What to do
on Moorea.
A lookout, a valley of marae, a lagoon with rays in it, whales in season and a few good walks. Ranked by what is worth your time, with the prices, the closed days and the rules.
Mount Rotui between Cook's and Opunohu bays, from the Belvedere
Islands · Moorea · Things to do
Moorea's attractions fit around a 60 km coast road that takes two to three hours to drive without stopping1. Most of what follows is free or cheap, needs a car for one day and a boat or kayak for another, and is spoilt more by rain than by crowds: December and January bring around 400 mm of rain a month on the north-west coast, June to September 107–139 mm2. Humpback whales are a July-to-October bonus3. Two things are worth knowing before you plan: the pineapple-juice factory and the agricultural school's shop are shut on Sundays45, and Te Fare Natura on Mondays6.
01 · How we ranked it
Worth the time,
in that order.
The order is editorial, independent and unpaid: no operator here has paid to be listed, and none knows it is. We ranked on four things — whether the experience is particular to Moorea, what it costs against what you get, how easy it is to do on your own, and how badly weather or crowds can spoil it. Prices are those published by each operator, read in October 2026; where an operator's page carries no date, we say so.
We only name businesses we could confirm are operating in 2026, from their own site or an official listing. Several places that still appear on maps and in older guides are not here, for reasons given further down.
Moorea has limits, and they shape the list. The lagoon is narrower than Bora Bora's, the famous ray site is busy, and the island is a commuter suburb of Tahiti at weekends. What it does better than most islands is land: a road up a valley of restored marae to a lookout, and trails that start from it.
02 · The list
Thirteen things,
ranked.
- 01
The Belvedere and the Opunohu marae
The road up the Opunohu valley ends at the Belvedere, a lookout at about 240 m with a car park and picnic area, where Cook's and Opunohu bays open on either side of Mount Rotui7. On the way up, stop at the marae in the forest. In 1960 the archaeologist R. C. Green recorded more than 500 structures in this valley, including three archery platforms; the main sites were restored in 1969 under Y. H. Sinoto of the Bishop Museum8. Ahu-o-Mahine, with its two backrests and ten upright stones, was probably the last marae built in the valley; Tetiiroa was occupied from the late 16th century8. Free. Go before nine, before the tour vans, and climb on nothing.
- 02
A morning in the lagoon
The sandbank where stingrays and blacktip reef sharks gather lies between Tiahura and Papetoai, off Les Tipaniers — too far to swim, so go by kayak or boat910. Most tours add the coral garden and the underwater tikis sunk off Papetoai in 1998 by the artist Tihoti Guy10. Moorea Activities Center runs four-hour group tours at 10,000 XPF (≈ US$98), half price under 12, 12 people at most (undated price list, checked October 2026)11; Moorea Reo Tours runs a 09:00–15:00 day with lunch on a motu for 15,000 XPF (≈ US$147), 7,500 XPF for children, or a half-day snorkel for 10,000 XPF (2026 listing)12. Or paddle yourself: Moorea Blue Paddle rents transparent kayaks from Tiahura beach at 6,500 XPF (≈ US$64) for a 3½-hour morning or 4,500 XPF for two hours in the afternoon13. Read the note on feeding below before you book.
- 03
Humpback whales, July to October
Humpbacks spend the southern winter outside the reef; the 2026 government brief gives July to the end of October, and licences for whale-watching boats run from 20 July to 20 November314. Scubapiti, at Les Tipaniers, charges 20,000 XPF (≈ US$196) for a half day with swimming and 10,000 XPF (≈ US$98) without, cash only (2026 rates)15; Moorea Activities Center's four-hour whale trip is 16,000 XPF (≈ US$157), swimmers 12 and over (undated)11; Mori Ora takes eight aboard at most, six in the water16. Sightings are likely in season, not guaranteed. The rules are below; a boat that chases or crowds a whale is breaking them. More in our whale guide.
- 04
The trails from the Belvedere
Three marked paths start at the lookout, on public land: E'a Mata Ara, 1 km and about 40 minutes, fine without a guide; the Col des 3 Pinus, 3 km and about two hours; and the Col des 3 Cocotiers (Three Coconuts Pass), 6.5 km and about four hours, where a guide is recommended3. Tahiti Tourisme rates the Three Coconuts route moderately difficult, past a waterfall to a view of Rotui and both bays17. All of them turn to mud after rain. See also hiking in French Polynesia.
- 05
Temae and Ta'ahiamanu beaches
The two big public beaches. Temae, about 3 km from the ferry quay near the airport, is the long white one, with showers, toilets and parking18. Ta'ahiamanu, at the mouth of Opunohu Bay (once called Mareto), is calmer, with toilets and a car park19; it is very popular at weekends and has a fitness trail behind the car park3. Free.
- 06
The pineapple road, the school farm and the juice factory
An unpaved track through the pineapple plantations links Cook's and Opunohu bays, on foot, by bike or by quad; free20. The Opunohu agricultural school sells its juices, jams, milkshakes and Moorea ice cream at the Fare Vente, Monday–Saturday 09:00–16:00, and its 20-hectare farm has a free self-guided discovery trail of 1½–2 hours (weekdays 08:00–16:00, Saturdays to 12:15)521. The pineapples go to the Rotui factory at the foot of the mountain20, which offers free visits and tastings without booking, Monday–Friday 09:00–16:00; the shop also opens Saturdays 09:00–15:304.
