Plan · Money
Paradise,
priced honestly.
Where the money actually goes, which costs are negotiable, and how travelers run the same islands on very different budgets.
01 / The shape of spending
Rooms lead,
logistics follow.
The currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro at a fixed rate, and the cost structure is simple to state: accommodation dominates, inter-island transport comes second, and food lands wherever you let it. Tipping is not customary. Cards work widely on the main islands; the atolls and Australs still run substantially on cash.
The good news is spread: the same trip exists at several prices. A pension circuit through the Leewards with an air pass is a different budget universe from a motu-resort fortnight — and neither is the 'wrong' French Polynesia.
02 / Directional ranges
Know the bands
before you book.
Roughly 10,000–25,000 XPF (~$100–250) per double, often with breakfast or half-board
The islands' backboneRoughly 25,000–45,000 XPF (~$250–450) per night
Moorea and main islandsCommonly 70,000–150,000+ XPF (~$700–1,500+) per night before extras
Season moves this mostRoulotte or snack plate ~1,200–2,000 XPF; resort dinners several times that
Half-board tames itRoute-dependent; multi-island passes usually beat two single fares
Price passes firstTwo-tank dive ~15,000–20,000 XPF; lagoon tours and whale trips ~8,000–18,000 XPF
Book direct where you can03 / Levers that work
Spend where
it counts.
- 01Mix your stays
Three resort nights inside a pension trip buys the postcard and keeps the total sane.
- 02Let half-board work
On atolls and small islands, pension meals beat scarce restaurants on both price and company.
- 03Time the shoulders
April–May and September–October keep dry-season weather at friendlier rates.
- 04Fly on a pass, shop at markets, share boats
The classic trio that cuts hundreds of dollars without cutting experience.

Perspective
The best hours
are free.
Lagoon dawns, public beaches, village errands, reef edges at low tide — the country's signature experiences mostly cost patience. Budget for the icons, then protect empty days.
