An island
lifted twice.
Rurutu is geology you can walk through: an old volcano lifted by a passing hotspot, so its fringing reefs rose out of the sea as cliffs of fossil coral — makatea — now honeycombed with caves like the stalactite chamber of Ana A'eo. About 2,160 people live in three tidy villages, of which Moerai is the largest.
From July to October, humpback whales arrive from Antarctic waters to calve and rest in the island's lee, often so close that spouts are visible from the coast road. Rurutu is equally proud of its land culture: taro terraces fill the valley floors, and the island's woven hats and mats are prized across French Polynesia.