- 07
Magic Mountain
A paved 3.3 km round trip from Papetoai up to 180 m, with a view over Opunohu Bay and the north-west lagoon. It crosses private land: Tahiti Tourisme lists a 200 XPF (≈ US$2) fee at the hut (listing updated December 2025)22; the 2026 boaters' brief says to pay at the Fare Tutava shop3. Thirty sweaty minutes up; ATV tours drive it.
- 08
Diving
Tahiti Tourisme names the Opunohu canyons, the Tiki and Vaiare as the main sites, with water at 26–29 °C and visibility often over 30 m23. Scubapiti, at Les Tipaniers, charges 10,000 XPF (≈ US$98) for a first dive and 28,800 XPF (≈ US$282) for four fun dives, equipment included (valid all 2026)15. Moorea Blue Diving, at the Manava resort, charges 9,000 XPF (≈ US$88) a dive and 10,000 XPF for a first dive; its shop opens daily 07:00–16:30 (2026)24. More in diving.
- 09
Te Fare Natura
An eco-museum on Polynesian nature and science at the entrance to Opunohu Bay, with aquariums. Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–16:00, last entry 15:00, closed Mondays6. Adults 2,100 XPF (≈ US$21) for international visitors, 1,600 XPF for residents and mainland French, 500 XPF for 11–17s and students, free under 10 (2026 rates)25. A free 45-minute guided visit is included; allow about 1½ hours6. The best rainy morning on the island.
- 10
Round the island
The coast road is about 60 km and takes two to three hours without stops1. Do it clockwise or anti-clockwise, but do it on a weekday: weekends bring Tahiti's families across. Buy pineapples at the roadside stalls; stop at Temae, Ta'ahiamanu and Tiahura to swim.
- 11
A quad tour of the valley
Moorea Activities Center runs 2½-hour tours of the valley, the Belvedere, the pineapple fields and the school farm at 19,000 XPF (≈ US$186) per quad for one or two people, or 3½ hours adding Magic Mountain at 23,000 XPF (≈ US$225) (undated price list, checked October 2026). Drivers need a car licence; passengers from age 526. The tasting stops are closed on Saturday afternoons and Sundays27. Fun, noisy, and the same places you can reach by rental car.
- 12
The Afareaitu waterfalls
On the quieter east coast, the Vaioro and Afareaitu waterfalls, inland from Afareaitu, the administrative village. The path crosses private land: the 2026 boaters' brief says to pay 100 XPF (≈ US$1) to the landowner3. Best after rain, which on Moorea is rarely far off.
- 13
An evening at Tiki Village
A cultural centre in the west with dance shows and a dinner-show option; its restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday28. No prices are published online, so ask when booking. A fair choice for the one evening of dance on an island with little nightlife.
03 · The rays and the sharks
Please don't
feed them.
The sandbank between Tiahura and Papetoai is Moorea's best-known half hour and its most argued-over9. The lagoon is managed under a marine-space management plan, the PGEM, first adopted in 2004 and revised in 2021; its map marks the ray and shark observation sites, the underwater sculptures, and a 70 m coastal strip where boats must slow to 5 knots3.
Feeding is the problem. Feeding wild animals has been banned under French Polynesia's environment code since 2017, with ray feeding tolerated only at sites designated by the PGEM29; when the revised plan was approved in September 2021, the government summarised it as 'feeding of species is forbidden, except by derogation'30. The government's 2026 brief for visiting boats is blunter: no feeding of fish — sharks, rays, moray eels — and shark feeding is forbidden3.
It is not a theoretical concern. In May 2025 a visitor was bitten by at least two blacktip reef sharks on the Tiahura sandbank and needed 38 stitches; the press report noted that the shark-feeding ban is not always respected, that the 2024 lagoon-management report described the lagoon as partly saturated, and that the commune was considering limiting the number of operators on the sandbank31.
What that means in practice: ask the operator before you book whether they feed the animals, and choose one that says no. Go early, when fewer boats are on the bank. Don't touch, chase or hold the rays, keep your feet off the coral, and leave the sharks alone; they are small and usually shy, until food is in the water.

05 · Not on the list
Closed, unconfirmed
or left out.
The Lagoonarium on Motu Ahi closed in May 2021; its operators were later fined over a 2019 shark bite29. It still appears on some maps.
The InterContinental Moorea closed for good in 202032. A captive-dolphin programme operates on part of its former site; we could not confirm its 2026 programme from the operator itself, and don't list it.
Mount Rotui (899 m) is the island's most dramatic ridge walk and Tahiti Tourisme calls it difficult1. It is steep and exposed: go only with a local guide, in dry weather, and only if you are a confident hiker.
Glass-bottom boats, a second quad operator, and several smaller boat companies are left out because we could not confirm they were operating in 2026.

- 04
Do I need a guide for the Three Coconuts trail?
The 2026 government brief recommends one for the 6.5 km, four-hour route; the 1 km E'a Mata Ara path is fine without3.
- 05
- 06
- 07
Can I snorkel from the beach?
Yes, at Les Tipaniers and Tiahura in the north-west, but the ray sandbank itself is too far to swim — take a kayak or a boat10.
- 08
How many days do I need?
Three to five nights covers the list with a spare day for rain; the itinerary page has day-by-day plans.
