Moorea · Getting there
The Moorea ferry,
three ways across.
Terevau stopped for good in April 2026. Who still sails from Papeete to Vaiare, what it costs, when the last boat leaves, and how to get from the airport to the quay.
A Moorea ferry leaving Papeete at dawn
Islands · Moorea · Ferry from Tahiti
Three companies now share the crossing from the Papeete ferry terminal to Vaiare on Moorea's east coast: Aremiti, Vaeara'i and Tauati Ferry1. The fast boats take 30 to 45 minutes2; the Vaeara'i takes 50 minutes dock to dock3. A visitor pays 1,100 to 2,350 XPF (≈ US$11–23) one way depending on the company45, cars cross on all three, and on a weekday there are around eighteen departures from Papeete between 05:15 and the early evening. Terevau, which most older guides still list, was liquidated on 13 April 20266. Fares and timetables below were read on the operators' own sites on 19 October 2026; check again before you travel.
01 · The short answer
Which boat
should you take?
Aremiti for choice: it runs two ships, Aremiti 5 and Aremiti 6, and the most departures — nine on a normal weekday from Papeete, six on Saturdays and Sundays5. It is also the dearest for visitors, at 2,350 XPF (≈ US$23) one way for anyone 12 and over5.
Tauati Ferry for price: 1,100 XPF (≈ US$11) one way for everyone from age 2, with no visitor surcharge4. It sails four times a day on weekdays (five on Fridays) and three times at weekends7.
Vaeara'i for a slower, bigger car ferry: five departures each way on weekdays, none on Saturdays in the week we checked, four on Sundays; 1,900 XPF (≈ US$19) for an adult aged 13 or over3.
On foot with a flexible plan, take whichever leaves next; all three use the same terminal in Papeete and the same quay at Vaiare1. Tickets are not interchangeable: each company sells its own, and an Aremiti ticket is valid for 360 days on either Aremiti ship, not on the others5.
02 · The three operators
Who sails,
and how.
Aremiti (Aremiti 5 and 6)
The workhorse of the line, run by SNC Aremiti1. One way from 19 July 2026: visitors 2,350 XPF (≈ US$23) from age 12, visitor children under 12 1,500 XPF (≈ US$15), under-2s free; the resident adult fare is 1,650 XPF5. Round trip for a visitor: 4,700 XPF (≈ US$46)5. Up to two 23 kg bags in the hold and a 10 kg cabin bag are included8. Buy online or at the ticket office.
Tauati Ferry
Run by the Tuatea group, which also operates the Apetahi Express to the Leeward Islands14. One way: 1,100 XPF (≈ US$11) for adults and children from age 2, round trip 2,200 XPF (≈ US$22)4. Timetable in force since 9 February 2026; the company announces technical stops on its site — the next one is Monday 16 November 2026, with no Tauati sailings that day7.
Vaeara'i
A single, larger ship; 50 minutes dock to dock3. One way: adults (13 and over) 1,900 XPF (≈ US$19), children 1,000 XPF (≈ US$10); round trip 3,500 and 1,800 XPF3. Ticket counters at the Papeete ferry terminal and on the Vaiare quay, plus online sales3. Pets may travel between Tahiti and Moorea, but their owners must stay in the ship's outdoor areas9.

05 · Reading the timetable
Times change
week by week.
Aremiti and Vaeara'i publish their timetables a week at a time, and they do shift: school holidays, maintenance and public holidays all move sailings. Tauati publishes a standing timetable and posts its technical stops as separate notices; in October 2026 it ran no crossings at all from Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October7. Check the operator's own page in the week you travel, not a screenshot from a forum.
Two Tauati details catch people out. Its 05:40 Tuesday departure from Papeete and the 10:00 Tuesday return carry only 25 passengers, because the ship carries fuel on that run7. And there is no early Sunday boat back from Moorea on Tauati: the first is at 13:307.
If a sailing is cancelled, don't count on compensation. Aremiti's conditions say timetable changes or cancellations give passengers no right to compensation or refund, though the company may refund tickets for a cancelled crossing8.
06 · Cars, scooters and bikes
Taking a car
across.
All three companies carry cars, and a small car costs 4,000 to 5,440 XPF (≈ US$39–53) one way depending on the company and its length345. Book the car ahead at weekends: Friday evening out of Papeete and Sunday afternoon back are when Tahiti residents travel, and the car deck fills first5.
Aremiti wants drivers at the boarding area at least 30 minutes before departure, and closes vehicle check-in 10 minutes before; the driver must travel with the car, and the dimensions and registration declared at booking must match, or you pay the difference plus fees8.
