How an atoll forms

The Tuamotu
atolls.

Seventy-six rings of coral with no mountain in the middle. Three carry most of the visitors and a dozen more have flights. How the archipelago works, and what to expect when you land.

A Tuamotu atoll from the air

Islands · Tuamotus

The Tuamotu are atolls: rings of coral and sand around a lagoon, the volcano that built each one long since sunk out of sight. Tahiti Tourisme counts 76 of them1. At the 2022 census 15,159 people lived in the archipelago's 16 communes2, about half as many as live in Faa'a, Tahiti's most populous commune3, spread over lagoons so large that Rangiroa's alone, at 1,446 km², is bigger than the island of Tahiti45.

01 · The short answer

Three atolls,
then a long tail.

Most visitors go to three. Rangiroa for Tiputa pass, the dolphins and the most services; Fakarava for the sharks of the south pass and the biosphere reserve; Tikehau for a small, quiet lagoon with manta rays. All three have Air Tahiti flights from Tahiti, dive centres and family pensions6.

Behind them comes a tail of atolls with an airstrip and a few guesthouses — Manihi, Ahe, Mataiva, Arutua, Takapoto and Takaroa among them — and then the majority, which are working places first: copra, fish parks, pearl farms and a supply ship every week or two. Air Tahiti flies to 13 atolls in the northern Tuamotu alone6.

Two atolls in the far south-east, Moruroa and Fangataufa, were France's nuclear test sites from 1966 to 19967. They are not part of anyone's itinerary.

03 · Atoll realities

Flat, bright
and short of things.

Nothing on an atoll stands more than a few metres above the sea. Rangiroa's rim is flat coral with no viewpoints4, there is little shade between the villages18, and the glare off white sand and shallow water is constant. Bring a hat, a rash vest, reef shoes and more sunscreen than you think you need.

Cash. Rangiroa has two ATMs, at the airport and in the village4; Tikehau has one, at the post office, which keeps short morning hours10. Tahiti Tourisme advises bringing cash even to Rangiroa19. On the smaller atolls, plan as if there were no machine at all.

Water and food. Don't count on drinkable tap water: on Tikehau the village drinking-water point was out of service in 2025 and water was sold by the litre10. On Fakarava, supply ships come every 7 to 10 days and fresh produce runs short in between20. That is why pensions sell half board, and why it makes sense to take it.

Health. Rangiroa has a medical centre with two doctors and a pharmacy (2024)4; Tikehau has an infirmary with one nurse and no doctor (2025)10. Bring the medicines you need and insurance that covers evacuation to Tahiti.

Getting around. One road on the main motu, if that: about 10 km on Rangiroa18, about 15 km south from Fakarava's airport21, a few miles on Tikehau22. Bikes do most jobs. Everything else — the far motu, the pink sand, the passes — is a boat your host books, and the airports on Rangiroa, Fakarava and Tikehau have no shuttle: arrange the transfer when you book the room122311.

04 · Visitor status

Which atolls
you can actually visit.

Rangiroa
Flights: two to eight a day from Tahiti, by season, and direct to Bora Bora, Tikehau and Fakarava12 · Beds: hotels and pensions · Diving: centres at Tiputa pass16 · Money: two ATMs4The Kia Ora, the atoll's resort with overwater rooms, is listed by a tour operator as closed for renovation from November 202624
Fakarava
Flights: every day in Air Tahiti's summer 2026 timetable, one to three a day25 · Beds: family pensions and lodges, north and south · Diving: clubs in Rotoava and at the south pass20The airport has no shuttle or taxi; pensions collect their guests23
Tikehau
Flights: not daily — four a week one way and five the other in 202510 · Beds: pensions in Tuherahera, private-motu lodges and one resort, Le Tikehau26 · Diving: three centres listed27 · Money: one ATM10
Manihi
Flights: 1 h from Tahiti, 35 min from Rangiroa · Beds: family guesthouses; there are no hotels, restaurants or bars, so you eat where you sleep · Diving is the main activity13Where pearl farming in French Polynesia began, with the first farm in 19686
Ahe
Flights: 1 h 15 from Tahiti · Known for its pearl farms and one of the last primary forests in the Tuamotu; the village is Tenukupara6A cargo-passenger ship, Dory 2, was due to call weekly from July 202628
Mataiva
Air Tahiti flights · A lagoon divided into some seventy pools about 8 m deep, nine channels (hoa) that give the atoll its name, and a village, Pahua, split by a channel and joined by a bridge6292 people (2022), part of the commune of Rangiroa9
Arutua
Air Tahiti flights, 409 km from Tahiti · A 484 km² lagoon with one pass, fish parks and pearl farms, and a few guesthouses in Rautini village6
Takapoto and Takaroa
Air Tahiti flights to both, twin atolls about ten kilometres apart · Pearl atolls: Takapoto has no pass and was a mother-of-pearl diving centre from 1880 to 1965; Takaroa has the 1906 wreck of the County of Roxburgh on its reef6
Makatea
No airport: about 15 hours by boat from Papeete, or by sailboat from Rangiroa · A raised atoll with cliffs, phosphate-mining ruins from 1917–1962, climbing routes and family guesthouses895 residents in 20229
Kauehi, Katiu, Niau, Kaukura
On Air Tahiti's northern Tuamotu network6. Kauehi and Niau are in the Fakarava biosphere reserve, and Niau has its own endemic kingfisher29Working atolls first: check that a room exists before you buy the flight
The rest
Mostly working atolls, served for their residents by Air Tahiti and the cargo ships. Moruroa and Fangataufa, the former test sites, are not visitor destinations7

