Air Tahiti,
the island airline.
The turboprops that link Tahiti with 48 islands and Rarotonga. How the network is laid out, what a seat costs in 2026, what you can carry, and how tight a connection it allows.
An island airstrip in the Leeward Islands
Plan · Air Tahiti
Air Tahiti is French Polynesia's domestic airline. It is not Air Tahiti Nui, the international airline that flies you in from Los Angeles, Paris or Tokyo1. Air Tahiti flies ATR turboprops from Faa'a to 48 islands in five archipelagos — Society, Tuamotu, Gambier, Austral and Marquesas — and to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands2. It has been flying between Tahiti and the islands for more than 65 years3, and for most of the islands it is the only scheduled way in. Facts below were checked on its site on 19 October 2026.
01 · Two airlines, one name
Air Tahiti or
Air Tahiti Nui?
Air Tahiti (flight numbers VT) flies inside French Polynesia and to Rarotonga, with ten ATR 72s and two ATR 42s; its subsidiary Air Archipels adds a Twin Otter and three Beechcraft King Air B200s45.
Air Tahiti Nui (TN) is the long-haul airline, on Boeing 787-9s to Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Auckland and, from December 2026, Sydney16. Its flights are covered on the getting there page.
Since 3 June 2026 the two have a codeshare: Air Tahiti Nui sells a single ticket combining its international flight with an Air Tahiti flight from Tahiti to Bora Bora or Rarotonga1. For any other island, you buy the Air Tahiti flight separately — on airtahiti.com, through an agency, or as part of a pass.

03 · How it works
A hub, spokes
and a few shortcuts.
Almost everything starts at Faa'a. The busiest spoke is Bora Bora, with more than ten flights a day2; Bora Bora also has direct flights to Huahine, Raiatea, Maupiti, Moorea, Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava, which is what makes a Leewards-plus-atolls trip possible without doubling back to Tahiti13. Rangiroa and Tikehau are 20 minutes apart25.
The far end of the network runs on a weekly rhythm. The Gambier had two flights a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, in the summer 2026 timetable24; the Tuamotu administration's 2025 sheet for Tikehau counted four or five a week25; Maupiti is not served every day15. On those routes the flight sets your dates, not the hotel.
Air Tahiti changes its timetable twice a year, in April and November26. The summer 2026 timetable ran from 29 March to 24 October 2026; on 19 October the next one had not yet been posted for download26, though flights can be booked on the site. Times are indicative and change without notice26.
Flights to Moorea leave from a separate part of Faa'a airport27. At Bora Bora the airport is on a motu, Motu Mute, and Air Tahiti's free 'Bora Bora Navette' crosses to Vaitape in about 15 minutes; for departures it leaves Vaitape 1 h 30 before the flight13.

06 · On the day
Check-in
and connections.
- 01

From 30 hours to 1 hour before departure, online or at the five self-service kiosks at Faa'a32.
- 02
- 03
Respect the minimum connections
International to Air Tahiti: 90 minutes. Air Tahiti to international: 120. Air Tahiti to Air Tahiti: 45. Boat to plane or plane to boat: 12033.
- 04
Know what a missed connection costs
Air Tahiti reduces or cancels compensation for a missed flight if the booking ignored those minimum times33.
- 05
Pack the cabin bag for a small plane
Everything carried on — bag plus accessories — must fit the one 55 × 35 × 25 cm allowance; an oversized cabin bag is checked 'with limited release' and may cost a fee31.
07 · New in 2026
Signature,
and a rival.
Air Tahiti Signature. From 11 November 2026 Air Tahiti flies an ATR 72 with 26 business-class seats on Papeete–Bora Bora–Raiatea rotations, five a week at first and more from December34. On the fare grid it is the 'Business Signature' column: 64 kg of checked baggage and free changes28.
Air Moana. The competitor on the main routes — Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine, Rangiroa, Tikehau, Fakarava — assigns seats at check-in and serves a drink and snack on flights over 40 minutes7. It is worth pricing both on the trunk routes; for Maupiti, the Australs and the Gambier, Air Tahiti is the airline27.
Passes renamed. Air Tahiti's multi-island passes have new names and fares for trips from 1 April 2026: Maeva, Monoï, Maupiti, Tuamotu, Reva, Fenua, Marquesas and Austral29. The passes page has the rules and prices.
08 · Booking
Booking
in the right order.
Air Tahiti sells single tickets and passes on airtahiti.com, where you can also pay for and manage a booking; the multi-island passes have their own booking page3529. Travel agencies sell both. The airline offers schedule-change alerts by SMS or email — worth switching on, because times are indicative and do move3526.
Book the thin routes first. The Gambier had two flights a week in the summer 2026 timetable and Maupiti is not served daily2415; fix those, then fit Bora Bora and the busy Society Islands routes around them. Our itineraries are built the same way.
On arrival day, leave the first domestic flight at least 90 minutes after your international landing, and on the way home at least 120 minutes before your international departure — longer if the island has one flight a day and weather is doubtful33.
