Islands · Bora Bora · Itinerary

Bora Bora rewards a short, planned stay more than a long, loose one. The main road is about 32 km1 and the best of the island is on the water, so the days are shaped less by distance than by boats: the airport shuttle, the resort shuttle, the tour pick-up. These plans are built around them, and around the fact that rain, wind and cruise ships all move things.

01 · How many days

Three or four nights,
usually.

Three to four nights covers what the island does best: a lagoon day, a dive or the Pahia climb, a morning in Vaitape and the north, and one day of doing nothing in a good room. Two nights is transit. You lose half of each to the flight and the boats, and one rainy day leaves you with nothing.

Five nights earns its place if you split the stay between the main island and a motu resort, or if you dive. Seven suits two kinds of trip: a honeymoon that is mainly about the room, or a slow week with a second dive day, a sail and proper rest days. Past that, most people are paying a motu resort's nightly rate to repeat the same things.

If money is the limit, cut nights before you cut the lagoon tour. If time is the limit, put Bora Bora at the end of the trip and keep a night on Tahiti before the international flight.

02 · Day zero

Your long-haul flight
decides day one.

Every international flight lands on Tahiti, so the first question is what time. Air France's flights from Paris via Los Angeles reach Faa'a at 05:30 in the autumn 2026 schedule2; Air Tahiti Nui's Los Angeles nonstop takes about 8 h 173 and has also landed around dawn (05:05 in its 2025 filing)4. With Air Tahiti's 90-minute minimum connection5, a morning flight to Bora Bora is realistic, and you are on the lagoon by lunch.

United's San Francisco flights land in the evening, at 18:40 or 20:00 from late October 20266 — after the last scheduled departures to Bora Bora, which leave by about 19:357. Sleep on Tahiti and fly in the morning; count that night in the trip, not in the Bora Bora plan.

Going home works the same way in reverse. Air France leaves Faa'a at 07:402, which forces a last night on Tahiti; United leaves at 20:40 or 22:106, which makes a Bora Bora morning possible inside Air Tahiti's 120-minute minimum5. We would still sleep on Tahiti: a delayed island flight is the one thing that can cost you the long-haul seat.

If you land at dawn, don't book the lagoon tour for that afternoon. You will be tired, and the tour is the day you least want to lose. Swim, eat, sleep, and keep the tour for the first full day.

03 · The fixed points

What the days
are built around.

Flights
Tahiti–Bora Bora takes about 50 minutes8. Air Tahiti and Air Moana between them schedule about 33 nonstop flights a week, departing 05:45–19:35 (a schedule aggregator's count, October 2026)7. Air Tahiti asks you to check in 1 h 30 before departure9.Air Tahiti also flies direct from Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Maupiti, Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava
Airport shuttle
The airport is on Motu Mute. Air Tahiti's free boat to Vaitape takes about 15 minutes; for departures it leaves the Vaitape quay 1 h 30 before the flight, and seats are limited10.Motu resorts send their own boats
Connections on Tahiti
Air Tahiti's minimum is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way5.A night on Tahiti before flying home is the safe margin
Ferry days
The Apetahi Express arrives from Papeete at 13:20 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and leaves for Papeete at 08:05 on Monday, Thursday and Saturday (timetable from 15 June 2026)11.6 h 50 via Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a
Resort boats
Each motu resort runs its own timetable. The Four Seasons: 15 minutes by boat from the airport, and a 25-minute boat to Vaitape twice a day, Monday to Saturday12. The St. Regis: one free Vaitape shuttle a day except Sundays and public holidays, extra runs 3,600 XPF (≈ US$35) return per person, and airport transfers 17,200 XPF (≈ US$169) return13. The Conrad: shared airport transfer 18,000 XPF (≈ US$176) return per adult, Vaitape shuttle daily, fees may apply14. The Westin's destination fee, 11,550 XPF (≈ US$113) per room per night, covers airport transfers and a daily boat to its main-island base15.Prices as published by the resorts, October 2026
Tours
Shared lagoon tours run 2.5 hours (Moana Adventure Tours, at 9:00 and 13:00)16 to 4-hour half days and 6-hour full days from 9:00 (Lagoon Service)17. 4x4 tours take about 3 hours, at 9:00 or 13:0018; sunset trips about 2 hours from 17:0017.Morning slots are calmer on the water
Diving
Bora Diving Center at Matira runs a two-tank morning for certified divers (one lagoon site, one ocean site) at 23,000 XPF (≈ US$225, approximate), and single afternoon dives at 12,000 XPF (≈ US$118), with nitrox, gear and pick-up included (prices published in October 2026)19.Don't fly within the no-fly interval after your last dive
Cruise-ship days
The commune caps cruise passengers at 1,200 a day20; on ship days the quay, the taxis and Matira are noticeably busier.Check the port schedule before choosing your beach day
Rain
December and January average about 245–251 mm at the airport, July to September 62–65 mm a month (Météo-France, 1991–2020)21.Leave one day unbooked in any season

04 · Motu or main island

Where you sleep
changes the days.