For a stay of a few days it is usually simpler to cross on foot and rent on Moorea. Rental offices are at the Vaiare quay and the airport2; Avis meets the ferries at Vaiare, is open 06:30–17:00 on weekdays and 07:30–16:00 at weekends, and even with its damage waiver leaves an excess of 103,000–293,000 XPF (≈ US$1,010–2,870)11. If you do want to bring a Tahiti rental across, ask the rental company first whether its contract allows it.
Scooters cost 1,300–1,480 XPF (≈ US$13–15) one way45. A bicycle goes across on Aremiti for 270 XPF5 — the cheapest way to arrive with your own wheels.
07 · Boarding in Papeete
At the
Papeete terminal.
- 01
- 02
Buy the ticket
Online on each operator's site, or at the counters in the terminal. Vaeara'i's Papeete counter opens 05:40–17:00 on weekdays, 07:30–11:30 on Saturdays and 06:20–07:00 and 12:30–18:45 on Sundays3. Foot passengers can usually buy on the day; cars, book.
- 03
- 04
Mind the luggage
Aremiti includes up to two hold bags of 23 kg each (three sides adding up to 200 cm at most) and one 10 kg cabin bag; anything larger must be arranged by email in advance8. Coolers, surfboards and bikes: ask the operator before you turn up.
- 05
08 · Arriving at Vaiare
The quay
on the east coast.
Vaiare is on Moorea's east coast, near the airport at Temae; Temae beach is about 3 km from the quay13. Taxis wait on the quayside, and some hotels run free or paid shuttles to the quay and the airport2. Taxis on Moorea charge the same government tariff as on Tahiti14.
The ray sandbank off Les Tipaniers is in the north-west15 — the far side of the island from the ferry, and the corner where many visitors base themselves. Allow for that drive. The island bus exists, but Tahiti Tourisme itself says it 'isn't particularly efficient'2; don't build a ferry connection around it.
If you are staying more than a day, pick up a rental car at the quay as you land (see above). If you are day-tripping, decide before you go whether you want a car or a tour that collects you from the boat.
09 · From Faa'a airport
Airport
to ferry.
- 01
By taxi
The rank is in front of Terminal 116. Fares are capped by the government: 1,000 XPF (≈ US$10) pick-up, then 160 XPF a kilometre from 06:00 to 20:00 and 260 XPF from 20:00 to 06:00, plus 100 XPF per bag over 5 kg and 500 XPF for a surfboard, bike or other bulky item; slow traffic and waiting run at 2,500 XPF an hour14. The airport is about 5 km south-west of Papeete17, so the meter should read roughly 1,800 XPF (≈ US$18) by day or 2,300 XPF (≈ US$23) at night before bags and traffic — our arithmetic from the tariff, not a fixed fare.
- 02
By bus
Tere Tahiti buses stop on the ring road outside the terminal, in both directions16. Line 12B runs from the airport stop to the Papeete market, close to the ferry terminal; lines 20 and 30 also run into Papeete18. A ride costs 200 XPF (≈ US$2) bought on board, 150 XPF prepaid, or 1,200 XPF for a three-day visitor pass19. Fine with a backpack; awkward with two suitcases.
- 03
- 04
Leave bags if you need to
Tahiti Lockers, opposite the international departure gate, is open 24 hours a day, every day; the airport publishes no price, so ask20. Useful if you are day-tripping to Moorea between flights.
- 05
Or sleep first
After a long-haul night flight, a bed near the airport or in Papeete and the morning boat is the sane plan. Air Tahiti asks 120 minutes between a boat and one of its flights, either way round10; give an international flight more.
10 · Ferry or flight
Fifteen minutes
in the air.
- Time
- Ferry: 30–45 min on the fast boats, 50 min on the Vaeara'i, plus check-in of 30–60 min237
Flight: 15 min, 19 km21 - Price
- Ferry: 1,100–2,350 XPF (≈ US$11–23) one way for a visitor45
Flight: From 16,573 XPF (≈ US$162) round trip on Air Tahiti, of which 6,373 XPF is taxes (October 2026)21 - Frequency
- Ferry: Around eighteen departures each weekday from Papeete across the three companies537
Flight: Air Tahiti and Air Moana; on 19 October 2026 five departures from Faa'a stopped at Moorea first, most continuing to the Leeward Islands2223 - Where you land
- Ferry: Vaiare quay: taxis, rental cars2
Flight: Temae airport in the east: taxis, no shuttle21 - Cars
- Ferry: Yes, from 4,000 XPF one way3
Flight: No - Best for
- Ferry: Almost everyone
Flight: Connecting straight from an international arrival, or routing Moorea into a Leeward Islands air pass
Verdict. Take the ferry unless the flight is already part of an air pass or you are connecting at the airport. The plane saves half an hour on the water and costs several times as much, and you still need a taxi or car at the other end.
