Where to stay
in Moorea.

Moorea is a ring road with a hotel every few kilometres. The stretch you choose decides your beach, your run to the ferry and how often you drive.

Les Tipaniers, Tiahura

Stay · Moorea

Moorea's hotels and pensions are strung along one coast road. The east coast, by the ferry quay and the airport, is the quickest to reach. The north-west, around Tiahura, has the motu, the rays and the sunsets. Haapiti, in the west, is where most of the family guesthouses are. This page goes coast by coast; the ranking compares the hotels themselves.

01 · The short answer

North-west for the water,
east for the ferry.

A first visit, a few nights, little driving: Tiahura and Hauru on the north-west coast. The ray area and the two motu are just offshore,1 the hotels are on the sand, and snack bars and boat operators are within walking distance.

An overwater room: there are three, at the Hilton on the point at Papetoai, the Sofitel Kia Ora on Temae and Manava in Maharepa.234

An early ferry, a short stay or a day on Tahiti: the east coast, minutes from the Vaiare quay and the airport.34

A long stay on a small budget: a pension in Haapiti, with a car or a bike, since most meals are a drive away.

02 · The coasts

Five stretches
of coast road.

Temae, Vaiare and the east

The airport, the ferry quay, Temae beach and the Sofitel Kia Ora, a few minutes from both.3 Closest to Tahiti in every sense. Further south, Afareaitu is the administrative seat, with little for visitors. Best for short stays, early boats and beach days.

Maharepa and Cook's Bay

The island's busiest stretch: supermarkets, most of the independent restaurants, Manava Beach Resort and Hotel Kaveka, with its overwater restaurant on the bay.46 Mount Rotui fills the view. Practical rather than beachy, and central.

Papetoai and Opunohu Bay

The Hilton on the point,2 the public beach at Ta'ahiamanu, and the valley road up to the marae and the Belvedere. Les Tipaniers' annex, Tipaniers Iti, sits at the mouth of the bay.7 Quiet in the evenings.

Hauru and Tiahura

The north-west corner: Les Tipaniers, 25 km from the airport and 30 km from the quay,7 Fenua Mata'i'oa's garden suites,8 and the motu and ray area offshore.1 Pension Motu Iti is on the sea at Pihaena, 500 m before the Hilton.9 The most self-contained base without a car.

Haapiti and the west

Long, residential and green, with family pensions spread along the road; Tahiti Tourisme lists a dozen guesthouses, most of them here.10 Fare Arana mixes bungalows, rooms and a six-bed dorm.11 The surf break is offshore. You will drive for most meals.

03 · East or north-west?

The two
main choices.

Ferry and airport
East (Temae to Cook's Bay): A few minutes away.34
North-west (Papetoai to Tiahura): About 30 km from the Vaiare quay.7
Beach
East (Temae to Cook's Bay): Temae, the island's long white-sand beach, in front of the Sofitel.3
North-west (Papetoai to Tiahura): Sandy beaches at Tiahura with the motu offshore.12
In the water
East (Temae to Cook's Bay): Temae, which the Sofitel describes as a marine reserve.3
North-west (Papetoai to Tiahura): The ray area opposite Les Tipaniers.1
Eating and errands
East (Temae to Cook's Bay): Supermarkets and most independent restaurants, around Maharepa and Cook's Bay.
North-west (Papetoai to Tiahura): Snack bars and a few restaurants within walking distance of the hotels; eight within five minutes of the Moorea Island Beach Hotel.13
Hotels
East (Temae to Cook's Bay): Sofitel Kia Ora, Manava, Hotel Kaveka.
North-west (Papetoai to Tiahura): Hilton, Les Tipaniers, Fenua Mata'i'oa, Moorea Island Beach Hotel.

Verdict. The north-west for most stays longer than two nights: the water is the reason to come, and it is best there. The east for a short stay or when the ferry timetable matters more than the sunset.

04 · By kind of stay

From overwater
to a dorm bed.

