Mangareva is the central island of the Gambier group, a cluster of high islands inside one huge lagoon at the country's southeastern extremity. Around 1,500 people live in the archipelago, most in Rikitea beneath Mount Duff (441 m). The lagoon's cool, clean water grows Pinctada margaritifera renowned for color — many of the finest Tahitian pearls start here.
Rikitea's skyline belongs to St Michael's Cathedral, built 1839–1848 from coral limestone by Picpus missionaries and islander masons, its altar inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Restored between 2009 and 2011, it seats 1,200 — the largest church in the South Pacific, in a village of a few hundred souls: the whole strange history of the mission era in one building.

Flights are not daily; between the airport-motu boat and the time change, give the Gambier five nights or more.

Cathedral, mission ruins, pearl workshops, and the climb toward Mount Duff all start from the village street.

Ask your pension to arrange it: grafting, harvest, and colors you will not see in shop windows.
- 04Island-hop the lagoon
Taravai, Akamaru, and Aukena hold chapels, orchards, and a handful of families — day trips by arrangement.