Arrival
Motu resort: The resort's boat meets you at the airport pontoon22
Main island: Air Tahiti's free shuttle to Vaitape, then a taxi, le truck or pension pick-up10
Tours
Motu resort: Excursion transfers are usually included from your accommodation; confirm the pick-up point when booking22
Main island: Same rule; pick-ups from hotels around Matira and Vaitape
Dinner
Motu resort: Resort restaurants, or the shuttle to the main island and the last boat back
Main island: Walk to the Matira restaurants; Vaitape's roulottes for the cheapest hot meal
Land days
Motu resort: Every outing starts with a boat
Main island: A bike, or one day's rental from the Vaitape quay, covers the island22
Price
Motu resort: Overwater bungalows from ≈ 50,000 XPF (≈ US$490) to well over 200,000 XPF (≈ US$1,960) a night, 202623
Main island: Village Temanuata ≈ 27,000–32,000 XPF (≈ US$265–315) a bungalow for two plus VAT (undated rate sheet, checked 2026)24; three-star hotels averaged ≈ 36,000 XPF (≈ US$353) territory-wide, Jul–Sep 202525
Best at
Motu resort: Rest days, the room, the view of Otemanu
Main island: Active days, evenings out, keeping the bill down

Verdict. Split the stay if you can: the main island for the active days at the start, the motu for the last nights, when you want the room and not the road. The move costs half a day; arrange the transfer with the resort when you book.

05 · Three nights

Three nights,
main island.

  1. 01

    Day 1 · Arrive

Take the free shuttle to Vaitape (about 15 minutes) and a taxi to Matira. Swim off the beach in the afternoon and watch the sun go down from the point. Dinner within walking distance.

  2. 02

    Day 2 · The lagoon

The lagoon tour: a stingray stop, a blacktip shark stop and a coral garden, usually with lunch on a motu26. Book it before you arrive in July and August, and put it on the first full day so weather has room to move it.

  3. 03

    Day 3 · The island

Either Mount Pahia with a guide, in a dry spell — it takes 'a good few hours each way'27, so it is the whole day — or a two-tank dive morning and then, in the afternoon, a bike or scooter to Faanui for the ridge walk to the US guns (about 2 km)28 and Marae Fare Opu beside the road29, then the shops of Vaitape.

  4. 04

    Day 4 · Leave

A last swim, then the shuttle from Vaitape 1 h 30 before the flight10. Don't connect straight to an international departure: sleep on Tahiti.

06 · Three nights on a motu

Three nights,
motu resort.

  1. 01

    Day 1 · Arrive

The resort boat collects you at the airport pontoon22. Spend the afternoon at the room and the resort's own beach; check the shuttle timetable to Vaitape at reception.

  2. 02

    Day 2 · The lagoon

A shared or private lagoon tour with pick-up at the resort pontoon (confirm when booking). A private boat costs more but lets you time the ray and shark stops away from the crowd.

  3. 03

    Day 3 · Half a day ashore

Morning shuttle to Vaitape (check the day: some resort shuttles skip Sundays) for a 4x4 tour to the viewpoints and the guns, or a bike along the coast. Back for the afternoon. If dinner on the main island appeals, check the last boat first.

  4. 04

    Day 4 · Leave

The resort boat takes you to the airport. Breakfast late; the flight to Tahiti is about 50 minutes8.

07 · Four or five nights

Five nights,
split stay.

  1. 01

    Days 1–2 · Main island

Arrive and settle at Matira; the lagoon tour on day 2.

  2. 02

    Day 3 · Pahia or a dive

Climb Pahia with a guide, or dive: mantas visit the Anau cleaning station inside the lagoon, and lemon sharks patrol Tapu on the outer slope for certified divers30. Afternoon: the guns and Vaitape.

  3. 03

Day 4 · Move to the motu

Check out, take the resort's boat, and do nothing else that day. This is the night the overwater room is for.