Resorts with overwater rooms
Hilton (104 bungalows),2 Sofitel Kia Ora (109 villas, 38 over the water)3 and Manava. For one night, 19–20 October 2026, overwater rooms started at 147,486 XPF (≈ US$1,450) at the Hilton14 and at €598 (≈ 71,400 XPF, ≈ US$700) at Manava.415Ranked in the best Moorea resorts
Small hotels
Les Tipaniers, a two-star with a kitchenette in every room;12 Hotel Kaveka, whose rates include taxes;6 Fenua Mata'i'oa;8 and the Moorea Island Beach Hotel, with 20 m² bungalows and a guest kitchen.13
Pensions
Pension Motu Iti has three beachfront and two garden bungalows at ≈ 10,500–12,000 XPF (≈ US$103–118) a night for one or two, tax included, with a two-night minimum (listing updated November 2025).9How pensions work: the pensions guide
Dorm beds
Pension Motu Iti's 15-bed dormitory is ≈ 2,650 XPF (≈ US$26) a night with breakfast;9 Fare Arana has six dorm beds.11
Families
Hotel Kaveka lets children under 10 sharing with their parents stay free;6 Les Tipaniers' kitchenettes save on meals.12See with children
The island average
Moorea's hotels averaged ≈ 60,300 XPF (≈ US$590) per room-night before tax in July–September 2025, at 84.4% occupancy, the highest of any island.16Under half the Bora Bora average

05 · Which room

Overwater, beach
or garden pool?

Moorea's resorts sell three kinds of room, and the gap between them is large. On the same October 2026 night the Hilton's garden bungalows with a private pool started at 91,180 XPF (≈ US$895) against 147,486 XPF (≈ US$1,450) over the water, about 38% less.14 At Manava the garden pool bungalow started at €413 (≈ 49,300 XPF, ≈ US$483) and the overwater one at €598 (≈ 71,400 XPF, ≈ US$700).415

The overwater room buys the deck, the ladder into the lagoon and, at the Hilton, a glass floor panel over the reef.14 The garden pool bungalow buys privacy and a pool of your own. The beach bungalow, where there is one, puts the sand at the door; on Temae that is the point of the Sofitel.3

A common split is two nights over the water and the rest on land, or the whole stay in a small hotel at Tiahura and a day on a motu by boat. The choice of room is set out in more detail in the overwater guide.

06 · A day from each base

What's on
the doorstep.

From Tiahura and Hauru, the lagoon is the day: kayak or paddle to the motu, snorkel the ray area opposite Les Tipaniers,1 and stay on the beach for the sunset. Most of the lagoon boat operators work from this stretch.

From Papetoai and Cook's Bay, the island's interior is closest: the Opunohu valley, the marae and the road up to the Belvedere lookout, then lunch at one of the restaurants around the bay. The Hilton and Hotel Kaveka are the bases here.

From Temae and Maharepa, it is the beach in front of the Sofitel, the shops of Maharepa, and the ferry: Papeete's market is close enough for a morning. Manava runs its own dive club on site.17

From Haapiti, it is the quiet: the long west coast, the surf break offshore, and a drive to wherever dinner is.

07 · Eating near your bed

Where dinner is,
and what it costs.

Moorea's independent restaurants are thickest around Maharepa and Cook's Bay and in Hauru and Tiahura; the resorts each have one or two of their own. Tahiti Tourisme's 2026 price guide puts a food-truck dish at 1,500–2,500 XPF (≈ US$15–25), an ordinary restaurant or pizzeria at 2,500–6,000 XPF (≈ US$25–59) a head, and hotel fine dining above 8,000 XPF (≈ US$78).18

Several restaurants collect diners from nearby hotels; ask when you book. Many close one or two days a week, and lunch-only places stop serving in mid-afternoon.18 If you stay in Haapiti, dinner is a drive; at Tiahura or in Cook's Bay it can be a walk.

Two hotels change the arithmetic. Les Tipaniers puts a kitchenette in every room,12 and the Moorea Island Beach Hotel serves no lunch or dinner but has a guest kitchen and eight restaurants within five minutes' walk.13 Kaveka and Manava sell meal plans and half board.64

08 · From Papeete to your bed

Arriving,
step by step.

