The lagoon

Moorea · Itinerary

Moorea,
day by day.

Three to five nights is the answer for most people. Here is how to spend them — and how to do the island in a single day from Tahiti, if that is all you have.

Islands · Moorea · Itinerary

How many days in Moorea? Three nights at least, five if you can. Tahiti Tourisme suggests three to four days as a minimum1, and that matches the island's shape: one day with a car for the valley, the lookout and the beaches, one morning in the lagoon, one day for a walk or — from July to October — the whales, and a spare for rain, which Moorea gets plenty of: around 2,690 mm a year on the north-west coast2. A day trip from Tahiti works, but it is a sampler. The plans below assume weekday ferries in October 2026; timetables change, so check the week you travel.

02 · Before you plan

Four things
that shape the days.

You need a car for one day. The Belvedere, the marae and the beaches are spread around a 60 km coast road that takes two to three hours to drive without stopping7; the island bus is, in Tahiti Tourisme's words, not particularly efficient8. Avis at the Vaiare quay opens 06:30–17:00 on weekdays and only 07:30–16:00 at weekends, and cars go back during opening hours9 — which matters on a weekend day trip.

Sundays and Mondays are different. The Rotui juice factory and the agricultural school's shop are closed on Sundays; Te Fare Natura is closed on Mondays101112. Weekends bring Tahiti residents to Temae and Ta'ahiamanu6.

Mornings are better. The tour vans reach the Belvedere later in the morning, and fewer boats are on the ray sandbank early. Put the lookout and the lagoon first in the day.

Where you sleep changes the drive. The ferry lands at Vaiare in the east; the ray sandbank, Les Tipaniers and the sunset are in the north-west, off Tiahura13. Base yourself in the north-west for the lagoon and the evenings, around Cook's Bay for restaurants, near Temae for early boats.

03 · A day trip from Tahiti

Moorea
in one day.

  1. 01

    06:10 — the early boat

Take the 06:10 Aremiti from Papeete (or Vaeara'i at the same time; the Tauati leaves at 05:40)354. The fast boats take 30–45 minutes8. Book the car ahead and pick it up at the Vaiare quay as you land; Avis opens at 06:30 on weekdays9.

  2. 02

    08:00 — up the valley

Drive the north coast and up the Opunohu valley to the Belvedere, at about 240 m, before the tour vans15. Walk down through the restored marae on the way back: more than 500 structures were recorded in this valley in 196016. Buy juice or ice cream at the agricultural school's shop, open from 09:00 Monday to Saturday11.

  3. 03

    11:00 — the lagoon

Either a swim and snorkel off the public beach at Ta'ahiamanu17, or a half-day boat trip to the ray sandbank and coral garden — book a four-hour tour in advance, for example Moorea Activities Center's at 10,000 XPF (≈ US$98) per adult (undated price list)18. Don't feed or touch the rays6.

  4. 04

13:00 — lunch on the coast

Roulottes on Moorea charge about 1,500–2,500 XPF (≈ US$15–25) a dish, ordinary restaurants 2,500–6,000 XPF a head (Tahiti Tourisme 2026 guide)19. Lunch-only places stop serving around 14:00–15:0019.

  5. 05

14:30 — Temae, then the quay

Finish at Temae, the long white public beach about 3 km from the ferry quay, with showers20. Return the car before the rental desk closes at 17:009 and take the 17:15 Aremiti back (16:50 on Wednesdays)3.

04 · Two days

One night,
two halves.

  1. 01

Day 1 — valley, lookout, beaches

Morning ferry, car from Vaiare. The Belvedere and the Opunohu marae1516; the pineapple road between the two bays21; the Rotui factory for a free tasting if it's a weekday (09:00–16:00)10. Swim at Ta'ahiamanu, sunset in the north-west, dinner near your hotel.

