Atuona bay

2,371 people, the garden of the Marquesas for its grapefruit and pineapple, a black-sand bay at Atuona open to the swell, and Tahuata's white sand a short crossing away. Part of the 2024 World Heritage listing.

01 · Atuona

Two graves
on a hill.

Paul Gauguin came to Atuona in 1901 and died here in 1903. Jacques Brel arrived by yacht in 1975 and died in 1978. They lie a few metres apart in the Calvary cemetery on the hillside above the village, and you can walk up from the centre. Below, the Gauguin cultural centre is built around a reconstruction of his house, the Maison du Jouir, and the Espace Jacques Brel is a photo exhibition in a hangar around his light aircraft, Jojo, which he used to fly patients to Nuku Hiva and fetch the mail.

The village is compact: museums, shops, the craft centre and almost every bed on the island within a few minutes of each other, with lodges and pensions on the slopes above Atuona and the harbour bay of Tahauku next door. Carving and tattoo are the living trades here, and this is the easiest place in the islands to meet the people who practise them. By the harbour, a rock nearly ten metres long is covered in petroglyphs.

The headline site is a full day away. Iipona, in the Puamau valley on the north-east coast, is reached by the long road along the mountainside and holds Takai'i, the tallest ancient tiki in French Polynesia at over two metres, and beside it a figure lying on her front that is easy to miss next to the giant. Go with a driver-guide booked through your pension, in a 4WD, on a dry day.

03 · Logistics

Three or four
nights.

Air Tahiti flies Tahiti to Hiva Oa in a minimum of 3 h 15, some routings via Nuku Hiva, with return fares from 96,660 XPF in October 2026; Air Moana's weekly rotations start in spring 2027. The Aranui 5 spends an afternoon here on its 12-day loop. The public shuttle Te Ata O Hiva links Hiva Oa with Tahuata and Fatu Hiva on a schedule the maritime affairs office posts and the sea revises. The airport is above Atuona with no shuttle; Relais Moehau charges 3,180 XPF a person for the return transfer.

The one hotel is Hanakee Lodge, seventeen bungalows on the hillside above the bay with an infinity pool and a terrace restaurant. Relais Moehau is an eight-room family hotel in the village, 300 metres from the Brel centre, with a restaurant open daily and rooms for two from about 13,843 XPF with breakfast or 24,290 half board; air conditioning is extra. Temetiu Village and Pension Kanahau sit on the heights above Tahauku. Marquises Diving takes certified divers to the Rabot caves at 20 to 27 metres with large morays, and to Kiukiu Point for mantas.

06 · Who it does not suit

Not a beach
island either.

There is no lagoon, the village beach is black sand on an open bay, and the nono flies are a fixture. Puamau is a long rough drive. Restaurants are few and dinner is usually at your guesthouse. For people who come for history and the living arts, and for a slower stay in a compact village with Nuku Hiva fifty minutes away, it is the best-paced island in the Marquesas.

Travellers who come for people and history: the Gauguin and Brel story in Atuona, the stone tiki at Puamau and Taaoa, and the carving and tattoo that are still a living trade. It also suits a slower stay — Atuona is a compact village with its beds, museums and shops close together, and day trips to Tahuata leave from its harbour.

Typical stay: 3–4 nights. One day for Atuona's museums and cemetery, one for Puamau, one for Taaoa or a boat to Tahuata — plus a spare for weather.

International
All international flights land at Faa'a (PPT) on Tahiti. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way; with a 3-hour domestic leg on top, a night on Tahiti in each direction is the sane plan.1
Domestic flights
Air Tahiti flies Tahiti–Hiva Oa (1,434 km) in a minimum of 3 h 15; some routings stop at Nuku Hiva and take longer. Its website quoted return fares from 96,660 XPF (≈ US$948) including 7,560 XPF of taxes when checked in October 2026.2
Air Moana
Air Moana also flies to Atuona with ATR 72s. Its schedule from late March 2027, as reported in October 2026, shows a weekly Papeete–Nuku Hiva–Hiva Oa rotation, rising to two from 7 May 2027, plus a weekly Papeete–Hiva Oa–Nuku Hiva triangle.3
Aranui 5
The cargo-passenger ship's 12-day round trip from Papeete spends a day in the southern group: on the November 2026 itinerary, Tahuata in the morning, then Atuona in the afternoon with a 4WD trip to Taaoa, the Gauguin sites and the cemetery. 2026 fares from US$4,174 (≈ 426,000 XPF) per person in the dormitory or an obstructed-view cabin.4
Inter-island boat
Te Ata O Hiva, the public shuttle of the southern Marquesas, links Hiva Oa with Tahuata and Fatu Hiva. Air Tahiti points to the DPAM (Direction polynésienne des affaires maritimes) for schedules; sea conditions decide the rest.2
Airport transfer
The airport is some distance from Atuona and has no shuttle. Taxis are often there for arrivals; otherwise your host collects you. Relais Moehau charges 3,180 XPF (≈ US$31) per person for the return transfer (2026).5
4WD rental
Tahiti Tourisme lists Marquises Cycles & Car and M2R Location among Hiva Oa's rental operators. Roads are steep and sometimes in poor condition; a 4WD is the minimum, and a guided tour is the easier first look.6
Boats & horses
Remote valleys are easier by fishing boat or motorboat than by road, and Tahuata is a short crossing south-east. Horses can be hired for the back country.7
On foot
Atuona's sights are close together: the Gauguin and Brel centres in the village, and the Calvary cemetery on the hillside above it — uphill, but walkable.8

09 · Where to stay

Which side
of the island.