05 · Diving

The pass
is the point.

Atoll lagoons fill and empty through their passes. On the incoming tide, clear ocean water pours in, and the boats drop divers outside the reef to ride it in with grey reef sharks and schooling fish. On the outgoing tide the current reverses and can run hard: Garuae, Fakarava's 1.6 km north pass, can reach 8 knots in the south-east trade winds of June to September20. The tide table, not you, sets the day.

The headline sites: Tiputa on Rangiroa, with the Shark Cave at about 35 m and great hammerheads from January to March at 45–55 m30; Tumakohua, Fakarava's south pass, quota-limited and dived only with an approved club31; and Tuheiava, Tikehau's single pass, with morays, Napoleon wrasse, barracuda and the occasional manta27.

Prices for 2026: an introductory dive costs 14,000 XPF (approximately US$137) at Rangiroa Diving Center and 15,000 XPF (approximately US$147) at O2 Fakarava; a single dive for certified divers 10,900–12,000 XPF (approximately US$107–118)1632. Snorkelers get much of the show: Tikehau's mantas at a cleaning station inside the lagoon33, the calm Aquarium just inside Tiputa34, and Fakarava's south pass from the surface on an incoming tide20.

06 · The Fakarava biosphere reserve

Seven atolls,
almost all of it sea.

UNESCO's Commune de Fakarava biosphere reserve covers seven atolls — Aratika, Fakarava, Kauehi, Niau, Raraka, Taiaro and Toau — and 1,986,735 hectares, of which only 8,204 are land29. UNESCO gives 1977 as its year of nomination29; Air Tahiti dates the present seven-atoll reserve to 200614.

What it protects: coral formations and seagrass beds, kopara ponds built by living cyanobacteria and algae, primary forest of puatea (Pisonia grandis), and on Niau an endemic kingfisher, the koteuteu. UNESCO counts 1,581 people inside it, most of them in Fakarava's villages; pearl farming was once the leading activity, but several farms have closed29.

For visitors the reserve means rules. The pink sands near Fakarava's south end are a strict nature reserve — no anchoring, no camping, no fires, access only by dinghy or with an operator20. The south pass, where some 700 grey reef sharks were estimated in 2014 and up to 900 during the June–July grouper spawning in a 2016 study, is dived only with approved clubs31.

07 · Hopping between atolls

Fly via Rangiroa,
not back to Tahiti.

  1. 01

    From Tahiti

Air Tahiti flies Tahiti–Rangiroa in about an hour, two to eight times a day depending on the season12; Tikehau in 55 minutes, but not every day11; Fakarava in 1 h 1014. Air Moana also lists all three among its destinations35. Air Tahiti's minimum connection from an international flight is 90 minutes36; a night on Tahiti first is safer.

  2. 02

    Rangiroa as the hub

Rangiroa has direct flights to Tikehau, Fakarava and Bora Bora12, so a second atoll rarely means going back through Papeete.

  3. 03

Rangiroa and Fakarava: do Rangiroa first

In Air Tahiti's summer 2026 timetable (29 March–24 October) there was a direct Rangiroa → Fakarava flight every day, but a direct Fakarava → Rangiroa flight only on Mondays25. The timetable from November had not been published when we checked on 19 October 2026: confirm before you book.

  4. 04

    Tikehau

Tikehau–Rangiroa is a 20-minute hop. The Tuamotu administration's 2025 atoll sheet counted five a week, and a single Tikehau–Fakarava flight a week, on Wednesdays10. Build the trip around those days.

  5. 05

    From the Society Islands

Bora Bora has direct flights to Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava37, and Fakarava also has a direct link from Moorea25. A Society–Tuamotu trip can therefore be a loop: Tahiti, Moorea or the Leewards, Bora Bora, the atolls, Tahiti. See the Society Islands.

