Two flights a week, a 45-minute boat from the airstrip, a cathedral built of coral and lime, and pearl farms in every direction.
Rikitea and the Gambier lagoon
1,570 people in the Gambier, an hour ahead of Tahiti and 3 h 40 away by air. Rikitea has the cathedral, the quay, seven shops, two bakeries, one cash machine and a medical centre with one doctor. The lagoon grew about a quarter of the country's pearls in 2019; the farm buoys are visible from every hill.
01 · Mission stone
A theocracy
in coral and lime.
From 1834 to 1871 Father Honoré Laval ran these islands as a theocracy, and the legacy is more than a hundred stone buildings: churches, presbyteries, convents, schools, weaving workshops, bread ovens, lime kilns, watchtowers, and an older culture largely erased in the process. The biggest of them is St Michael's Cathedral at Rikitea, coral stone covered in lime, about 150 feet long, with eighteen ochre columns inside and a pulpit inlaid with mother-of-pearl and sperm-whale teeth. It was inaugurated in 1841, its two towers followed in 1847 and 1848, it was restored in 2011, and Laval's colleague Père Caret is buried beneath it.
Across the lagoon the small islands keep churches out of all proportion to their populations: Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix on Akamaru, with sixteen residents and a mass once a year; Saint-Gabriel on Taravai, the newest church in the Gambier, on an island of five. Guided boat trips reach them; there is no public ferry within the lagoon. Above Rikitea, Mount Duff rises to 441 metres along a ridge past a small marae, with the bay, Taravai and the whole lagoon below.

The pearl farms
124 registered farmers held 1,939 hectares of lagoon concessions in 2024. Buy at the farms, through your pension, where you can see what you are paying for. The nacre is carved and engraved on the island too.
Mount Duff
The trail from Rikitea follows a ridge to the 441-metre summit; a tougher route continues to Mount Mokoto. The island's road loop is about 23 km, six of it concrete and the rest crushed coral.
03 · Getting in and staying
Tuesdays and
Saturdays.
Air Tahiti flies on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the summer 2026 timetable, leaving Tahiti at 06:30 and landing at 11:15 local time, with return fares from 107,460 XPF, so the realistic stays are three, four or seven nights and the night before departure is spent on Tahiti. The airstrip is on a motu on the reef; the commune's boat crosses to Rikitea in about 45 minutes, fare paid on boarding, and for the flight out you need to be at the harbour two hours before take-off. Two cargo ships, the Taporo 8 and the Nuku Hau, call roughly monthly with a handful of berths, for the very flexible only.
In mid-2024 the whole archipelago had three pensions with fourteen rooms between them plus one guest house, so the bed comes before the flight. Pension Maro'i has four bungalows on a white-sand beach five minutes from Rikitea; Kirimiro Beach, ten minutes up the coast road, has bungalows and rooms, lends kayaks, masks and snorkels, and rents cars, quads and bikes; Chez Jojo has seafront bungalows with hot water, free bikes and kayaks, and half board at about 12,300 XPF a person. There is no dive centre; snorkel from the pension in water of 23 to 24 °C from July to October, and pack a fleece for nights of 19 to 20 °C.

06 · Who it does not suit
Not a short trip,
and not a warm one.
No dive centre, water several degrees cooler than the Tuamotu, a mild rather than tropical winter, flights twice a week and a fare that starts above 100,000 XPF. Mangareva does not combine easily with anything. It suits travellers with time and an interest in history, pearl buyers who want to see the farms, walkers, and anyone who likes the idea of a place with four guesthouses and no tourist industry to speak of.

Travellers with time and an interest in history: the Gambier keep more than a hundred mission-era stone buildings, on islands you can walk across in an afternoon. It also suits pearl buyers who want to see the farms, walkers, and anyone who likes the idea of a place with four guesthouses and no tourist industry to speak of.
Typical stay: 4 or 7 nights. With flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the realistic stays are three, four or seven nights; four leaves room for the cathedral, Mount Duff, a pearl farm and one island trip.

