Island guide · Marquesas Islands
Nuku Hiva,
the mysterious north.
Cathedral cliffs, valleys that swallowed whole chapters of literature, and one of the tallest waterfalls in the Pacific — the Marquesas begin here.
01 / Orientation
Land of men,
sea of cliffs.
Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas — Te Henua 'Enana, 'the land of men' — about 339 km² of basalt ridges and deep green amphitheatre valleys, without a protecting reef. Some 3,200 people live here, most around Taiohae's great horseshoe bay, the administrative heart of the archipelago.
The valleys carry the stories. Taipivai held the warriors who hosted and unnerved young Herman Melville in 1842 — his book Typee made the island famous. Hakaui hides the Vaipo waterfall, plunging about 350 m down a slot canyon. Around Hatiheu, restored ceremonial platforms — tohua, me'ae, tiki — sit under banyans exactly where the nineteenth century left them.

Paepae house platforms in the shade, horses on the beach at Anaho, chants revived at festival grounds — the Marquesas hold their past close.
04 / A sensible first visit
Days that
use the island well.
- 01Plan the transfer honestly
Airport to Taiohae is a scenic 90-minute mountain drive — arrange it ahead, and enjoy it.
- 02Hire local, everywhere
Drivers and guides are how you reach Hakaui, Taipivai, and the north-coast bays — and how the sites make sense.
- 03Give Hatiheu a full day
The bay, the archaeological complexes under the banyans, lunch at the famous village restaurant, then Anaho on foot if legs allow.
- 04Slow to Marquesan time
One site a day, done well. The island resists checklists and rewards patience.