  6. 06

    Passes

Air Tahiti markets its multi-island passes as the cheaper way to visit several islands14. See Air Tahiti passes.

  7. 07

    By sea

Cargo ships from Papeete serve the atolls, but the western service has been fragile: the Dory stopped in September 2025, the Mareva Nui broke down in January 2026, and a replacement, Dory 2, was due in July 2026 to carry freight and passengers weekly to Tikehau, Rangiroa, Ahe and Manihi28. The Aranui 5 stops at Fakarava and at Rangiroa or Makatea on its Marquesas voyages38, and its sister ship Aranoa has a short Tuamotu voyage scheduled for May 202739.

08 · Atoll or high island

The Tuamotu against
the Society Islands.

Landscape
Tuamotu atolls: A flat ring of coral and sand around a lagoon; nothing higher than the palms
Society Islands: Mountains in the middle, a barrier reef and a lagoon around them
In the water
Tuamotu atolls: Pass dives with sharks and pelagic fish in the current; lagoons too wide to see across
Society Islands: Calmer, smaller lagoons; easy snorkelling, gentler diving
On land
Tuamotu atolls: Villages, bikes, a pearl farm; little shade and nothing to climb
Society Islands: Hikes, marae, waterfalls, museums, markets
Places to stay
Tuamotu atolls: Mostly family pensions on half board; a few hotels on Rangiroa and Tikehau
Society Islands: From overwater resorts to pensions
Flights from Tahiti
Tuamotu atolls: 55 min to 1 h 15, less often once you leave the big three116
Society Islands: 15 to 55 min, plus ferries to Moorea and the Leewards4041
Nights
Tuamotu atolls: Our atoll guides suggest 3–5 on Tikehau, 4–6 on Rangiroa, 5–7 on Fakarava
Society Islands: 2–5 per island in our guides

Verdict. Pair them rather than choose: the Society Islands for mountains, culture and comfort, one or two atolls for the water. Bora Bora's direct flights to the three big atolls make the join easy.

09 · Pearls, copra, fish parks

Working atolls
first.

Tourism is the newcomer. Pearl farming in French Polynesia began on Manihi, with the first farm in 19686, and the Tuamotu and Gambier now hold almost all the pearl farms outside Taha'a17. Copra, dried coconut, still pays: Rangiroa produced 334 tonnes in 20234 and Tikehau 105, where four fish parks also work the lagoon10.

The pearl business has shrunk. Rangiroa had only two pearl farmers left in 20244, Tikehau had no pearl farms10, and UNESCO notes the closure of several farms inside the Fakarava reserve29. A farm visit is the best way to understand the graft and the grading; compare prices with Papeete before spending seriously.

10 · When to go

Dry from June,
wet from November.

June to October is the dry season on the atolls: 65–122 mm of rain a month at Takaroa, the station nearest Fakarava with published normals42, and about 45 mm in August at the Tikehau rain gauge. November to February is wet, 180–240 mm a month on Tikehau43.

Wildlife keeps its own calendar. Groupers spawn in Fakarava's south pass around the June and July full moons, when shark numbers peak31; great hammerheads appear at Tiputa from January to March30. Between June and October, book dives and boat trips with the room34. For the month-by-month view, see when to go.

11 · Questions

Questions.

  1. 01

How many atolls are in the Tuamotus?

76, by Tahiti Tourisme's count1. Counts vary slightly with how raised atolls such as Makatea are classified.

  2. 02

Which Tuamotu atoll should I visit first?

Rangiroa for services and Tiputa pass, Fakarava for the south-pass sharks and the biosphere reserve, Tikehau for a small, quiet lagoon with mantas. Any two combine easily by air, Rangiroa before Fakarava.

  3. 03

Can I hop between atolls by boat?

Not reliably. Cargo ships carry some passengers, but the western Tuamotu service was disrupted in 2025 and 202628. Flights are the practical way.

  4. 04

Do I need cash in the Tuamotus?

Yes. Rangiroa has two ATMs and Tikehau one410; on other atolls plan as if there were none, and expect some small places to take cash only.

  5. 05

Are there overwater bungalows in the Tuamotus?

Very few. Rangiroa's Kia Ora has overwater rooms but is listed as closing for renovation from November 202624. Most atoll stays are beach bungalows in family pensions.

  6. 06

    Is diving the passes safe?

With an operator, yes: every dive is guided and timed to the tide. Passes such as Tiputa and Garuae run strong currents, so they are for certified divers, and the nearest hyperbaric chamber is on Tahiti16.