  2. 02

Day 2 — the lagoon, then home

A morning on the water: a boat tour to the ray sandbank, the coral garden and the underwater tikis off Papetoai13, or a transparent kayak from Tiahura beach at 6,500 XPF (≈ US$64) for 3½ hours22. Afternoon boat back to Papeete; the last Aremiti leaves at 17:15 on most weekdays3.

05 · Three days

The plan
we'd choose.

  1. 01

Day 1 — arrive, beach, sunset

A late-morning boat, the car from the quay, and the drive to the north-west. Swim and snorkel off Les Tipaniers or Tiahura13; watch the sun go down behind the motu. For dinner, Moorea Beach Café in Maharepa is lagoon-front and open daily 11:30–21:30 (2026)23; several restaurants run free pick-ups from nearby hotels, so ask when booking19.

  2. 02

Day 2 — the valley and the bays

Early to the Belvedere15, the marae trail16, the school farm's free discovery trail (1½–2 hours, weekdays 08:00–16:00)24, and the pineapple road21. Afternoon at Temae20, or Magic Mountain above Papetoai, a 3.3 km paved walk to 180 m (200 XPF at the hut, listing of December 2025)25. Lunch at Lilikoi Garden Café at Pihaena, near the Hilton: a garden food truck, Monday–Saturday 11:00–15:00 (2026)26.

  3. 03

    Day 3 — the lagoon

A full lagoon day: Moorea Reo Tours' 09:00–15:00 trip with lunch on a motu costs 15,000 XPF (≈ US$147) per adult, 7,500 XPF per child (2026 listing)27. Or kayak in the morning and dive in the afternoon: Scubapiti's first dive is 10,000 XPF (≈ US$98), equipment included (2026 rates)28. If this is your last day, take a mid-afternoon boat.

06 · Four days

Add a walk
and a spare.

  1. 01

    Days 1–3 — as above

Beach and sunset; the valley and the bays; the lagoon.

  2. 02

    Day 4 — the trails

From the Belvedere: the 1 km E'a Mata Ara path (about 40 minutes, no guide needed), the Col des 3 Pinus (3 km, about 2 hours) or the Three Coconuts Pass (6.5 km, about 4 hours, guide recommended)6. Start early and skip it after heavy rain, when the paths turn to mud. On a wet day, swap in Te Fare Natura (Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–16:00, 2,100 XPF for international adults, 2026)1229.

07 · Five days

Whales, water
and nothing much.

  1. 01

    Days 1–4 — as above

Beach and sunset; the valley; the lagoon; a trail or Te Fare Natura.

  2. 02

Day 5 — whales (July to October) or a second lagoon day

In season, a half-day whale trip: Scubapiti charges 20,000 XPF (≈ US$196) with swimming, 10,000 XPF without, cash only28; licensed tours run 20 July–20 November30. At most seven people in the water per boat, guide included, and no whale watching inside the lagoon30. Out of season: dive, paddle, or drive the quiet east and south coasts to the Afareaitu waterfalls (100 XPF to the landowner)6.

  3. 03

    Evenings

Moorea's nights are short: hotel bars, a dinner show, and the last ferry to Papeete in the early evening3. Tiki Village runs dance shows and a dinner-show; its restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday31.

08 · Without a car

Three days
on foot and by boat.

  1. 01

    Base in the north-west

Sleep around Hauru and Tiahura, where the motu, the ray sandbank, Les Tipaniers, snack bars and boat operators are all within reach1332. A taxi from the Vaiare quay or a hotel shuttle gets you there; some hotels run free or paid shuttles8. Taxis charge the government tariff: 1,000 XPF pick-up plus 160 XPF a kilometre by day33.

  2. 02

Day 1 — the beach and the bank

Snorkel from Tiahura beach; rent a transparent kayak there to reach the sandbank (4,500 XPF for an afternoon's two hours)22.

  3. 03

Day 2 — a tour that drives for you

A quad tour of the valley, the Belvedere and the pineapple fields, with hotel transfers possible depending on where you stay (19,000 XPF per quad for one or two, undated price list)34; or a boat day with lunch on a motu27.