  4. 04

Day 5 · On the water

Paddle or snorkel from the room in the morning; a sunset cruise or a jet-ski tour in the afternoon if you want one more outing.

  5. 05

    Day 6 · Leave

Resort boat to the airport. With four nights instead of five, drop day 5 — or day 3 if you don't dive or hike.

08 · Seven nights

Seven nights,
the slow week.

  1. 01

    Nights 1–3 · Main island

The three-night main-island plan above: arrival, lagoon, the island.

  2. 02

    Day 4 · A second water day

A second dive (the ocean sites need a certification), or a private boat to snorkel the coral gardens you passed on the tour.

  3. 03

    Nights 4–7 · Motu

Move to the motu. Keep two days entirely unplanned. Add a sunset cruise, and one dinner on the main island if the shuttle times allow.

  4. 04

    Day 8 · Leave

Resort boat, flight, a night on Tahiti.

  5. 05

    Or swap three nights

If seven nights on one island feels long, give three of them to a neighbour: Taha'a faces Bora Bora across the water, and the Apetahi Express runs on to Maupiti, arriving at 14:5511. Multi-island routes are in our itineraries.

09 · Weather, crowds, bookings

Leave one day
unbooked.

Every plan here has slack in it for a reason. The wettest months bring around 212–251 mm of rain at the airport21, and a windy day can chop up the lagoon in any season. A day with nothing booked absorbs either.

July is the peak of the year for visitor nights in French Polynesia31, and on Bora Bora it is also Heiva month, with dance and song competitions in Tuvavau square in Vaitape26. Book the lagoon tour, a Pahia guide and dinner tables ahead then. In the quieter months — January, February and November31 — a day or two out is usually enough.

Check two things before fixing the days: the cruise-ship calendar (a ship day is the wrong day for Matira), and whether the restaurant you want is open. Bloody Mary's, the best-known name, was listed as temporarily closed by the tourist board in August 202632.

10 · Which plan for which trip

Five travellers,
five answers.

Honeymooners

Five nights split, or seven with four on the motu. Put the overwater nights last, when you want the room rather than the road, and the lagoon tour early. Check which way the room faces before booking.

Families

Three or four nights on the main island near Matira, for the shallow, calm water and dinners on foot. The Valley of the Kings is the tourist board's family walk27; a 2.5-hour shared safari suits short attention spans, at half price for children of 3–12 on Moana Adventure Tours' boats16.

Divers

Four or five nights with two dive mornings: the mantas at Anau inside the lagoon, the lemon sharks at Tapu outside it for certified divers30. Bora Diving Center sells a six-dive pack at 64,000 XPF (≈ US$627; October 2026)19. Keep the last day dry before the flight.

On a budget

Three nights on the main island: the free airport shuttle10, a pension at Matira, one shared lagoon tour, a bike and the Vaitape roulottes. If you want the overwater night, make it one, at the end.

Hikers

Three nights is plenty. Pahia is the one summit hike, and you will have done the guns and the coast road by the second afternoon. Give the extra days to Moorea, where the trails are.

11 · Questions

Questions.

  1. 01

How many days do you need in Bora Bora?

Three to four nights for most trips: a lagoon day, a dive or the Pahia hike, a morning on the main island and one rest day. Five if you split the stay between the main island and a motu resort; seven only for a slow honeymoon or a diving week.

  2. 02

Is three days in Bora Bora enough?

Three nights gives you two full days, which is enough for the lagoon tour and one land or dive day. It is tight if the weather turns; four nights adds the buffer.

  3. 03

Is five days in Bora Bora too long?

Not if you split the stay or dive. The island is small — the coast road is about 32 km1 — so a fifth day is for resting, not new sights.

  4. 04

Can you do Bora Bora as a day trip from Tahiti?

Technically, since the flight takes about 50 minutes8. In practice, with check-in 1 h 30 before each flight9 and a boat at each end, you get a few hours on the lagoon for the price of two flights. Stay at least two nights or skip it.

  5. 05

Should we stay on a motu or the main island?

A motu for the overwater room and the view; the main island for freedom, walkable dinners and a much smaller bill. A split stay gives you both: active days on the main island first, motu nights last.

  6. 06

Do I need to book the lagoon tour in advance?

In July and August, yes, and for any private boat. Outside the peak, a day or two ahead is usually fine. Put it early in the stay so bad weather can push it back.

  7. 07

What is the best order with Moorea?

Moorea first, Bora Bora last: the ferry makes Moorea easy to reach on arrival, and the most expensive island sits at the end. See Bora Bora vs Moorea.