- International
- International flights land at Faa'a (PPT) on Tahiti. Air Tahiti's minimum connection is 90 minutes from an international to a domestic flight and 120 minutes the other way — but the Gambier flight leaves at 06:30, so plan a night on Tahiti on the way in.1
- Domestic flights
- Air Tahiti flies Tahiti–Mangareva (1,654 km) in 3 h 40. In the summer 2026 timetable (29 March–24 October) there are two flights a week, Tuesday and Saturday, departing Tahiti at 06:30 and landing at 11:15 local time; the return leaves at 12:00 and reaches Tahiti at 14:50 Tahiti time. A few dates are cancelled or routed via another island. Return fares from 107,460 XPF (≈ US$1,054) on Air Tahiti's site, October 2026.2
- Airport boat
- Totegegie is a motu on the reef; the commune's shuttle boat crosses to Rikitea in about 45 minutes, fare paid when boarding. For the flight out, be at Rikitea harbour at least 2 hours before take-off. Pensions can meet you at the quay.3
- Cargo ships
- The Taporo 8 and the Nuku Hau each called about twelve times in 2022, carrying a few passengers (12 and 9 berths); the Aranui 5 came twice. Possible for the very flexible, but the plane is the only way to plan.4
- On foot & by bike
- Rikitea is small enough to walk, and Tahiti Tourisme says most visitors don't need a car. A road circles the island: about 23 km, of which only 6 km is concrete and the rest crushed coral.4
- Rental cars & quads
- Two rental firms operate on the island, and Pension Kirimiro Beach rents cars, quads and bikes to guests.5
- Boats to the other islands
- Akamaru, Aukena and Taravai are reached on guided boat trips; ask your pension. There is no public ferry within the lagoon.6
09 · Where to stay
Which side
of the island.
Rikitea. The village: the cathedral, the quay where the airport boat lands, the shops, bakeries, post office and medical centre. Most pensions are within a few minutes of it. Best for: Everything on foot.
Kirimiro, north of Rikitea. Ten minutes' drive from Rikitea along the coast road, with a grocery and bakery nearby and Pension Kirimiro Beach on the water. Best for: A quieter base with a car or bike.
Akamaru, Aukena & Taravai. Small high islands in the same lagoon, with 16, 14 and 5 residents respectively and mission churches out of all proportion to them. Day trips only, by arrangement. Best for: Churches, picnics, a day on the water.

- Pensions & guesthouses
- In mid-2024 the whole archipelago had three pensions with 14 rooms between them, plus one guest house with two — book the bed before the flight. Pension Maro'i has four bungalows on a white-sand beach five minutes from Rikitea; Kirimiro Beach has four bungalows and four rooms with shared bathrooms, open all year in 2026; Chez Jojo has seafront bungalows with hot water, free bikes and kayaks, and half board. - The Gambier lagoon
- Since February 2026 the lagoon has been managed under a residents' marine protected area plan (2026–2036) that favours small-scale fishing and pushes pearl farming toward lower-impact methods.8Lagoon

- We found no dive centre listed for the Gambier. Snorkel from shore with the pension's gear — Kirimiro Beach lends kayaks, masks and snorkels free — and expect water of 23–24 °C from July to October.5Snorkeling

St Michael's Cathedral, Rikitea
Culture. Coral stone covered in lime, about 150 feet long, with 18 ochre columns inside, a pulpit inlaid with mother-of-pearl and sperm-whale teeth, and Père Caret buried beneath. Tahiti Tourisme dates the inauguration to 1841 and the two bell towers to 1847–1848; restored in 2011, it is a listed historic monument.10

Mount Duff
Hike. The 441 m summit above Rikitea. The trail passes a small marae and follows a ridge; the view takes in Gatavake bay, Taravai and the lagoon. A tougher route continues to Mount Mokoto.11

13 · Food and shopping
What to eat,
and where.
Pensions feed their guests, usually on half board, and dinner is fish from the lagoon. Beyond that Rikitea has seven shops, two snacks, a snack-bar and two bakeries. Fresh supplies arrive by cargo ship, so ask your pension before assuming anything is available.
Shopping. Black pearls are the local product — the Gambier grew about a quarter of French Polynesia's output in 2019 — and the nacre is carved and engraved on the island. Buy at the farms, through your pension, where you can see what you're paying for. There are only three craft outlets in the commune.

One island,

- Families
- Possible for curious children who don't need entertainment. There is a medical centre with one doctor in Rikitea, the roads are quiet, and the pensions lend kayaks and bikes. The 3 h 40 flight and the boat at each end are the hard part.
- Honeymoons
- No resorts, no overwater bungalows, no spa. A beach bungalow at a family pension and an island almost to yourselves — which is the point for some couples and the opposite for most.
- On a budget
- The flight is the cost: about 107,000 XPF return before anything else. After that, half-board pensions, walking and borrowed kayaks keep spending low.
- Nightlife
- There is none: two snacks, a snack-bar and pension dinners. Evenings are for the stars and an early night before the next boat.

and with what.
Four nights (Saturday to Tuesday is three, Tuesday to Saturday four) covers the cathedral, Mount Duff, a pearl farm and a day on the lagoon; seven gives time for the outer islands and for weather. Mangareva doesn't combine easily: flights go to and from Tahiti, with a monthly Saturday link from Hao in some months (2024), so most trips are a dedicated return from Papeete. Sleep on Tahiti the night before the 06:30 departure.

Twice a week, Tuesday and Saturday, in Air Tahiti's summer 2026 timetable (to 24 October). The winter timetable from November was not yet published when we checked; confirm before booking anything else.

One, in Rikitea (2024 figures). Bring enough cash anyway in case it is empty or out of service.

Were the Gambier affected by the nuclear tests?
Yes. A 2006 French government report acknowledged that fallout from the July 1966 Aldébaran test, and two others in 1966 and 1971, reached Mangareva; some young children may have received thyroid doses of 80–98 mSv. Tests at Moruroa and Fangataufa were atmospheric until 1974 and ended in 1996.

We found no dive centre listed. Snorkeling from shore and lagoon boat trips arranged by pensions are the realistic options.

How cold does it get?
Average lows are 19–20 °C from July to September at Rikitea, and the sea drops to about 23 °C. Pack a fleece and consider a shorty wetsuit.