  4. 04

    Day 3 — under water

Scubapiti is at Les Tipaniers: a first dive at 10,000 XPF, a 1½-hour snorkel tour at 5,000 XPF (≈ US$49), 2026 rates28. Bring your own bike over on the Aremiti for 270 XPF and you have wheels for the flat coast road3.

09 · Variations

The same island,
different trips.

With children

Temae and Ta'ahiamanu have parking, toilets and calm water2017; Te Fare Natura is free under 10 and has aquariums2912. Lagoon tours give children under 12 half price at Moorea Activities Center18. Keep the days short and the car handy.

Honeymoon

Three resorts have overwater rooms — the Hilton, the Sofitel Kia Ora and the Manava — at well under Bora Bora's average rates35. Give the lagoon day a private boat instead of a group tour: 69,000 XPF (≈ US$676) for four hours at Moorea Activities Center18.

On a budget

Tauati Ferry at 1,100 XPF one way14, a pension or dorm bed, roulottes at 1,500–2,500 XPF a dish19, and free sights: the Belvedere, the marae, the beaches and the Rotui tastings1510. Spend on one lagoon trip.

Hikers

Four days lets you take the Three Coconuts Pass with a guide on one day and the shorter Belvedere paths on another, with a spare for rain6. Pair Moorea with Tahiti's guided summits.

Divers

The Opunohu canyons, the Tiki and Vaiare are the main sites, with water at 26–29 °C1. Ten dives cost 70,000 XPF at Moorea Blue Diving (2026)36. Air Tahiti publishes a minimum gap between diving and flying; check it before you book the flight out37.

10 · Season by season

Adjusting
for the month.

June–September
Driest months, about 107–139 mm of rain a month at PapetoaiAlso the busiest; book cars and boats ahead2
July–October
Humpback season; build in a whale morningLicensed tours 20 July–20 November630
December–January
Wettest: around 388–417 mm a monthKeep two spare half-days for rain2
Weekends
Tahiti families on the beaches and the car deckFewer Saturday sailings: no Vaeara'i in the week we checked5

11 · Moorea in a longer trip

First stop,
or last.

Because the ferry is cheap and frequent, Moorea fits at either end of a trip. First, to get over the long-haul flight without another plane: a night near the airport or in Papeete, then the morning boat. Last, with a mid-afternoon ferry back the day before your flight home.

Don't chain the last boat of the day to a flight. Air Tahiti's own minimum connection between a boat and one of its flights is 120 minutes37, and an international departure deserves a night on Tahiti.

To carry on to the Leeward Islands without returning to Papeete, fly: Air Tahiti and Air Moana both link Moorea with Bora Bora3839. Multi-island routes are on the itineraries page.

12 · Questions

Questions.

  1. 01

How many days do you need in Moorea?

Three nights at minimum, five if you can: a car day, a lagoon day, a walk or whale trip, and a spare for rain. Tahiti Tourisme suggests at least three to four days1.

  2. 02

Is a day trip to Moorea from Tahiti worth it?

Yes, if it's all you have. Take a boat around 06:00, rent a car at the quay, and be back on the 17:15 (16:50 on Wednesdays)3. You'll see the lookout and one beach or the lagoon, not both properly.

  3. 03

Is 2 days in Moorea enough?

Enough for the valley and one lagoon morning, with no margin for weather. Three is the better minimum.

  4. 04

Do I need a car in Moorea?

For one day, yes; the bus is not a practical way to see the island8. Rent at the Vaiare quay9 and base yourself in the north-west to manage the rest by bike or on foot.

  5. 05

Should I do Moorea before or after Bora Bora?

Either works. Moorea first gets you over the flight without another plane; Moorea last keeps you near the airport. Air Tahiti and Air Moana fly between the two3839.

  6. 06

What's the best day of the week to arrive?

A weekday: more ferries, open shops and tasting rooms, and quieter beaches. The Rotui factory and the school farm shop close on Sundays1011.