Atuona & Tahauku. The village and its harbour bay next door: museums, shops, the cemetery on the hill and almost every bed on the island. Lodges and pensions sit on the slopes above Tahauku and Atuona bays. Best for: Bases, no-car days, Gauguin and Brel.

Taaoa (west). The valley west of Atuona with the Upeke ceremonial site and its tiki. A half-day out from Atuona. Best for: Archaeology close to town.

Puamau (north-east). The north-east district (378 people in 2022), reached by the long road along the mountainside, with the Iipona site. A day trip; few visitors stay. Best for: The great tiki.

Hanaiapa & the north coast. Small villages in deep bays on the north side. Air Tahiti calls Hanaiapa picturesque; it is also a long way on steep roads. Best for: Drives with a guide, quiet.

Tahuata. The neighbouring island across the Bordelais channel: white-sand beaches and the sheltered bay at Vaitahu. Most visit for the day by boat. Best for: Swimming, carvers, a change of island.

Hotel
The island's one hotel: 17 bungalows on the hillside above Atuona bay, an infinity pool and a terrace restaurant. Still listed by Tahiti Tourisme under its old name, Hiva Oa Hanakee Pearl Lodge (with 14 bungalows); Pearl Resorts' current collection no longer includes it. No public rates. Examples: Hanakee Lodge.9
Pensions & guesthouses
Relais Moehau is an 8-room family hotel in Atuona, about 300 m from the Brel centre, with a restaurant open daily. Temetiu Village has 6 bungalows and 4 rooms with a pool above Tahauku; Pension Kanahau has 4 bungalows, some with kitchens, on the same heights. No lagoon
There is no barrier reef and no lagoon; open-ocean swell reaches the bays directly. Snorkeling is a boat-and-calm-day activity, not a walk from your room.10Lagoon

    Upeke, Taaoa

    Archaeology. A sacred former ceremonial site in the forest of the Taaoa valley, with numerous tiki, one carved on a flat stone about 1.2 m tall. Stay on the paths, don't climb the stones; no fires, alcohol or picnics. Air Tahiti counts over 1,000 paepae in the valley.12

    Iipona, beyond Takai'i

    Archaeology. Among the Puamau figures, one tiki represents a woman lying down — easy to miss next to the giant.2

    Tahauku petroglyphs

    Archaeology. A rock 9.60 m long covered in engravings, near the harbour bay next to Atuona.2

    Paul Gauguin cultural centre

    Museum. Built around a reconstruction of Gauguin's house, the Maison du Jouir, rebuilt like the original, with objects linked to the painter.8

13 · Food and shopping

What to eat,
and where.

Air Tahiti calls Hiva Oa the garden of the Marquesas: grapefruit, pineapple, papaya and vegetables grow well here, and they turn up at breakfast. Most visitors eat at their pension on half board; the alternatives are a handful of tables in Atuona and lunches organised on tours. At Relais Moehau, a three-course dinner was 5,247 XPF (≈ US$51) in 2026. Book dinner the same day, and carry cash in the villages.

Shopping. Carving and tattoo are the island's crafts: Air Tahiti lists Atuona's craft centre alongside the museums, and sculptors work in the villages. On Tahuata, bone and shell carvings are sold to visiting ships. Black pearls are not grown in the Marquesas — the Tuamotu and Gambier produce nearly all of them — so buy those in Papeete if at all.

One island,
several trips.

Families
Manageable with older children: the museums and cemetery are walkable, and a boat day to Tahuata gives the calmest swimming. Pension rooms for three or four are common (Relais Moehau prices up to four). Long 4WD days to Puamau test small children.
Honeymoons
A good second island after the Societies for couples who want art history and quiet instead of an overwater room. The hotel's bay view and pool are the comfortable option; pensions are friendlier and cheaper.
On a budget
Flights are most of the cost. A pension with breakfast, a shared 4WD tour for Puamau, and the public shuttle to Tahuata keep the rest moderate. Note that air conditioning is often an extra.
Nightlife
There is none to speak of. Dinner at the pension, an early night, and roosters at dawn.

Prices: Relais Moehau publishes one rate for all of 2026, so the score mainly reflects flight demand in the July and Christmas school holidays..

How long,
and with what.

Three or four nights covers Atuona, Puamau and Taaoa, with a spare day for Tahuata or the weather. Most visitors pair Hiva Oa with Nuku Hiva, 50 minutes away by air — Nuku Hiva for hikes and boats, Hiva Oa for Gauguin, Brel and the tiki. From Atuona, the public shuttle makes Tahuata a day trip and Fatu Hiva a longer one. The Aranui 5 covers all six inhabited islands in 12 days, with an afternoon in Atuona.
