Where to stay

Most visitors spend a night or two here between flights. Where to spend them, and where to go if you stay longer.

Stay · Tahiti
This page covers the island of Tahiti only; for French Polynesia as a whole, start at where to stay. Every international flight lands at Faa'a, 5 km west of Papeete,1 and most trips spend at least one night on Tahiti: after a long-haul arrival, before an early inter-island flight, or as a buffer before the flight home. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way.2
01 · The short answer
One night by the airport,
or longer down the coast.
One night between flights: Faa'a. Tahiti Airport Motel is across the road from the terminal,3 the Hilton is beside the lagoon a few minutes away,4 and the InterContinental is 2 km from the airport.5
A night in town, or an early Moorea ferry: Papeete. The Kon Tiki faces the ferry terminal,6 and the market, the waterfront food trucks and the bars are within walking distance.
Two or three nights to see the island: the west coast at Punaauia, where Tahiti Lagoon Resort reopened in March 2026,7 or the north coast around Matavai Bay, with a car for the waterfalls and the coast road.
Surf, boats and quiet: Tahiti Iti, the peninsula, where pensions such as Vanira Lodge at Teahupo'o take over from hotels.8
02 · The areas
Six places
to sleep.
Punaauia and the west coast
South of the airport strip: Tahiti Lagoon Resort, the white-sand beach at PK18 and the museum. Sunsets over Moorea and the island's heaviest traffic.11
Paea, Papara and the south-west
A rural coast with the Taharu'u surf beach and the marae at Paea. Few hotels; guesthouses and furnished rentals, which make up most of Tahiti Tourisme's 186 listings for the island.14
Tahiti Iti
The peninsula beyond the Taravao isthmus: villages, pensions and the road's end at Teahupo'o. Vanira Lodge has traditional-style bungalows at PK 15.6, rates on request.8 A long drive from the airport, which is the point.

07 · Staying longer
What each base
puts within reach.
From Punaauia and the west coast: Te Fare Iamanaha, the country's main museum, at Nu'uroa Point, open to the public Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, for 1,000 XPF (≈ US$10), free under 18;23 and Vaiava, the PK18 beach, which Tahiti Tourisme rates the island's best white sand, with parking and showers.24 Go to the museum before the outer islands, not after.
From Papeete: the market, open every day, which starts around 4 a.m. on Sundays,25 the waterfront food trucks in the evening, and the ferries to Moorea.
From the north coast: Point Venus and the black sand of Matavai Bay, and the three Faarumai waterfalls at Tiarei, free and open daily; the first, Vaimahuta, is 80 m high and a few minutes from the car park.26
From Tahiti Iti: Teahupo'o, where the road ends at PK 0 and the reef wave hosted the Paris 2024 Olympic surfing; it is for experts, and everyone else watches from a boat in the channel.27 To learn to surf, Taharu'u at Papara is one of the island's best beginner beaches.28

09 · Timing
When it rains,
and when it fills.
Faa'a is driest from June to September, with about 41–75 mm of rain a month, and wettest in December and January, around 268–279 mm.29 Rain matters less here than on the outer islands: you are probably only passing through, and the museum and the market work in any weather.
Book Tahiti's hotels for the nights your flights dictate, not the ones you'd choose: an arrival before dawn needs the room from the night before, or a guaranteed early check-in. Hotels near the airport are the ones to book first for July, the busiest month of the year for visitors.30
10 · Status changes
What has changed
in 2026.
Tahiti Lagoon Resort opened on 1 March 2026 in the former Le Méridien at Punaauia, after six years closed.7 If an old guide sends you to the Méridien, this is where it means.
The InterContinental stays open while it renovates in stages: Buildings 7 and 8 closed, and no Premium rooms from August to December 2026.16 Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort changed management on 1 April 202618 and is now listed as Le Tahiti by Pearl Resorts.13
Te Moana Tahiti Resort in Punaauia was shown as temporarily closed on Tahiti Tourisme's listing in October 2026,31 while its own website was still taking bookings.32 We have left it out of the recommendations above until the two agree; confirm with the hotel before booking.
11 · Questions
Questions.
- 01
- 02
Is it worth staying on Tahiti, or should I connect straight on?
Stay at least a night. Long-haul arrivals often land late or before dawn, Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes, and a night here protects the connection.2 Tahiti also has the museum, the market and the food the outer islands lack.
- 03
Can I walk from the airport to a hotel?
Yes, to Tahiti Airport Motel, across the road from the terminal.3
- 04
- 05
Where should I stay for an early Moorea ferry?
In Papeete, ideally at the Kon Tiki, which faces the ferry terminal.6
- 06
Where should I stay to surf or watch Teahupo'o?
On Tahiti Iti, in a pension near the road's end; Vanira Lodge is at PK 15.6 in Teahupo'o.8 For beginner surf, the south-west coast around Taharu'u is closer.
- 07
Is the Le Méridien Tahiti open?
Not under that name. The hotel at Punaauia reopened as Tahiti Lagoon Resort on 1 March 2026.7
- 08
Do I need a car on Tahiti?
Not for a night at Faa'a or in Papeete. For the coast road, the waterfalls or Tahiti Iti, yes: a day or two of rental.1
