Hiva Oa,
the artists' island.
The southern Marquesas' great island: giant stone tiki in the jungle, black-sand bays, and the graves of Gauguin and Brel on a hill above Atuona.
01 / Orientation
Painters, singers,
and stone gods.
Hiva Oa rises to Mount Temetiu at 1,213 m above Atuona, the village where two European artists chose to end their lives at the edge of the world: Paul Gauguin, who arrived in 1901 and died here in 1903, and the Belgian singer Jacques Brel, who sailed in during 1975 and stayed until his death in 1978. Both lie in the Calvary Cemetery on the hill, and small museums in the village keep their stories.
The island's deeper fame is older. In the Puamau valley on the northeast coast, the ceremonial site of Ipona holds Takai'i — at about 2.4 m, the largest ancient stone tiki in French Polynesia — among platforms and figures that mark one of the great sanctuaries of the Marquesas. Roughly 2,200 people live on the island today.

Ipona,
before the noise.
Takai'i has watched the Puamau valley for centuries. Arrive with a guide, read the platforms slowly, and let the site keep its silence.
04 / A sensible first visit
Days that
use the island well.
- 01Base in Atuona
The village holds the museums, the cemetery walk, black-sand Ta'a Oa nearby, and most of the island's beds.
- 02Book the Puamau day
The coast road to Ipona is spectacular and slow — a driver-guide turns it into the island's best day.
- 03Pay the artists a visit
Gauguin's and Brel's graves take an unhurried hour, best in early light with the bay below.
- 04Ask before you photograph
Sacred sites and private land interleave; guides know which platforms welcome visitors.
