within the last ten years22.

  4. 04

Leave room for the domestic leg

Air Tahiti asks for 90 minutes from an international arrival to its flight and 120 minutes the other way, and reduces or refuses compensation for a missed flight booked tighter than that12. Air Tahiti Nui now sells through tickets to Bora Bora18.

07 · Arriving

Landing
at Faa'a.

Arrival times are awkward. In the 2026 filings French bee lands at 04:40, Air France at 05:30, United between 18:40 and 20:00 and Hawaiian at about 21:303678. A dawn landing means a long wait for a hotel room; a late one means a night near the airport.

Tahiti is on Hawaii time, three hours behind Los Angeles when California is on daylight saving24. Air Tahiti and Air Moana fly to the other islands from the same airport1; Air Tahiti alone runs more than ten flights a day to Bora Bora25.

The airport guide covers taxis, buses and bag storage; getting around covers the domestic network, ferries and the freighter.