  1. 01

    Take the ferry

Three companies sail from the Papeete ferry terminal to Vaiare. One way, Tauati Ferry is 1,100 XPF (≈ US$11),5 Vaeara'i 1,900 XPF (≈ US$19), 50 minutes dock to dock,19 and Aremiti 2,350 XPF (≈ US$23) for a visitor.20 Book a car slot ahead at weekends.

  2. 02

    Or fly

Air Tahiti's flight takes 15 minutes; the lowest round trip on its site was 16,573 XPF (≈ US$162) in October 2026.21 The airport is at Temae, and there is no airport shuttle.22

  3. 03

    Pick up a car

Rental desks are at the airport and the Vaiare quay. Taxis wait at both, and some hotels run free or paid shuttles: ask when you book.22

  4. 04

    Or take the bus

A public bus meets the ferries and runs to the north-west hotels,7 but Tahiti Tourisme's own verdict is that it isn't particularly efficient.22

  5. 05

    Budget the taxi

From the ferry to Haapiti a taxi was about 5,000 XPF (≈ US$49) in March 2023, the last figure published.13 Fares are set by government order; confirm before you set off.23

10 · Timing and status

When to book,
and what's changed.

Moorea fills up. Its hotels ran at 84.4% occupancy in July–September 2025, the highest of any island.16 June to September are the driest months on the north-west coast, about 107–139 mm of rain a month; December and January are the wettest, around 388–417 mm.25 Book July and August early.

The InterContinental Moorea closed for good in 2020.26 The Sofitel Kia Ora reopened in April 2026 after a renovation, with the last rooms due back on 1 November 2026,27 although Tahiti Tourisme's listing still read temporarily closed in October.28 The Terevau ferry was liquidated on 13 April 2026;29 guides that still list it are out of date.

11 · Questions

Questions.

  1. 01

What is the best area to stay in Moorea?

For most stays, the north-west around Tiahura and Hauru: the hotels are on the sand and the ray area and motu are just offshore.1 For a short stay or an early ferry, the east coast near Temae and Maharepa.34

  2. 02

Where can I stay in Moorea without a car?

Tiahura. Les Tipaniers is on the beach with the ray area opposite, a public bus meets the ferries, and snack bars are within walking distance.71 You will still want a car for one day, for the Belvedere and the marae.

  3. 03

Which Moorea hotels have overwater bungalows?

Three: the Hilton at Papetoai, the Sofitel Kia Ora at Temae and Manava in Maharepa.234 The InterContinental, once the fourth, closed in 2020.26

  4. 04

Where should I stay in Moorea on a budget?

A pension. Pension Motu Iti lists bungalows at ≈ 10,500–12,000 XPF (≈ US$103–118) a night for one or two and dorm beds at ≈ 2,650 XPF (≈ US$26) with breakfast.9 Take the ferry rather than the plane.

  5. 05

    Where should families stay?

Somewhere with a kitchen or a free child rate: Les Tipaniers has kitchenettes in every room,12 and Hotel Kaveka lets children under 10 sharing with their parents stay free.6

  6. 06

Can I stay on Moorea the night before my international flight?

It can work with an early ferry, but leave a wide margin: a cancelled sailing or a slow crossing leaves no slack. A last night near the airport on Tahiti is the safer plan; see where to stay in Tahiti.

  7. 07

How many nights should I spend on Moorea?

Enough for a lagoon day, a day inland at the Belvedere and the marae, and a spare for rain. Because the ferry is cheap and frequent, Moorea also works at either end of a trip: first, to get over the flight without another plane, or last, before a night near the airport on Tahiti.

  8. 08

Which hotels are closest to the ferry?

The Sofitel Kia Ora and Manava, a few minutes from the Vaiare quay;34 Hotel Kaveka in Cook's Bay is a little further. The north-west hotels are about 30 km away.7

  9. 09

Is the Sofitel Kia Ora open?

Yes. It reopened in April 2026; some bungalows stay closed until 31 October and the full inventory returns on 1 November 2026.27
